2 Using PlainDAC with a Raspberry Pi

PlainDAC features a 40 pin ribbon cable connector as well as through hole access to all the important signals. Both ways can be easily used to connect it to a Raspberry Pi single-board-computer. Drivers are already included in the standard Raspberry Linux kernel and just need very basic configuration.

3 Connection via ribbon cable To connect PlainDAC to your Rapberry the very clean but also flexible way just use our special RPi Adapter. It comes with several screws, spacers and washers as well as a 100 mm FPC ribbon cable and a through hole connector that needs to be soldered in by you.

This is what the adapter kit contains.

Take two spacers and mount it next to the GPIO connector of your Raspberry.

Stack on the large 40 pin connector with about one millimeter space at the bottom.

Place the adapter PCB on top. Watch out for the correct position as shown below.

4 Connection via jumper wires For prototyping purpose you can also connect your PlainDAC to the Raspberry Pi using standard jumper wires. In this case you just need to populate the 10 pin / 2 row connector on PlainDAC and connect the wires.

5 Software configuration Open up an SSH connection to your Raspberry. Open the /boot/config.txt file for editing. Append the line dtoverlay=iqaudio-dacplus at the bottom. Now do a reboot and everything should be up and running.

Take your soldering iron and solder all the 40 through hole pins. A good practice is to tighten the two nuts to keep the PCB in place.

Finally insert the ribbon cable in the adapter and also in your PlainDAC. Mount PlainDAC and the Raspberry on a solid surface or case.

Solder in the connector. Refer to the PlainDAC datasheet the PCB backside for the pinout.

Connect the wires to the GPIO header or your Raspberry.
