National Federation of Music Clubs Junior NFMC FEDERATION FESTIVAL RATINGS – DEFINITIONS JR 3-9a

SUPERIOR (approximately comparable to academic 91% - 100%) An outstanding performance which is consistently musical, stylistically correct, and accurate. Careful attention is given to dynamics, phrasing and musical expression. Memorization is secure with rapid recovery from minor slips. Errors do not detract from the participant’s interpretation. A complete performance. EXCELLENT (approximately comparable to academic 81% - 90%) A strong performance that is musically and stylistically correct. The performance shows accomplishment and very good potential, but there are some discrepancies in rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, and/or interpretation. Hesitation and/or memory slips slightly detract from the participant’s presentation. A promising performance. SATISFACTORY (approximately comparable to academic 71% - 80%) Shows accomplishment; however, there are numerous errors in the performance. Additional work in one or more areas needed in order to achieve a convincing presentation. FAIR (approximately comparable to academic 61% - 70%) Some commendable aspects in performance and preparation are present, but severe deficiencies in fundamentals (for example, rhythm, notes, memory, etc.) are also apparent. Not fully ready for performance. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT (approximately comparable to academic 60% or less) The participant is obviously poorly prepared and appears unconcerned with the performance. Please note: Percentages are presented in this document and the “Information for Judges” document (JR 3-5) for use as a guide ONLY. Rating sheets are never to reflect any assigned percentages or numerical tabulations of any kind. Only official NFMC ratings of “Superior, Excellent, Satisfactory, Fair, Needs Improvement” will be recognized as per NFMC Standing Rules. AspectsofPerformance Developing Commendable Extraordinary

Overall Effect and Musical Expression

(Individuality, Imagination, Sensitivity, Vitality,

Convincing and Appropriate Stylistic

Interpretation)

Conviction and decisions of character are coming but lacking in their clarity, or not highly sensitive, or not very stylistically appropriate

Excellent conviction. Concepts of style are clearly present, imaginative, sensitive, and already

showing signs of advanced sophistication

An artistic and sophisticated performance!

Clear attention paid to all topics, great conviction, appropriate

character, clear intent and convincing execution.

A performance to remember!

Stage Presence/Poise and Secure Memorization

Lacking full conviction, more than two hesitations or

stumbles, inconsistent execution

Excellent conviction, sturdy memorization,

perhaps only a very slight stumble or hesitation in which the student

immediately recovered

Absolute conviction, sturdy memorization, no errors,

hesitations, stumbles, or wobbles of any kind at any point

Attention to Details in ScoreMultiple errors in

multiple categories, showing much room for improvement

Almost every single indication is followed, with only a minor error

that does not detract from the overall quality of the performance

All details are followed, student has clearly internalized the details and

what they point to in terms of sound and execution, perfect consistency

and highly sophisticated

AspectsofPerformance Developing Commendable Extraordinary

General Technique Posture and Hand Position

Flexibility

Foundational technical concepts are not yet solid; errors in one or two categories of posture, positioning,

hand position, finger movement, arm incorporation, etc.

A solid foundation and understanding of piano technique is

very clear; very good habits successfully formed

Excellent technical foundation and execution of all passagework.

Clear understanding of relationship between motion and sound utilized throughout the performance, highly

impressive and admirable

Tempo and Pulse Steadiness Flexibility Continuity

Occasional stumbles or errors in consistency of pulse; tempo not

entirely appropriate for performance

Steady sense of pulse is maintained throughout entire performance, with

perhaps only a single slight deviation. Tempo is completely

appropriate and well maintained.

Advanced understanding of pulse for the style is showcased consistently throughout the entire performance.

Tempo is absolutely appropriate and well maintained.

Rhythmic Security and Accuracy

Occasional rhythmic inaccuracies, some hesitations

Almost entirely accurate, with a very minor error of an advanced concept for that level, which does not detract

from the passage in any way

Complete accuracy of rhythm, not a single hesitation of any kind

Note Security and Accuracy Multiple note errorsAlmost entirely accurate, with only

one or two minor errors No note errors of any kind

DynamicsLacking attention to dynamic indications

Most, if not all, dynamic markings followed, but perhaps with not as much contrast as required for the

performance space

All dynamics observed with great care and understanding of how to alter technique and how dynamics

influence character

Tone Quality Projection and Color

Some attention paid to tone quality, but with sound not properly

projected for the space; harmonic shadings and colorations not

consistent

Very good tone production, student is clearly listening to and reacting to their sound; consideration and intent with choices of color clearly evident

Excellent understanding of acoustics of the room and how to alter sound

production as needed; stylistic; student clearly listening intently to

sound throughout performance

Phrasing

Attention to phrasing not demonstrated. Multiple melodic

notes in a row have the same sound. Lacking shape.

A sense of phrasing is clear throughout the performance

Artistic phrasing with advanced understanding of matching decay,

sound production, pacing

ArticulationMultiple and consistent errors

throughout performance

Almost all articulations correctly and stylistically executed with only occasional small discrepancy

All articulations clearly present and well thought out; articulation has not deterred from phrasing; stylistically

appropriate throughout

Balance and VoicingHard to distinguish between the

various voices. No clear separation of layers of melody and harmony

Clear attention paid to balance and voicing throughout

Sophisticated layering of voices demonstrating great ability to bring

out different lines as desired. All decisions make logically, and

intentionally executed

Pedal Technique

Generally blurry pedaling, or random pedaling that does not

reflect harmonic relationships or style of piece

Stylistic pedaling demonstrating careful listening; all pedal

indications observed; attention to how pedal impacts acoustical

resonance of sound

Artistic and sophisticated pedaling; demonstration of relationship

between pedal and finger legato
