A Message from Mr. Larson:The students and staff have completed another great year at Russia School. Our students had exciting accomplishments over the year, many of which were celebrated this spring. Numerous junior high and high school students were recognized at the Awards Program Night. Russia was also represented well at the JVS Achievers Banquet. Congratulations goes to our spring sports athletes on successful seasons. We had student athletes recognized for Shelby County League Honors and many of our track athletes are continuing to compete during the post season. We conducted our traditional Spring Art Show event, which included the Third Grade Wax Museum, the Spring Music Concert, and the display of Visual Arts in the commons. Our juniors and seniors enjoyed a great evening at the Prom and After-Prom. The exciting spring culminated with the graduation of the Class of 2009. Our seniors helped make this ceremony very special and memorable.

Congratulations students, staff, and families on another terrific school year. I personally would like to thank Superintendent Michael Moore, the staff at Russia School, the Russia Board of Education, parents, the greater Russia School community, and especially the students for a wonderful two years as building principal. I have been blessed to work in such a special school district and wish Russia School the very best.

Power of the Pen

Congratulations to 8th grader Becca Meyer and 7th graders Emilie Frazier, Jackie Siefring, Rachel Pinchot, and Morgan Daugherty for competing at the Regional Power of the Pen Tournament on Saturday, March 28th at Minster Middle School. This competition concluded the season for the Power of the Pen team this year. Also, thanks to all of the 6th-8th graders who attended the dance on Friday, May 8th to help support the Power of the Pen Writing Club.

D.A.R.E. Graduation

Congratulations to all of the fifth grade students who completed the requirements to graduate from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. The ceremonies were held at Fairlawn School. Each fifth grade student received a Certificate of Achievement and a DARE t-shirt for their accomplishments. Special Recognition to D.A.R.E. Essay Winners Rachel Heuing & Cassie Pleiman!

Regional Mathcounts

The Russia Junior High School Mathcounts team competed in the 2009 Regional competition on February 21st at Apollo Career Center in Lima.  The team of Trevor Sherman, Treg Francis, Shana Meyer, Jacob Pleiman, Gina Barlage, Ethan Hoying, Brad McMaken, Camille Puthoff, and placed 2nd of 14 teams and advanced to the state competition in Columbus.  Individual finishers for the regional competition were as follows: Trevor Sherman – 4th place, Shana Meyer – 8th place, Treg Francis – 12th place, Gina Barlage – 22nd place, Camille Puthoff – 24th place, Jacob Pleiman – 27th place, Brad McMaken – 33rd place, and Ethan Hoying – 37th place.

State Mathcounts

The State Mathcounts Competition was held on March 14, 2009 at Columbus State Community College.  The Russia Junior High School team placed 27th in the state.  Individual finishers were as follows:  Shana Meyer – 98th place, Jacob Pleiman – 114th place, Trevor Sherman – 140th place, and Treg Francis – 168th place.  Congratulations to all of these students!!!!

American Legion Buckeye Boys State

Representing Russia and being sponsored by the Ft. Loramie Post of the American Legion to the 2009 Buckeye Boys State will be Zach Borchers. Alex York was selected as the alternate in the event that one of the boys being sponsored will be unable to participate. Zach will be attending a week-long program on the workings of local and state government in June at Bowling Green State University. Ranked as the top program in the nation, Boys State teaches rising seniors about the inner workings of government from an experiential vantage point as the young men take part in role playing a miniature state government from campaigning and running for office to conducting the business of the General Assembly, school boards, town councils, and the state police. Congratulations to Zach Borchers and THANK YOU to the Ft. Loramie American Legion for making this opportunity possible for our students.

PICTURE FOR YEARBOOK AND HALLWAY COMPOSITE

Incoming seniors should make an appointment this summer for their professional senior picture. One traditional picture is due to the yearbook advisor by December 1st. This picture will be used for the yearbook and the hallway composite. A traditional picture must not have any items included in the picture (name, trees, graduating year, hats, etc.) and no “hands” in the picture. Any questions or concerns contact the office. If you are not going to a professional photographer, plan on getting your picture taken at Russia School on student picture day, September 1 by Lange Photographics.

Student Work PermitsStudents needing a summer work permit should stop in the school office to pick up

the necessary application forms.

Testing Results

Parents of students in grade levels 3-8 are asked to stop at Russia Local School to pick up the results from their child’s Ohio Achievement Tests. We will administer a One Call Now when the results are available. The Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) results for sophomores were mailed out with report cards.

Also: Report cards for grade levels K-12 were mailed Fri., May 29th. Please contact the school office if you did not receive your child’s report card. Thank you.

~ After-Prom a Huge Success ~

The After-Prom Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the donors from the community for their generosity towards this year’s event. Each year the students look forward to the get together and once again, it was a huge success. Also, thank you to all the parents of the students in the sophomore class who helped out. This was a successful night because of everyone’s willingness to give their time or a donation.

Recycle empty inkjet, laser, fax and copier cartridges from home and work and help raise funds for our school through the Cartridges for School program. We receive up to $3 for empty inkjet cartridges and up to $8 for empty laser, fax, and copier cartridges!

