A n era-defining artist known mainly for his delight-ful costume albums and brilliant religious paint-

ings, Damián Domingo was also the first Filipino mas-ter of the portrait, as well as a pioneer art teacher and director of the first P hilippine art academy. Signifi-cant new data uncovered over the past two decades—including the artist ’s rediscovered self-portrait and his last will and testament—paint a clearer picture of Do-mingo’s life and times, and allow new insight into the artist ’s mind as imaged in his works. Exhaustive back-ground research and illustrations of historical Manila recreate his world, the Philippines of the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, an era often glossed over by historians. Domingo’s sur viving church-inspired masterpieces, portrait miniatures, and meticulous cos-tume illustrations are reproduced here in lush detail. Also included are artworks by the artist ’s family and by his descendants, the Ongpín family, along with oth-er rare images from the Ongpín collection. The first full-length documentary biography of a Filipino mas-ter before Luna or Hidalgo, this book provides a fasci-nating new window into the history of Philippine art.
