J ULY 14: If you care about increasing your property’s value and improving our water quality, you need to attend this meeting and voice your opinion. As told by the county, the bridge currently has 10ft of clearance from the water and staff is suggesting it be replaced by a bridge with 18ft of clearance—the lowest of all options being considered—while still maintaining the same roadway angles of the existing bridge. They would be making it wider to accommodate a bike path and also be putting the utility pipes underground. The higher the bridge, the bigger the boats, the bigger the houses, the more property values will rise. A wider base structure would allow better tidal flow and better water quality, and also reduce the silting-in of our canals. Personally, I would also like to see that bridge a little straighter to eliminate the “dog-leg” effect and sight restrictions that are currently present. If you truly care about your community, you need to make your voices heard. Any questions: Nancy McBibin 727-464-4812. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTThe Friends of Weedon Island is seeking volunteers from

the Riviera Bay community. They are in need of local and young residents to be active in decisions that affect the future of Weedon Island. Volunteer opportunities include helping with the information desk, learning to conduct Preserve walks through the land, and helping with Social Media just to name a few. They have an education center, boardwalks and canoe trails giving visitors a slice back to nature. They meet every other month on the first Thursday, and if there is enough interest in volunteering or becoming a board member, the Friends of Weedon Island will be delighted to work with the County to have the Riviera Bay Civic Association to meet at the preserve for a presentation and Q & A. For additional information and to learn how you can be more involved, please contact Pat Smoot at (727) 656-5657, or [email protected].

RIVIERA BAY PARK UPDATES• The mileage of the trail is being computed and will be

posted soon.• The shade structure for the exercise zone is slated to be

completed by the first week of July.• There is active discussion on installing restrooms in the

park.

Our next scheduled “Adopt A Mile”

clean-up of 83rd Avenue N/NE is Saturday August 8th. We meet at the St Pete Presbyterian Church at 600 83rd Ave NE at 8:30 AM. The RBCA will supply the gloves, pickers, buckets, trash bags and water.

On March 24th this year, the founder of Keep Pinellas Beautiful, Bill Sanders, who organized so many successful clean-up projects all over Pinellas County for 17 years, passed away. Bill was a great friend and mentor to Dave and I and helped us plan and organize all of our most successful clean-ups. In Bill’s memory, and because it’s a good thing to do, Dave and I would like the RBCA to continue working with Keep Pinellas Beautiful on the Adopt A Mile project for as long as we are active with the neighborhood.

RIVIERA BAY PARK Community Garden

Spruce-Up - Sat, Aug 22

Time once again to pull weeds and dead-head the roses in our community rose/butterfly garden at the

Riviera Bay park located at 83rd Ave NE & Macoma Dr NE. This garden is at the southeast side of the park at the end of the service road.

The RBCA will supply the gloves, clippers, trash bags, buckets, and water, all we need is volunteers to spend whatever time they can spare to help us. The number of volunteers we get determines how long we will be there.

We will be getting started around 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 22. Come out and join your neighbors and lend a hand to help keep our beautiful garden going.

I want to Thank Pete & Lynn Boyle, and Toni Michalove for helping with the last spruce up at which time we also added fertilizer to the garden.

Coyotes can be curious but are also timid and generally run away if challenged. Just remember

that any wild animal will protect itself or its young. Never initiate a close encounter with a coyote. If a coyote approaches too closely, immediately act aggressively toward the coyote. Wave your arms, throw things like stones and shout at the coyote. If necessary, make yourself appear larger by standing up or stepping onto a rock, stump or stair. Convince the coyote you are a potential danger to be avoided. Carry something that will make noise or scare the animal, such as a small

air horn, big water pistol, solid walking stick, golf club or paintball gun. These things may deter the coyote at close range. Make a “coyote shaker” by putting a few washers, pebbles or pennies into an empty soft drink can. Wrap the can in foil and tape closed. Continue “hazing” the coyote until the animal leaves; otherwise the coyote will learn to wait to leave until the activity stops.

Coyotes can be spotted either alone, in pairs or in small groups where food is readily available. They remain active year round. Coyotes do play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to keep rodent populations under control. But they can and do prey on domestic cats and small dogs. To protect your pets, don’t allow them to roam freely. Most coyote attacks on pets occur either at night or at dusk or dawn. During these times especially, be careful if you’re walking your pet in wooded areas or in heavily foliaged areas where coyotes could hide. Keep your dog close, on a short leash. Keep cats indoors. When cats wander freely, there’s an increased risk of them being attacked by coyotes. Coyotes are also attracted by garbage. Problems can be significantly reduced if residents remove attractants and secure trash.

