Calibrating the pressure gauge flow

C CAUTION – Hydraulic oil under pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. You must relieve pressure before disconnecting hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections before applying pressure. To avoid being sprayed by pressurized liquids, keep hands and body away from pin-holes which eject hydraulic oil under high pressure. Do not use your bare hands to check for hydraulic leaks. Use a board or cardboard instead.

Note – Do not operate the hydraulic drive without a pressure gauge.

To calibrate the pressure gauge flow:

1. Make sure the hydraulic drive is properly plumbed. For more information, refer to the ACCU-RATE Controller Installation Instructions.

2. Turn the hydraulic flow to minimum using the tractor remote that is driving the hydraulic drive.

3. With the hydraulic drives turned off, increase the hydraulic flow until the appropriate pressure (in pounds per square inch) is reached:

– Single drive = 800-1000 psi

– Dual drives plumbed in parallel = 1200-1500 psi

– Dual drives plumbed in series = 800-1000 psi

4. Test the amount of oil flow:

a. Press the MODE button once. The display should read Setup Product A.

b. If the display reads Setup Product B, press the SET button once until the indicator light for A is on.

c. Press the MODE button until the display reads Max. Speed 00.0 Off.

d. Press the SET button until the display reads Max. Speed 00.0 On. This runs the hydraulic drive at the top of the RPM range.

C WARNING – The hydraulic drive starts moving when you set the Manual or Maximum Speed to On. To avoid injury, keep clear of all moving parts. Remain in the tractor cab when the hydraulic drives are moving.

5. If the unit does not run smoothly, adjust the oil flow by increasing the pressure on the gauge (see Step 3 through Step 4 above).

Calibrating the flow control valveUse a flow control valve when a controlled flow to one of the drives is needed. For example, if you use one drive for planting and one for fertilizer you will need a flow control valve.

Note – Oil flow from the tractor must be approximately 12 gallons per minute (GPM).

To calibrate the flow control valve:

1. Turn the lever on the flow control valve to position 10.

2. Use the tractor remote that is driving the hydraulic drive to:

a. Set the hydraulic flow to minimum.

b. Set the tractor flow pressure to 1100 PSI.

3. Turn down the lever on the flow control valve until the pressure gauge reads 1000 PSI.

4. Use the tractor remote to turn up the flow until the pressure gauge reads 1100 PSI.

5. Set the pressure with both “A” and “B” drives off.

Calibrating the controllerNote – During operation, the controller must receive at least 12 volts DC at all times.

Calibrating the controller requires calculating the number of seeds that drop out of one hopper every time the hydraulic drive motor turns five revolutions. This determines the number of revolutions the motor must turn to plant the desired population.

The larger the calibration number, the slower the motor RPM.

To count the seeds that are dropped, you must run the planter in the Calibration Mode. If the calibration number entered is incorrect, the seed population is also incorrect.

To calibrate the controller:

1. For meters with finger pickup, seed plates or seed discs, note down the following information:

a. Number of teeth on the motor sprocket (usually 12).

b. Number of teeth on the first of the double reduction sprockets (usually 24).

c. Number of teeth on the second of the double reduction sprockets (usually 16).

d. Number of teeth on the driven sprocket of the drive shaft (usually 36).

e. Number of teeth on the drill shaft.

f. Number of teeth on the seed meter drive.

g. Number of cells or finger pickup.

2. Use the information you noted in step 1 to calculate the calibration number using the following formula:

3. Enter the calibration number on the controller.

After calibrating the controller, you must calibrate the ground speed.

Note – Ground speed is measured on the “A” side of the controller only. If you need to recalibrate, always make sure Cal. Feet = 400 is displayed.

2. Turn off the controller, and then turn the controller back on.

a. Press the SET button once. The display should readSPEED = 0.0 MPH.

b. Press the SET button until the display reads Counting Feet.

3. Approach your marked start point, traveling at normal speed.

4. As you pass the first start point, press the MODE button once

5. As you drive past the end point, press the SET button once.

The number displayed is the new calibration number.

6. Turn off the controller and then turn the controller back on.

7. Press the MODE button until the display reads Cal. Feet = 400.

8. Change the number 400 to the new number displayed in step 5:

a. Press the SET button to scroll between 0-9.

b. Press the MODE button to move the cursor to enter your new number.

Determining RPMNote – It is important to check the hydraulic drive motor revolutions per minute (RPM) regularly. The drive will not function properly if the RPM is too fast or too slow. For smooth hydraulic motor operation, the hydraulic drive must run 100-300 RPM for planting and 100-500 RPM for fertilizer.

Revolutions per minute (RPM) calculation formulas are provided for the following modes:

• Planting mode

• Dry Fertilizer mode

• Liquid Fertilizer mode

Determining RPM for Planting mode

1. Note down the following information:

– Highest SDS/ACRE (seeds per acre)

– Lowest SDS/ACRE

– Row width

– MPH (planting speed in miles per hour)

– Number of seeds dispensed in 5 revolutions of the hydraulic drive

2. Use the information you noted down in step 1 to calculate the RPM using the following formulas:

In this chapter:

Programming the controller

Operating the controller in the field

This chapter describes how to program and operate the ACCU-RATE controller.

You can program the ACCU-RATE controller to control variable rate drive applications for one or two hydraulic drives.

3 Operation

Accu-Rate User Guide.book Page 22 Wednesday, October 28, 2009 11:33 AM

Programming the controllerThe ACCU-RATE controller is activated by one of the following modes of operation:

• GPS mode: GIS (Global Information System) and your mapped prescriptions are used to automatically actuate the ACCU-RATE controller and hydraulic drive(s).

• Non-GPS mode: use the 32-position rate control dial to manually actuate the ACCU-RATE controller and hydraulic drive(s).

The ACCU-RATE controller can operate two programs, one for each product:

• Product A: Planting mode

• Product B: Planting, Dry Fertilizing, or Liquid Fertilizing modes (can be used with air, granular spreaders or liquid applicators with constant volume pumps)

Each program is independent, so each can operate different applications at different percentage changes. This is true for both GPS and Non-GPS operating modes. However, if the controller is run in Non-GPS Mode, both drives activate since there is only one rate control dial.

Note – If you use a single hydraulic drive, you must disable Product B. If this is not done, a Motor Stalled error message for product B appears on the controller display.

Disabling product B

1. Press the Power button to turn on the ACCU-RATE controller.

2. Press the MODE button. The display reads Setup Product B.

Note – If the display reads Setup Product A press the SET button to switch to B.

3. Press the MODE button. The display reads Planting Mode.

4. Press the SET button until the display reads Disabled.

5. Press the MODE button twice.

Note – If the display reads Save Presets NO instead, press the SET button once to change it to YES.

2. Press the MODE button to save all program calibrations to memory.

3. To resume programming, press the MODE button until you find the place where you left off.

B Tip – To reset the controller, turn off the controller and then turn it back on.
