I wish to congratulate the graduands for their hard work and determination. Your graduation is indeed a remarkable achievement for us and the country at large.

The University is grateful to the government for the continuous support which has enabled the University to expand both the infrastructure and human resource to cater for the needs of students. The completion of Lecture Theater Block 2 has enhanced teaching and learning. We are in the meantime developing other infrastructural projects that will go a long way to improveonservicedeliverytostudentsandstaff.I wish to encourage the students to make use of the available facilities and make the best out of their time in the University.

TherecentISO9001:2008re-certificationrestatestheUniversity’s commitment to the provision of quality service to its customers. I wish to congratulate the Universityforsustainingthecertification.Inaddition, the University has continued to perform very well in Performance Contracting and I wish to commend the staff and other stakeholders for their contribution. As Council, we commit to making available resources necessary for University to achieve its mandate.

We note that the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan comes to an end this year. In this regard, the Council is in the process of developing the 2016-2020 Strategic Plan which is envisioned to reposition the University as a CentreofScientificInnovationandExcellence.

As a growing University, the current budgetary allocation is inadequate. I wish to appeal to the government to increase the level of exchequer grants in order to enable the University to meet its recurrent and development needs. As Council, we have put in place governance structures, policies and systems to ensure prudent utilization of funds and other resources.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF COUNCIL

12 UNIVERSITY OF KABIANGA

It is gratifying to note that University of Kabianga is holding its 3rd Graduation Ceremony. I wish to congratulate this year’s graduands for their determination and hard work which has made

them to realize their dreams.

I appreciate that in this 3rd Graduation Ceremony, the University is graduating a significant numberof graduands, in various disciplines, compared to previous years. I acknowledge that the University is releasing highly skilled manpower to the job market. As a ministry we are committed to working with stakeholders in supporting the provision of quality higher education.

TheMinistryisawareandappreciatestheefforttheUniversity has made and indeed is making to meet and surpass its Performance Contracting targets as well as the commitment to meeting the strategic targets set out in its Strategic Plan (2010-2015). Furthermore, I am happy to note that the Strategic Plan objectives resonate well with the objectives of the National Strategy for University Education (2007-2015) in which Universities are to improve the quality of teaching and research for socio-economic transformation of Kenya and develop strong linkages and partnerships to enhance mutual learning, research and innovation.

Since the government’s vision is to transform the country into a technology based knowledge economy which is also articulated in the University’s Vision, it is my appeal to the University to continue developing and mounting market driven academic programmes without compromising quality. This would ensure that we produce human capital that would enable the country to achieve the Kenya Vision 2030 and the global Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030).

The Ministry is aware of the challenges Universities are facing due to the ever escalating demands for University education and inadequate exchequer funding due to competing demands in the various sectors of government. Despite the limited resources, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the University Council and Management

for the prudent utilization and management of resources.

18 UNIVERSITY OF KABIANGA

It is imperative that Universities, being centers of excellence, bear the responsibility of providing research or knowledge-based solutions for the socio-economic development and overall

improvement of the livelihoods of communities in the country and beyond. This is in line with the three core mandates of institutions of higher learning that include academics, research and extension.

The Directorate of Research, Linkages and Extension (RL&E) in the Division of Planning, Research and Development (PR&D) was established at the beginning of 2015. It is mandated to provide strategic guidance for the improvement of the research culture at UoK, with the vision that the knowledge thus generated, will ultimately be beneficialtosociety.

Further, this Directorate has proactively implemented its mandate since inception. A research workshop held recently identified thestrategies to be implemented to revitalize the research culture at UoK. Consequently, monthly research seminars on a wide range of aspects of research including current cutting-edge advances were initiated. Improvement on research outputs is quite evident.

The achievement of the foregoing also involves establishment of collaborative partnerships with public and private institutions that provide synergy in theefficient carryingoutof research inmutualfields of interest. These generate useful newknowledge, processes and products. It is in this regard that the Directorate endeavors to continue consulting with relevant institutions to increase the number of UoK collaborating partners from the current eight (8).

To attain the ultimate goal in the fulfillment ofits mandate, the Directorate (RL&E) will ensure packaging and appropriate transfer of research findingstoindustryandend-users,forthesetobebeneficialtosociety.

Council

It is yet another precious moment that we are celebrating a long journey that our brothers and sisters struggled to accomplish. It is an accomplishment when comrades succeed after their academic

life. Remember that the moment of enlightenment is when a person’s dreams of possibilities become images of probabilities. Nothing in this world brings ecstasy into a dreamer’s life than to see the most cherished image into his or her mind and heart transformed into something tangible.

This timeless truth is as simple as this: you are powerful beyond measure; more powerful than you ever imagined yourself and more often than not the people around have not had any glimpse into the majestic future that lies ahead of you.

I would like to remind you that this graduation is not the end. Proceed to obtain your masters and move ahead with life, since learning is a process with no end.