NEVER feed coyotes! Don’t place food outdoors that will attract wild animals. Clean up pet food, fallen

fruit, and seed around bird feeders. Secure garbage cans and compost in animal-proof containers. Don’t try to pet a coyote and teach children not to approach any unfamiliar animal.

Don’t attempt to hurt it because injured animals are more likely to attack. Be aware of unusual coyote behavior. Examples of unusual coyote behavior include coyotes approaching people, stalking pets, chasing joggers or bikers or attacking leashed pets. Close off crawl spaces under porches and sheds. Coyotes and other animals use such areas for resting and raising young.

Teach children not to run from coyotes. If children are approached, have them move slowly into a house or climb up on a swing, tree or deck and yell.

Coyotes live throughout Florida and in every state but Hawaii. Coyotes eat whatever is available, including fruits, nuts, seeds, dead animals, rodents, garbage, pet food, domestic cats and small dogs. They breed every year with 2 to 12 pups per litter. Pups are raised in a den.

Removing coyotes from one area can result in other

coyotes moving in from surrounding areas and producing more pups per litter.

NEVER run away from a coyote! The coyote may not leave at first, but if you approach it closer and/or increase the intensity of your hazing, it will run away.

If the coyote runs away a short distance and then stops and looks at you, continue hazing it until it completely leaves the area. After you have successfully hazed a coyote, he or she may return again. Continue to haze the coyote as you did before; it usually takes only one or two times

to haze a coyote away for good. Coyotes are skittish by nature and as a rule do not act aggressively towards aggressive people. However, engaging animals that are sick or injured can result in unpredictable behavior. If you suspect that a coyote is sick or injured, contact the proper authorities and DO NOT interact with the coyote. To report a coyote attack or encounter, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission 1-888-404-3922, or visit www.humanesociety.org/animals/coyotes

Here are some frequently asked questions from the

community about St. Petersburg’s Universal Curbside Recycling program. Call the Curbside Recycling customer service line at 727-893-7838 with your questions.

Q. What should I do with my container after delivery?

A. Containers should be moved away from the curb and to a location out of the driveway behind or beside your home until recycling collections begins, and also between pickups once collection begins. Find your designated recycling day with the zone-specific calendar schedule included in the welcome kit provided inside each container or visit www.stpete.org/recycle. Your recycling day is also indicated by the round, brightly-colored sticker located on your recycling container.

Q. What is the City’s Universal Residential Curbside Recycling Program?

A. The Universal Residential Curbside Recycling Program is a single stream (all recyclables in one container) program for all single family and multi-unit locations with 1-4 units. Customers may place their container curbside as early as 7 p.m. the day before scheduled recycling collection, but no later than 7 a.m. on the designated recycling day. Customers should move containers away from the curb to the side or rear of their residence by 7 p.m. following recycling collection.

Q. How does it work? A. Customers may recycle glass, aluminum and steel cans,

steel jar lids, milk & juice cartons, drink boxes, plastics #1-7, newspapers, magazines, mail, shopping ads, windowed envelopes, mixed paper and cardboard in container provided. Dry cleaning and shopping bags, which are also #4 plastics, are NOT accepted with St. Petersburg’s curbside recycling program. You are encouraged, but not required, to recycle. The monthly fee for all customers is $2.95.

Q. If I refuse the container when it is delivered, will I still be charged the $2.95 per month?

A. Yes. The City encourages all residential customers to accept the container before deciding not to participate.

Q. How soon can I start recycling? A. The city will begin curbside recycling collections

on June 29 for Zone 1 with all zones receiving their first

FAQS About Universal Residential Curbside

Recycling

collection by July 10 and continuing every two weeks thereafter.

