Today was announced as a national day of mourning to remember the victims of the tragedy in Nova Scotia. As a symbol of solidarity, all

Canadians are asked to wear red today.

Monday April 27th is a Professional Development Day. Teachers are working on this day, however, they will not be delivering curriculum or answering emails related to it.

As partners in your child’s educational journey, we want to ensure, along with you the parent/guardian, that students will be ready for the next grade level. This includes academically, socially, emotionally and that they maintain good work habits and resiliency. We have

noticed that some students have not engaged in online learning. A reminder that Alberta Education has mandated school jurisdictions to deliver curriculum and instruction online. We do hope that students would maintain some sort of schedule at home to organize their day and that as parents it is your responsibility to ensure students engage in their education, even in this new online delivery. Teachers can provide the curriculum, lessons and instructions but we need parents to ensure that their children are checking in. Why is this important?

• In a normal situation of being of away from school in July/August for summer break, students do return having forgotten (regressed) some of their learning from the previous year and need to again build structure in habits. If they are not engaging online, then it may be close to 6 months or longer that they would have been away from learning.

• Good habits are a life skill

• Pushing through doing something we don’t want to do is also a life skill.

• Routines during the week – provide structure and some predictability and control for students and parents.

• We need your support at home in order to ensure that your child(ren) are doing the best they can in our current circumstances to actively participate in their online learning and routines/habits to be prepared to resume in

school learning, which will assist in an easier transition.

• Parent duty to check on your children and their progress

If you receive an email or phone call from the teacher about your child not submitting work, please let them know of the reason so that we can be of support to you. Also, regular check ins with your child and reviewing their google classroom account or D2L account with them is recommended. Thank you for your support.

We are beginning to plan for the 2020-2021 school year and require your assistance in letting us know if your child(ren) will NOT be returning to Blessed Marie-Rose School next year. If your status changes between now and June please email [email protected]. Please include where your child will be moving (school name and/or city you are relocating to).

Our originally scheduled Junior High Orientation on April 2nd was cancelled. We have created an online version for Grade 6 students who will be attending BMR as well as the new Grade 8&9 students joining us next year. The online orientation video/PowerPoint will be made available online by April 27 th. We will email all current Grade 6 families at BMR, MMG and MNA and any new families attending for Grades 8 and 9 next year when it is ready to view.

Current and new students who will be attending BMR in junior high for the 2020-2021 school year will be selecting their options beginning on Friday, May 1, 2020 @ 9 a.m. Check our website under: Students/Junior High Options for the descriptors. The link to register will not be posted until the morning of May 1st. https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/MarieRose/Students/Course-Options/Pages/default.aspx

Bake a cake with your son or daughter, ice it, then enjoy it with your family.

At this point in time there are no refunds available as the clothing order has already been completed. It is currently

stored in a warehouse in Dundas, Ontario with no clear indication as to when it will be delivered to BMR. (We missed a delivery date by 2 days before a closure of the warehouse). A representative from Team Litzen (our supplier) told us last week that the clothing may be shipped directly to your home as you have included a mailing address at checkout. If we hear any additional news from Team Litzen, we will inform parents. If the product delivery is delayed for an extended period and once received you find your child has outgrown it, please let us know and we will implement a procedure for handling these concerns. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

It is with a heavy heart, that we announce the cancelation of our 2020 BMR Spring production. At this time, our plan is to put on our production of “The Enchanted Bookshop” next year with our current cast and the addition of new cast as well. Mrs. Hamrak, Mrs. Trotta and Miss Iandolo want to commend all of our actors/performers and technical theatre students, for their commitment to the show, and for their willingness to share their talents with the community. We wish all of our Grade 9 students, all the best on their creative endeavors moving forward and encourage all of our students to remain committed to the performing arts in the future. Thank you again for all your commitment and hard work, throughout the year. We look forward to performing alongside one another again soon. God bless and stay safe.

