A: Definitely communication. We learned to talk on the field in order to support each other and make smart plays.

SAMUEL OGLE MIDDLE SCHOOL

This has been a great year so far for the Rams. The softball team brought home another County Championship for the second year in a row. This was also their second consecutive undefeated season. Our basketball teams also had great seasons. The girl’s team made it to the playoffs. I interviewed Ms. Vane, the assistant coach of the girl’s softball team, to see

what she had to say about the amazing softball season.

Q: What was the hardest team you guys played?

A: James Madison which was the team we had to play for the county championship.

Q: Who hit the most homeruns? A: Probably Taylor Ivey, but we had a lot of great hitters this year like Savannah Welch, Katelyn McDermott and Brooklynne Smith.

ICE! Is a tourist attraction in National Harbor owned by Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. It is a large building filled with ice sculptures, featuring “Christmas Around the World” (2016 only). Inside it is 9 degrees. Fahrenheit! Tickets are 21 dollars for children and 29 dollars for adults.

The team who carved ICE! Traveled all the way from China just to carve it. There are ice slides, sculptures, live carvers, and at the very end, a life size nativity that takes your breath away. The exhibit was up from November 17 to January 1, so definitely plan to go next year!

1.Door Decoration: Cut out cool shapes and glue or tape them on the door to make a nice welcoming door.

3. Wish and Dream Jar: Decorate a jar with stickers ropes or just have it plain. Then fill it with dreams or wishes that you have for when you grow up. You can also just fill it with inspirational things for when you are down. 4. D.I.Y. String Wall Art: This is a way to jazz up your room with fun and bright colors. It is really easy to make and can be done in less than 2 hours. First tie a lot of strings (about 50) to a craft stick. Then take fun colored die and arrange it in a way that you’re your personality. 5.Water Bottle Bank: Make customized banks with just a water bottle, colored paper, clay and some other simple supplies. Take a small water bottle, punch a hole in it at the top, then add fun faces to customize it. You can also add marbles at bottom.

Study Tips Have you ever tried to study for a test, but just couldn’t memorize what you needed to

know? That has definitely happened to me. To study for a test, you have to know the basics and the very important details of what you’re learning. It is hard to study for tests sometimes, though, since you don’t know what the questions are going to be. Luckily, there are some tips and tricks to help you study for your test, and you just might ace it!

If you know about a test ahead of time, you shouldn’t just do one big study session, and science proves it! You should have somewhat short study sessions, around 10 minutes, and that will help you a lot. Also, pulling all-nighters won’t help at all. This will not help your memory, so if you can, study everyday that you possibly can for a certain amount of time. Flashcards are actually a great way to memorize what you need to know for a test/quiz. With flashcards, you can focus on one part of the lesson, and if you cannot fully explain what you have learned, you do not fully understand the subject/lesson. In that case, keep studying. In my opinion, flashcards are my favorite type of study strategy. This is because they are fun, they test you on if you actually know what you need to know, and if I get a lot of questions wrong, you know what you need to work on. Flashcards are perfect for studying! My friends love to play games right before tests. This helps them remember their vocabulary words very, very well. Hopefully these tips will help you do great on your very next test!

Hidden Figures Review

Hidden Figures was a great movie. It shows how women can do anything that they set their minds to. The movie takes place in 1957, and it is about three women who are determined to work at NASA. The movie is centered around mathematician, Katherine Goble, and she has to deal with discrimination from her coworkers. I think that the movie was amazing, and it led you into Katherine’s life so that the audience could see how she balanced family life and work. The movie focused on all three women, while keeping Katherine as the main character. The movie showed what African American women had to go through and highlighted the fact that they just were not treated fairly.

Who is the Real Mr. Greenidge?

Have you ever wanted to know the real Mr. Greenidge? Well, I went and talked with him and asked him a couple of questions, and this is what he had to say. Q: So how long have you been coaching? A: I have been coaching for 5 years. Q: What other sports have you coached besides basketball? A: I have coached both baseball and soccer. Q: What do you do besides being the assistant coach? A: I handle the equipment during home games and if one of the other coaches aren’t here, then I come in.

After a couple of the coach questions, I asked some more personal questions. Q: Have you ever played a sport when you were younger? A: I played basketball 5 years for the Atlantic Community College and played against in the UNSS. I also played football for Morgan State and coached for Morgan State. Q: What is your favorite team? A: Philadelphia 76ers, but they aren’t anymore. Q: What was your inspiration? A: When I was a little kid, I loved Julius Erving aka Dr. J. He played small forward and was born February 22. Q: Do you have any final thoughts? A: There is always room for improvement.

Generations of Social Media There are so many different social media platforms that people use. Each

generation of people has brought different social media platforms which evolve in different aspects and components. All social media sites have one mission: to be able to share things you do in your life with friends and family. Some of popular platforms are Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest and Snapchat.

The oldest generation that uses social media is Generation X. The most used social media platforms used by Generation X are Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The most popular platform among this group is Facebook. Just about every adult you see or talk to has a Facebook account. Facebook is a social media platform used to connect and share experiences with your family and friends online. Facebook is popular with Generation X because it is simple and easy to manipulate. For example, using the thumbs up button if you think something is funny, interesting, or cute.

