For over thirty years, Latino medical students have been organized in regional organizations from coast to coast in pursuit of the goals of eliminating disparities in health care. ◦ CMSA- West ◦ BHO- Northeast◦ HAMSA- Southeast◦ ULAMS- Southwest◦ LMMSA- Midwest
In 1987, regional Latino medical student groups formed NNLAMS.
In May 2003, at the Garcia Leadership Conference in UTMB Galveston, the SW, SE, and the MW adopted the NNLAMS name, with NBLHO and LMSA maintaining their name.
In 2003 all five regional organizations were incorporated under one national name and filed as one unified, national nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.
In 2004, NNLAMS, established an Alumni Board of Trustees with long-term tenure, composed of physician alumni who have been involved with NNLAMS for over ten years.