---- Federal Special Education Funding ----All Shelby County Schools receive Federal Special Education Part B funds to assist with the education of handicapped students. By law, this money can only be used for handicapped students ages 3-21 who are on an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The amount of funding is determined by the number of students on an IEP in each school district and also based on each student’s disability. The funding procedure is IDEA and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) money. Citizens who have questions on the expenditures of these funds may contact Jeanie Bruns, Director of Special Education for Shelby County Schools at 937-498-1354.

RCA Year in Review…The RCA distributed approximately $3,000.00 to the teaching staff and students this year. We purchased numerous teacher resources and equipment for the classrooms through our teacher request forms. We also paid for prizes and snacks for various academic groups.

The annual skating party was held at Piqua Skate Club in November. Once again it was well attended and a great success.

At Christmas we held a poinsettia sale, which is our biggest fundraiser. We’d like to thank you for your support! Small prizes were given to the children who sold the most flowers to show our appreciation for going the extra mile to help make our fundraiser a success!

We also held another Spring Dance in March for the Jr. High Students. In April, we brought the COSI on Wheels “What’s Wild” program to school for a fun assembly, followed by hands on activities for grades K-6. This program taught our students about

Ohio Wildlife in a fun, interactive way. Thank you to the numerous parent volunteers who spent their day assisting the students with the various activities. We couldn’t have done it without your help!

During “Staff Appreciation Week” we thanked all the teachers and staff by providing a boxed lunch and desserts for all of their hard work and dedication.

Over the summer months, we are hoping to add another 4-square court to the playground. We are also hoping to build a recess storage unit to aid in storing playground equipment securely while providing easy access for the playground attendants and students.

We would like to give a special thank you to the community for your support of the RCA! Your help enables us to sponsor events for our students, as well as provide us with funds to hear and honor requests from the teachers for items they need to help strengthen our student’s education. Also, thank you to all the RCA officers for all your time, support, and ideas!

MUSIC NOTES…….Ask your child for their summer newsletter, especially the students who are entering the 6 th Grade Band and Junior High Band. Students do not need to bring in their band book money until their August rehearsal or the first week of school. Also, the summer is a good time to give that instrument a cleaning and get those needed repairs done. Please try to have repairs done BEFORE you come back to school. Most companies take a week to do repairs. This has been a super growing year for the band. The high school band will have 74 concert band and 77 marching members in the band! Have a safe and musical summer.

--- Ideas for Summertime Learning ---Many children are thinking about playgrounds, camps, late nights, and lazy days. How can you add fun learning opportunities to their list? Try scheduling a “family learning night” every other week or so. Check out these suggestions to get you started.

Family Book Club…Organize a book club--it’s a great way to encourage your youngsters to read. First, ask everyone to read the same book. Then, choose a night to talk about it. Have a list of questions ready to spark the discussion. Examples: “Can you think of a different ending for the story?” “Would this make a good movie?”

Math Hour…Spend an evening practicing math skills with games. Great ones include Yahtzee, Dominoes, S’math, or Mancala. Try math activities from books like Family Math or Math Thinking Motivators. Or, challenge each other with math puzzles.

Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt…The whole family can learn new words with this game. Ask your youngster to find an unusual word in the dictionary. Then, have her write it and its definition on an index card. On the front of the card, she can draw a picture based on the word. Have everyone try to guess the word by looking at the picture. Who can spell the word correctly? Can anyone use it in a sentence?

Russia Local School 2009 Spring Sports SummaryWe recently completed a very successful spring sports season here at Russia with the exception of the 9 individuals who will be competing in the state Track & Field meet next weekend. The boys track and field team finished runners-up in both the Shelby County League meet and the District meet.  The boys 4x800 meter relay team was crowned regional champions by running the 3200 meter relay in a time of 8:04.72.  Alex Lachat placed third in the pole vault at the regional meet as well. The girl’s track and field team also had a very successful season.  The girls 4 x 800 meter relay team place fourth in the regional meet and Katie Borchers placed 4th in the 800 meter run.In addition, the junior high girls track and field team was crowned Shelby County League Champions for the second consecutive season. The varsity baseball team finished with a record of 16-11.  The junior varsity baseball team finished with a record of 13-10.  The varsity softball team finished with a record of 9-15.  The junior varsity softball team finished with a record of 4-7.

Reminder of Physicals for AthletesThe first day of practice for golfers is Monday, August 3rd and the first day of practice for cross country and volleyball is Monday, August 10th. All students planning on participating in a fall sport must have their physical by these dates. On Wednesday, July 1st, Dr. Scott Swabb and his staff will be performing physicals for student-athletes at Russia Local School. The cost is $15 and can be paid at the time of the physical by cash or check made out to Dr. Scott Swabb. The physicals will be conducted from 2:00-4:15 pm. Registration is in the Commons area. Physical forms were sent home with all students and are also available on line at www.russia.k12.oh.us. There is a link located on the home page (under forms) for you to access and print this form. If you can not access the school’s website, you can obtain a copy from the school office. Interested students must reserve a time by calling Mr. Francis at 526-3939 beginning Monday, June 15th. Students participating in this must come with the parent portion of the physical form completed in advance. Thank you to Dr. Swabb and his staff for their willingness to help provide this service.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association established an annual state Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award for an adult in our school or community. This award along with a plaque from Russia Local School went to Mike Schafer this year. Mike has had many years of dedicated service to Russia High School Athletics as an Athletic Booster Member, School Board Member, Band Booster Officer, and a faithful fan. Congratulations Mike!!!!!!