The middle child of generations who use social media is the Millennials or Generation Y. The most used social media platforms with this group are Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram. The most popular platform for them is Instagram. Instagram is a social media platform that allows users to share pictures and videos and like other peoples’ posts. Instagram has many different parts like your own feed, stories and the feeds of those you follow. On Instagram, all you need to do is double tap and swipe.

The youngest of generation who uses social media is Generation Z, which is our generation. The most popular social media platforms are Musical.ly, YouTube and Snapchat. The most popular platform for us is Snapchat. Snapchat is an app that allows you to post and send pictures and videos, but the catch is that is that it only lasts 24 hours. Snapchat is fun, and there is nothing much to it.

Social Media has changed our world for the better. It is a simple way of connecting people and communicating with family and friends. It is fun and exciting to use. Social media has changed generations, and the way they interact with people. Do you have a favorite social media app? Or do you love them all.

Elementary School to Middle School Middle school is way different than

Elementary school. By a lot. Not just what we are learning, but also how much work and big assignments we have. It’s also the way the school, the classes and the clubs work.

When you want your water bottle with you in my elementary school, you would just ask the teacher you are with. In middle school, you have to get a doctor’s note saying that you have to have a water bottle. In elementary school, you didn’t need to bring in a shot record, but in middle school, you do. The good news is you get lockers in middle school, and school starts later than elementary school. On the other hand, the lunch time in middle school seems shorter than in elementary school.

In my elementary school, you don’t get to pick what creative arts you get. In middle school you do (except for P.E. and Health). There is more of a variety of classes you can take. You can take special courses, quarterly classes, and classes that you might have taken in elementary school. In elementary school, you would have the same creative arts as the rest of your homeroom class. Also, there were no quarterly classes. In middle school, you don’t have to have the same creative arts as the rest of your homeroom class. If you have two full year classes, you would get one quarter of 8:00 am class. You might also be in honors classes.

In my elementary school, there weren’t a lot of clubs or sports. The only clubs were Drama, Robotics, and Science Bowl. The only sport was Cricket. In middle school, there are a lot of clubs and sports. Some clubs are Debate, Math, French, Drama Kids, Science Bowl, Gaming and so much more.

Overall, I think that the transition is great because, the staff is very helpful. Also, I personally think that middle school is much better than elementary school, due to the fact that middle school is more organized. -Elizabeth Tucker

Winter Concert and the Tree Lighting

Students, teachers, and Ogle-lites everywhere: the Samuel Ogle chorus department provided us with yet another astonishing Winter performance. The director and very talented artist, Mr. Southall, set up and directed the winter concert of the year of 2016-2017. The songs were based around the theme for this quarter making it possible for us to have such an amazing song selection for this year. For show, Mr. Southall had the chorus wear a white blouses and black pants or skirts. The chorus students had already prepared for the big day.

Earlier in the year, Mr. Southall was granted the opportunity to have the students sing for the mayor at the local tree lighting ceremony. This opportunity was provided by Mrs.White, the mother of a student in the chorus class named Jordan White. He performed an astonishing song in front of a large crowd in hopes that they would be uplifted with the Christmas spirit. He sang, “This Christmas: The Chris Brown Version” and amazed everyone. Although it was a cold and frosty night, the audience was warmed in their hearts, breathing in the Christmas Spirit. Soon came the day of the showcase. We weren’t required to wear our fancy clothes because we were just performing for our fellow students. We sang loud and proud and with passion and integrity. Some of the songs we did were…

A Message from our Principal

Hello Parents: Welcome back to the third quarter of the 2016-2017 School Year. It has been a very productive year, and our students have made strides in accomplishing the academic and social goals required to master their grade level expectations. We are very proud of our student attendance rate, and we thank you, parents, for ensuring that the students are well prepared as they attend school each day. I am very grateful for the teachers and staff that we have here at Samuel Ogle. They provide rigorous learning activities that help to accelerate student learning.

Our students are responsible for reading expository/information texts and writing five paragraph essays. These are all college and career readiness skills, and our students have demonstrated proficiency overall in those skills.

Our students are also expected to use mathematical skills and formulas to solve real world problems with justifications. In 6th grade mathematics, it is important for our students to use their knowledge of fractions and decimals to solve real world problems. Parents, you can help by allowing your child to use measuring tools such as measuring cups and spoons at home, and/or by allowing them to weigh the produce in the grocery store. In 7th grade, students apply their knowledge of ratio and proportions to real life applications such as banking functions and sales advertisements. It would be helpful if you explained the process of debit and credit to your child and let them see a bank statement or have a conversation with a banking employee. 8th grade students are required to use their knowledge of equations, functions, distributive property, and the slope of a line to explain data and phenomena. Help our 8th graders by sharing information about statistics in health trends such as diabetes and heart disease, etc., and ask them to use their algebra skills to create a projection of the future if the trend continues or declines.

Parents we know that our students are required to work hard in order to prepare for college and careers, so we also provide opportunities for our students to showcase their talents. Our students show their talents through “Write-a Book.” They participate in sports, clubs, activities, band, art, and chorus. We want our students to be ready and prepared to compete globally, so we need your continued support. We need classroom libraries stacked with informational novels about history, science, and mathematics. We need your help with monitoring projects and homework, and we really appreciate your support for our field trips. Other areas of need include helping to set boundaries with our students when it comes to social media and talking to students about difficult subjects. Together we can ensure that our students will be ready for the next level of work towards their academic and social goals of college and career readiness as they matriculate to high school and beyond.
