Background• Ratan Naval Tata, chairman of the Tata Group, one of India's
largest corporation.• Born into the wealthy and famous Tata family of Mumbai, on
December 28th 1937.• Great grandson of Tata group founder Jamsetji Tata.• Raised by grandmother Lady Navajbai as his parents
separated when he was 7 years old.• A business tycoon who is shy by nature and does not believe
in flaunting. • He is single and leads a modest lifestyle in his bachelor

(1962)Joins Tata Group after studying architecture at Cornell in US. Next 6 years, he has assignments in Jamshedpur at Tisco and Telco.
• (1978)Sends a confidential note to JRD Tata on the groups long term direction, defining objectives and creating a new structure.

(July 1981)Sends another note JRD on the need to operate as a unified organization rather then a loose confederation of states , which Tata was seen as then.
(September 1981)JRD sees the spark in Tata: appoints him director in 2 holding companies and elevates him to chairman of Tata Industries.

• (1982) while his mother is undertaking treatment of cancer in New York, Ratan starts scripting a blueprint for house of Tatas.Enter into high –tech sectors ,group all Tata companies into 8 synergistic clusters.
• (1988) Elected chairman of Telco.

• (1989)Elected chairman of Ratan Tata Trust after the death of his Father Naval death.
• (1991) 87 Year old JRD Tata resigns as chairman,reccomends Ratan Tata as successor. All 16 members of board agree.

• (1993) Presides over a meeting that sets a retirement age for senior management ,after Tisco chairman Russi Modi walks out of the meeting ,declaring it close.
• (1998) A group Executive officer is established, comprising Ratan Tata and 5 other members, to oversee the performance of the companies.

• (1999) Six years after he suggested a made in – India -car- indica is launched . Italian styling, French engine design, Japanese instrumentation and Indian engineering.
• (1999) Tata unveil new group logo.

• (2000)Tata acquires Tetley for $341 million, the biggest overseas acquisition by any Indian company.
• (2002) Tata acquires controlling stake in VSNL.

• (2004)Tata motors list on NYSE,buys the heavy vehicle unit of Daewoo Motors, South Korea .
• (2005)Yet more acquisition : Singapore Steel based company NatSteel, cable company Tyco global network and the hotel in New York.

• (2007)In a keenly contested battle, Tata steel acquires Anglo Dutch company Corus and becomes the world 5 th largest steel manufacturer.