Every Wednesday from now until the end of the school year, we will have a spirit day on Wednesdays. Participation is as always – optional. Students/Parents could send photos to their teacher/TA. The collected photos could be used for the yearbook in place of the Sports and other photos that would have occurred in March – June.

We invite all student (and their families) to join in with the fun for our pyjama spirit day. We also invite you to try some of the suggested activities

for add to the fun of the day. Send pictures to your teacher as we will be choosing some to put into our yearbook. Suggested activities:

1) Have breakfast for supper. If you have food colouring you can add it to the water when you are mixing pancakes and get creative.

2) Use scraps of fabric to make pyjamas for one of your stuffed animals. Make sure you check with your parents before you cut anything up.

3) Take a picture of you with a great book to read as a bedtime story. Even better, video tape yourself reading one and send it to a family member or friend.

4) Write a story based on one of your most interesting dreams.

5) Use your stuffed animals to play a game like leapfrog or sort them according to size, animal or colour, then arrange them to take a “class photo”.

WHY DO STARS TWINKLE?

Truth is, they don’t. Stars appear to twinkle when looking up at the night sky because of the effects of our atmosphere. Our planet’s atmosphere is a collection of

gases that surrounds our planet. It provides us with air to breathe and it protects us from the intense cold and heat of space! Due to turbulent pockets of moving hot and cold air, the path of light rays from a star in space to Earth are constantly being changed. That continuous movement makes it look like the stars are twinkling and changing in brightness.

Please see the Cone Car and Balancing Act attachments for at home experiments.

What you do:

Step 1: Use the cup bottom as a template to draw four circles on the cardboard. These are your wheels. Draw one more circle on the piece of paper, and cut it out.

Step 2: Fold the paper circle in half twice, and unfold it. Use a pencil to poke a hole at the middle point where the fold lines cross. Step 3: Cut out the wheels. Use the paper circle to mark the centers, and use a pencil to poke a hole in the center of each wheel. Step 4: Cut the jumbo straws so they are about 2cm (3/4") shorter than the regular straws. Tape a jumbo straw to each end of

the plate. Use a ruler to make sure they are parallel. Step 5: Push a wheel onto the end of a regular straw. Repeat for the second regular straw. Slide each regular straw into a jumbo

straw, and then put the other two wheels on. Flip the plate onto its wheels to make sure it rolls easily. Step 6: Make a paper cone, and tape it on top of the plate. You made a cone car! Step 7: Blow into the cone to propel your car.

Step 5: Step 6: Step 7:

•Paper plate•Pencil•Scissors•Ruler•Tape

What's going on:

You made a wind-powered car! The cardboard wheels spin around the straw axles, and the cone acts like a sail. The pointed end of the cone reduces drag by parting the air as the car moves forward. The open end of the cone catches the air that you exhale and pushes the car forward.

Now try this:

What happens if you attach the cone at an angle, or change its size? Try changing your cone car to see if you can make it go faster!

•Bottle cork•Construction paper•Markers•Scissors•Tape

Step 1: Draw and cut out an animal head from the construction paper. Tape the head to a toothpick and stick it into the top of the cork. Step 2: Stick the other four toothpicks into the cork to make arms and legs. Wrap the ends of the bottom two toothpicks with modeling clay to make feet.Step 3: Try to balance your animal on your finger. Poke your animal. Does it stay balanced?Step 4: Wrap one end of the pipe cleaner around the washer. Attach the other end to the cork to make a tail for your animal. Step 5: Try to balance your animal on your finger. Poke your animal. Does it stay balanced?

You’ve found the center of gravity! The center of gravity is the point at which an object balances. Your animal balances when its center of gravity is below its pivot or support point. The washer lowers the center of gravity and allows your animal to balance. Your animal should rock but not tip over if you poke it. Many tightrope walkers carry a sagging bar or pole to help lower the center of gravity as they balance on the narrow rope.

Would your animal balance easier if its tail was heavier? Add another washer to find out!
