Reading Reports I know your child has been reading a lot at home! This is an expectation for every child in 3rd
grade. Thanks for looking over their monthly “Reading Report”. September reports will be due
on Monday, October 1st. This is coming up quickly! 😊
Remember, completion of this is part of the reading grade! Students will also get to have their favorite book of the month displayed in our classroom and will be participating in “book talks”
over their book of the month! Don’t forget that the kids need to have a summary written about their favorite book of the month. The expectations for that summary are on the reading record
sheet and the rubric that can be found on the 3rd grade website (below). http://teachers.olatheschools.com/br3rdgrade/dive-into-reading-monthly-calendars/
Kindergarten Book Buddies
and Counselor
This year, 3rd graders have the opportunity to be the “big buddies” with kindergarteners for the first
time! They will work on various projects together and read many
stories.
The kids alternate weeks that they meet with buddies and with
our wonderful counselor, Mrs. Scott. She works closely with the kids on building social and emotional
skills as well as problem solving strategies.
Panther Packs
This is a time once a month when students meet with their school “family” consisting of one adult leader in the building and other students in grades K-5. These families remain the same from year to year and meet to do team building activities and discuss ways to implement the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We have already had one meeting with our pack (last week) and look forward to meeting with our “families” again in October!
Leader in Me and Second Step -This week using the Leader in Me program, students learned about the physical environment of the classroom and what they can do to keep the school and classroom clean and organized. -Using the Second Step program, students learned how making a good plan can help you be a better learner.
Next week... Reading: We will be reading another
informational passage, Surviving Mount Everest. We will review non-fiction text features while also focusing on identifying details in the text to support our answers, opinions, and inferences about the text.
Writing: Students are connecting parts
of speech and good sentences to make “juicy” paragraphs. We will continue this focus over the next couple of weeks while students build their “Hamburger Paragraphs.”
Math: We just started our unit over
finding the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Students will use their knowledge and strategies from the addition unit to help with this. Afterwards, we will start our unit over subtraction.
Social Studies: Students will learn
about the different landforms and create their own continent. We will fill out a study guide over the continents, oceans, and where we live. They will take a quiz over this next week.
Students will need to know their home address for the quiz next week!!
Spelling: Students will be working with
short and long vowels next week (list 6). They took the pretest today and will take the posttest on Thursday, Sept. 27th.
