n  Minimum of 4 years in obstetrics and gynecology full-time

n  Include at least 2 years (full-time or equivalent) in the specialty within the four years preceding a candidate’s initial application.

n  All posts overseas, if hospital-based in obstetrics and gynecology, are now generally accepted.

n  Training carried out before successful attainment of the Part 1 MRCOG can be counted towards the requirement

n  A minimum of 6 consecutive months in any single post is required.

n  Training must be completed by the preceding 7 February for the March/May examination, or by the preceding 7 August for the September/November examination.

+The Format of the Part 2 Examination

n The examination comprises written + oral components (OSCE)

n Multiple-choice (MCQ) question paper

n Extended matching (EMQ) question paper

n written short answer question papers.

+OSCE

n  Only those candidates who achieve a pass in the written examination will proceed in May (following the papers in March) and November (following the papers in September).

n  Three-hour oral assessment.

n  Twelve 14-minute stations

n  The oral assessment is marked out of 200

n  Two of these stations will be rest or preparatory

n  If you fail ….start from ZERO!

+SHORT ANSWER QUESTION (SAQ) PAPER

n 4 short answer questions numbered 1 - 4; all questions to be answered / 26 minutes to answer each question / only two sides of A4 paper

n  Each short answer question (SAQ) is marked out of 20.

n  Each question and answer space is now clearly sub-divided.

n  Only answers in the correct space for each sub-question will gain marks.

n  For each SAQ a maximum of 4 marks may be deducted for persistent factual errors or dangerous clinical practice.

+SHORT ANSWER QUESTION (SAQ) PAPER

n  Read the question carefully and decide which are the key word.

n  “Critically appraise the management of delay in the second stage of labour” refers to management and your appraisal of that management. It does not ask for the aetiology of the condition.

n  If you do not answer a question, your score is zero

n  Answer the question concisely.

+Fail in SAQ

n  Two reasons.

1)  They have not read (or understood) the question,

2)  They lack the clinical experience necessary to give a valued answer.

+EMQ & MCQ

n  Each paper 2 hours 15 minutes

n  1 hour 25 minutes on the EMQ Paper / remaining for MCQ

+Marking system

n  A different pass mark is used for each examination.

n  Depending on the difficulty of that examination.

n  Candidates who fail the written component will be informed of their performance relative to these minimum standards.

n  No relationship whatsoever to the percentage of candidates who will succeed in the Part 2 written examination.

+Marking system

n  There is no separate pass mark for the EMQ, MCQ and the short answer papers.

n  Combined pass mark for the written component
