ABSTRACT:Weconsiderdifferentviewsoftherelationshipbetweenthingswhichexistandthingswhichhappen.Dotheseformdistinctcategories(e.g.,“continuants”vs“occurrents”)?Ifso,whatsortsofrelationships(e.g.,one-wayormutualdependence)holdbetweenthem?Ifnot,whatkindofontologyisimpliedbythis(e.g.,someformof“four-dimensionalism”)?Amongstthingswhichhappenweconsidersubcategoriessuchasprocessesvsevents,andagainaskiftheseformdistinctcategories,andifsohowtheyarerelated.Inparticular,dotheyrepresentdistinctobjectivepropertiesinreality,ordotheyratherreflectdifferentwaysofconceptualisingreality?Theseissuesareexploredagainstthebackgroundofsomeexistingontologies(e.g.,BFO,DOLCE)andalsousedasthestimulusfordevelopingsomemoreorlessradicalalternatives.Ifthereistime,wewillthengoontolookattheimplicationsoftheseideasfortheanalysisofcausalityandcausalrelations.

ABSTRACT:Ontologiesofthegeographicworldareimportanttoallowthesharingofgeographicdataamongdifferentcommunitiesofusers.Ageo-ontologyprovidesadescriptionofgeographicalentities,whichcanbeconceptualisedintwodifferentviewsoftheworld.Thefieldviewconsidersspatialdatatobeasetofcontinuousdistributions.Theobjectviewconceivestheworldasoccupiedbydiscrete,identifiableentities.Objectsandfieldsarenotmerelylocatedinspace,theyaretiedintrinsicallytospace.However,toproperlyrepresentchanges,itisalsonecessarytodescribeconceptsthatconveythedynamicsofspatialphenomena.Thenotionsofeventsandprocessesareusefultoexplicitlyincludethetemporaldimension.ThelecturespresentageneraloverviewofthemaintrendsinGeospatialOntology,discussingtheconceptsofobjects,fieldsandeventsforrepresentationofgeographicalphenomena.Thecoursealsohighlightsthespecificareaoflanduseandlandcoverontology,anareaofconsiderableimportanceforgeospatialontologyresearch.

ABSTRACT:Nowadays,nearlyeveryaspectofourlivesdependsonorganizations,sincethedaywearebornuntilthedaywedie.Itcomesthuswithnosurprisethecontinuousquestfortools,methodsandtechniquesthatenabletodealwithandmanagethem.Ontologicalmodelingisoneamongthesemethodologies.Butorganizationsaresuchcomplexandelusiveobjectsthatthepossibilityofprovidingmeaningfulmodelsofthemrequiresadeepandthoroughanalysis.Thislectureismeanttoprovideawideoverviewonsomeofthemainnotionsthatneedtobeanalyzedpriortomodelingorganizations.Theserangefromthefoundations(e.g.collectiveintentionality,speechacts…),totheconstituents(e.g.roles,groups…),tothetheoreticalperspectiveswhichpresuppose–orshouldpresuppose–anunderstandingofthem(e.g.socio-technicalsystems,cyber-physicalsystems…).

ABSTRACT:Thereisadiversityofontologylanguagesinuse,amongthemOWL,RDF,OBO,CommonLogic,andF-logic.RelatedlanguagessuchasUMLclassdiagrams,entity-relationshipdiagramsandobjectrolemodellingprovidebridgesfromontologymodellingtoapplications,e.g.insoftwareengineeringanddatabases.Anotherdiversityappearsatthelevelofontologymodularityandrelationsamongontologies.Thereisontologymatchingandalignment,moduleextraction,interpolation,ontologieslinkedbybridges,interpretationandrefinement.TheDistributedOntology,ModelandSpecificationLanguage(DOL)isanObjectManagementGroupstandard,whichaimsatprovidingaunifiedmetalanguageforhandlingthisdiversity.Inparticular,DOLprovidesconstructsfor(1)“as-is”useofontologies,modelsandspecifications(OMSforshort)formulatedinaspecificontology,modellingorspecificationlanguage,(2)OMSformalisedinheterogeneouslogics,(3)modularOMS,(4)mappingsbetweenOMS,and(5)networksofOMS.ThepresentationwillcoverthebasicsofDOLandprovideexamplesforitsapplication.CV:AfterFabianNeuhausreceivedhisPh.D.atHumboldtUniversityin2002,heworkedontopicsinformalontologyandappliedontologyinthelifesciencesfirstattheInstituteforFormalOntologyandMedicalInformationScienceatSaarlandUniversityandaspartoftheNationalCenterforBiomedicalOntologyatSUNYBuffalo.Between2006and2013FabianNeuhauswasaguestresearcherattheNationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnology.In2013FabianNeuhausacceptedapositionattheInstituteofKnowledgeandLanguageEngineeringattheUniversityofMagdeburg,whereheservesastheprincipalinvestigatorfortheEUproject"ConceptInventionTheory".Since2013FabianNeuhaushasbeenmemberoftheExecutiveCounciloftheInternationalAssociationforOntologyanditsApplications(IAOA).Further,heisoneoftheprinciplecontributorstoboththerevisionofISOCommonLogicandtheObjectManagementGroup(OMG)DistributedOntology,Model,andSpecificationLanguage(DOL).Currently,hismainresearchinterestsareontologylanguagesandontologyevaluation.
