    ARMY OFFICER RATES OF PAY- APRIL 2013

    * There is an annual incremental progression within each rank from Lieutenant to Brigadier.

    ARMY SCHOLARSHIP1,500 pa. (for a maximum of 2 years)The Army Scholarship offers financial assistance towards the cost of the last two years

    schooling. In addition, Army Scholars are expected to subsequently study for a first degreeand to apply for an Undergraduate Bursary, the latter subject to final approval by the ArmyUndergraduates Awards Board.

    UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY1,000 p.a. (plus 3,000 on commissioning)This annual allowance is in addition to any grants or fees from education authorities andcouncils. The Bursary holders earnings from the University Officers Training Corps areadditional to this.

    TECHNICAL BURSARIES4,000 p.a.Technical Bursaries are awarded to graduates of Welbeck, The Defence Sixth Form College,for the duration of their degree training, as part of the Defence Technical UndergraduateScheme. Earnings from membership of University Support Units, averaging 1,500 pa, areadditional to this.

    MEDICAL/DENTAL CADETSHIPS14,983 on appointment rising to 18,671 after two years, with Lieutenants (PRMP) onappointment starting at 40,728, with Captains on appointment 53,803 and Majors (GP) onappointment 96,262. The salaries of these professionally qualified officers will becommensurate with qualifications and experience.

    UNIVERSITY OFFICERS TRAINING CORPSUniversity Officers Training Corps salaries are as follows:

    Officer Cadet 38.99 per day, Officer Cadet MOD2 46.26 per day and Second Lieutenant(TA) 62.69 per day.

    A bounty of 147, rising after 1 year to 171 and after2 years to 207, is granted annuallyupon satisfactory completion of 15 days annual camp and 15 training periods of two hoursduration plus recruit and annual personal weapons tests.

    PROFESSIONALLY QUALIFIED OFFICERSProfessionally Qualified Officers, such as doctors, dentists, chaplains, nurses,physiotherapists, pharmacists, lawyers and vets are commissioned as Lieutenants or above

    depending on their experience or qualifications.

    UNIFORM ALLOWANCEA uniform allowance is payable on commissioning. The amount is dependent on theregiment or corps into which a candidate is commissioned and the type of commission held.The amount is paid as a tax-free lump sum. Thereafter, an income tax allowance is given bythe Inland Revenue to cover upkeep.

    FOOD AND ACCOMODATION CHARGESCharges are raised for food and accommodation provided by the Army. The presentaccommodation charges are up to 5.38 per day for Captains and below and up to 6.62 forMajors and above. The daily food charge is 4.43. Married officers living in married quarters

    will pay a monthly accommodation charge of between 402 and 829, depending on theirrank and the quarters size.

    COUNCIL TAXAll personnel are responsible for paying Council Tax in accordance with current legislation.For those living in service accommodation, a contribution towards Council Tax is chargedwithin their overall accommodation charges.

    ALLOWANCESCertain allowances are payable. For example a local overseas allowance is payable to offsetthe extra costs of living overseas. Similarly, both single and married personnel might beeligible for a separation allowance when serving away from duty stations for periods of 10days or more.

    ADDITIONAL PAYCertain specialist roles (e.g. pilots, parachutists, divers and Special Forces) receiveadditional pay. Personnel permanently stationed in Northern Ireland receive a residencesupplement currently worth 7.36 per day.

    RETIRED PAYAll officers who are in full receipt of full-time pay are members of the non-contributory ArmedForces Pension Scheme. All pensions are paid at age 65 provided they have served at least2 years. In addition to this preserved pension, officers are eligible for Early Departure

    Payments and a tax free lump sum after completing 18 years service and having reachedage 40. Those officers serving until their 55th birthday will receive a further tax free lump sumand their pension when they retire.