Q. What do I do if my recycling container is too full? A. Once the program gets underway on June 29, customers

are encouraged to monitor their amount of recycling. If the demand is in excess of 95 gallons with every other week

collection, an additional recycling container may be requested at no extra charge by calling 727-893-7838. Customers are encouraged to avoid requesting additional containers for seasonal projects, i.e., spring cleaning, etc. Alternatively, customers may use the city’s five recycling drop-off and brush sites in addition to other St. Petersburg locations which accept selected recyclables. A list of locations is available at www.stpete.org/brushsites and in the welcome kit

found in each recycling container. Q. Where can I find information on whether an item is

recyclable or garbage? A. An informational card provided in the welcome kit

included in each container provides a list of recyclable items accepted by the city of St. Petersburg. Customers can sign up for custom email and/or text alerts to keep track of solid waste and recycling collection days with St. Pete Collects, a residential waste platform. Customers will also be able to use mobile and desktop versions of St. Pete Collects to learn if an item is recyclable or garbage. St. Pete Collects is be available at www.stpete.org/recycle/ The mobile version will be available in early July.

Q. Who do I call for a missed recycling collection? A. Call the Customer Service line at 727-893-7838. Q. Vehicles park on my street. How can you reach my

recycling container? A. Recycling trucks will be able to safely reach between

vehicles to grasp recycling containers. On certain streets with many parked vehicles, an automated rear loader truck with two assistants will be used to wheel the container to a location where the truck can safely collect the recyclables before returning it to the original location.

Q. If I am unable to pull my garbage can to the curb, will I also be exempted from pulling the blue recycling container to the curb?

A. Yes. The Sanitation Department has a standard Tub Out Program where they will pull the container from the back of the location, dump it and return it to the back of the property. If you currently have tub-out service, your recycling container will automatically be added to the list for those already receiving the service. Applications are

Page 9: Rbca news July/August 2015 web

9RBCA

available at www.stpete.org/recycle under the Residential tab. The program requires a medical certification in order to qualify for the service.

Q. What is ‘Backyard Service’ and does it apply to the recycling container?

A. Backyard Service is a fee-based service where the solid waste container will be removed from behind the property, dumped and returned to the back of the property. The recycling container will be serviced in the same way at no additional cost to those residents who pay for solid waste backyard service.

Q. If I want to voluntarily go to solid waste service once a week, will I be able to do so at a lesser cost?

A. The City operates an existing program that allows review and approval of once-per-week solid waste services based upon these qualifying conditions. The monthly fee for once-per-week solid waste collection is $17.69. Application forms for one- and two-person households are available under the Current Rates tab at www.stpete.org/recycle.

Q. What options are available to businesses for recycling?

A. Recycling receptacles will continue to be available at each of the five city-operated Brush Site locations. A list of locations is available at www.stpete.org/brushsites. Drop-off locations around the City where recyclable materials can

be deposited will also be maintained. Private, subscription-based companies such as Waste Pro, Inc. will continue to provide service to some multi-family locations and commercial business entities.

Q. Why can’t the money generated from the sale of the recyclable materials be used to off-set the cost to residents?

A. The cost of the recycling program is being off-set by the $2.95 that residents are paying monthly for the recycling collection service since the recyclable materials don’t generate enough revenue to cover all program costs.

Q. What are the primary goals and objectives for the City’s Recycling Program?

A. The more our residents recycle, the less amount of garbage is dumped into the solid waste stream. This has enormous benefits for the environment, and leads to lower costs for sanitation service.

Q. Why should I recycle? A. Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills

and incinerators; contributes to conservation of natural resources, like timber, water and minerals; decreases pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials; increases energy savings; reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change; protects the planet for future generations; saves money and creates jobs.

While remodeling our 1/2 bath we were told by a neighbor

about the City of St. Petersburg’s Toilet Rebate Program. If you’ve got one of those old multi-gallon flush water hog toilets and are planning on replacing it with a low-flush unit, the city will help to the sweet tune of a $100. rebate. Here’s the pathway: Call the Toilet Rebate Program office at 893-7676 or e-mail them at [email protected]. After contacting the office and receiving the paperwork in the mail, you purchase any toilet that strikes your fancy as long as it’s a WaterSense low-flush approved unit, have it installed (or install it yourself), and submit the information the city requests. DON’T DISPOSE OF THE OLD COMMODE YET!!! The city will contact you, arrange an appointment, conduct a home-premises visit to check the new toilet is installed and check the old water hog’s been removed. At that point a rebate check is authorized and arrives in a couple of weeks. All in all, it’s a painless process.

Now, what do you do with the old porcelain pony? Call the city sanitation dept. and they’ll come pick it up for free. How cool is that?!