May God bless you in your endeavours.

According to the lead scientists, the firstphase of producing the aforementioned products is complete, awaiting the next phase where small scale production will be done to produce enough detergent products for use within the University.

“This will go a long way to cut on costs since there will be economies of scale as a result of producing the detergents locally,” adds the Head of Department, Dr. Joyce Kiplimo.

“The idea is to encourage the youth to venture into such innovations so as to inculcate entrepreneurial skills early on in life as an alternative means of employment. The Department has shown this by example,” emphasizes Dr. Maurice Oduor, the Dean of the School.

University of Kabianga students have excelled in both national and regional innovation competition in academic and sporting activities showing a sense of

excellence.

Last year, The Inter-religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) invited University to submit articles on the Social Transformations Innovation Competition. Of the numerous entries made, only ten participants were invited to attend the Gala at the Laico Regency Hotel. The University was represented by two students who emerged second and sixth overall in the competition.

The competition brought together several University students who gathered in Nairobi’s Hotel Central Park on 20th May, 2015 to give their ideas on “The Kenya we Want.” The best three students were later on mentored and assisted in implementing the ideas they came up with in their respective Universities.

With the audacity and resilience of the University of Kabianga students and the desire to shine and outshine the so called “Big-Named Universities,” the

32 UNIVERSITY OF KABIANGA

Between the 24th and 26th July 2015, Kenya came to a standstill and all the lenses of cameras

around the world zoomed in and converged in Nairobi. Not that the country was hosting the World Cup or the IAAF Olympic Championships, but because it was hosting the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), the first of its kind in theSub-Saharan Africa.

The most important thing to Kenyans, however, during the time was not so much about the GES but the son of the nation and the most powerful man in the world, the US President Barack Hussein Obama, who was gracing the occasion.

The University of Kabianga had 30 student-representatives who were among the audience invited at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.

The anticipation was great; some merely interested in catching a glimpse of “The Beast” as Obama’s motorcade passed by. Some dreams were, however, shattered as they never saw the motorcade when Obama left for Kenyatta University where he was hosting a discussion with groups of activists.

By telling his history of the past, he drove an agenda and challenged all the people of Kenya to learn their history and know how far they have come and how long are they are yet to go.

Ismail Mohamud Adan, a 4th year student of University of Kabianga present at the Arena and who was interviewed by the BBC Correspondent Omar Ragge, said it was a privilege to be in Kasarani listening to the speech that called on the Government to treat its citizens with dignity.

“I was impressed by his call to government to treat Muslims like other citizens in the country without discrimination,” said Ismail who hails from North Eastern.

The Dean of Students, Dr. Mary Wosyanju, expressed her sincere gratitude for the invitation from the American Embassy and thanked the students for conducting themselves in a civilized manner.

“The team maintained high standards of discipline and stuck together until the end even after many roads and highways in Nairobi were closed,” she said appreciatively.

Joash Okeyo, a 3rd year student, got a one chance in a million to shake hands with the most powerful man on earth at the Arena.

THE GRADUANDS’ SAYin Kericho County. As UoK continues to grow its impact on its students is immeasurable and it’s releasing relentless agents of change to the world. Surely, am wiser, more skillful and knowledgeable as I graduate, the journey has not ended but has just begun. Blessed UoK.

Dan Orone, BA Economics

Joining Campus was a dream come true in my life. The moment I received my admission letter to UoK and now completing my degree is a ground breaking moment that I can vividly say UoK offers the best learningenvironment in Kenya. From competent lecturers, vibrant and peaceful students’ organizations to Management, I can simply say we are set to join and explore the world.

God bless everyone for our contribution in our lives.

Valentine Adem, Bachelor of Education (Science)

After successfully completing my degree, I would like to describe UoK as the best University as far as holistic life is concerned. The lecturers are knowledgeable and proficient. To them, teaching ismore of relationship than just work. I thank everybody who contributed in building us into professionals.

God bless UoK.

Anne Syalo, Human Resource Management

Being at University of Kabianga was indeed a great opportunity for nurturing me to become a holistic person. I attribute all my success, leadership and academic excellence to God, parents, friends and Kabianga fraternity at large. Winston Churchill’s great words kept me going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

God bless UoK.

Omosa Joash, BSc in Human Resource Management

My life in campus was normal, a kind each comrade leads. Nevertheless, one exceptional thing I did was to spend more time in the library, where many comrades err. It is worthwhile to note that UoK being a developing University faces myriad challenges and as comrades we have recognized a delusion’s delusion and still refuse to give up. The result of this is excellence.

Rahab Wairimu, BA Public Administration

After 4 years of successful study in UoK, we the graduands have skills and knowledge to make positive contributions to the society. I posses more than the cutting edge skills to positively impact the future economic vitality of Kenya. I have been mentored by the best in the perfect serene environment
