1 GENERAL

RASC is a support system for operating and maintaining certain digital office-phonesystems of the BusinessPhone family. This document gives you an overview aboutRASC and its application fields.

RASC is the abbreviation forRemoteAccessSupervision andConfiguration.

RASC supports• BusinessPhone 250,• BusinessPhone 50 and• BusinessPhone 150.

The exchanges supported by RASC have not the same features. RASC adapts itself byoffering different menus, depending on the programmed model of the exchange. TheUser’s Guide informs how to set the programming model.

2 DESCRIPTION

The support system RASC consists of an IBM-compatible PC, software for operatingand maintaining exchanges and equipment for the connection between the PC andthe exchanges.

SOFTWARE

The software is the heart of RASC. It is available on the diskette set LZY 203 2250. Theset contains an install program that leads you through the installation.

COMPUTER

The software runs on IBM-compatible Personal Computers. This PC needs a hard diskstorage. See the document „START OF OPERATION“ for a detailed installation de-scription.

MODEM

You can connect your computer locally to the exchange or you can use a modem forremote configuration and maintenance purposes.

The software contains functions for control of a Hayes modem. RASC uses the mo-dem to call the exchanges and to communicate with them.

An appropriate cable connects the modem to one of the PC’s serial communicationports. RASC supports one of four serial communication ports (COM1, COM2, COM3 orCOM4).

3 APPLICATION FIELDS

RASC contains functions for operation and maintenance, embracing for example thepossibility to:• inspect and alter configuration data,• read PBA (Printed Board Assembly) configurations and software revision status,• read stored fault (error) information.

RASC is very flexible to use. You can connect RASC locally to the exchange – eitherpermanently or temporary. With a modem RASC becomes your remote maintenancetool. In OFF LINE mode you can even work with the configuration data, when not con-nected to any exchange.

LOCAL CONNECTION OF AN EXCHANGE

You can connect RASC directly to the exchange. So, configuration and maintenance arepossible at site as well.

Permanently Installed on Customer’s Site

Customers doing operation and maintenance by themselves or maintenance personnel onsite connect the RASC locally to the exchange.

If remote maintenance is not possible due to special reasons, the local connection ofthe RASC gives access to the system.

Itinerant Personnel

RASC allows also installation on portable PCs. O&M personnel take the RASC along tothe customers and connect the portable PC to the designated port in the exchange.

REMOTE CONNECTION OF AN EXCHANGE

With a Hayes modem you can connect remotely to BusinessPhone exchanges. PrimarilyRASC offers the same facilities for remote connections as for local connections to thecustomer’s exchange. Remote configuration and maintenance saves your time, moneyand saves you from extra trips to your customers. RASC remotely solves even hardwareproblems for the moment – for example by programming a faulty line temporally out ofservice – and final repair can take place when you are near the customer’s site.

The BusinessPhone exchange communicates either by means of an external modem atthe customer’s site (figure 2), or by means of the built-in modem, which is addressableby the exchange’s external lines (figure 3).

Operation and Maintenance Centre

RASC is also perfect for use in operation and maintenance centres. The „O&M centre“ isa part of an operation and maintenance organisation, which processes remote mainte-nance of exchanges.

OFF LINE

The OFF LINE mode is very useful to prepare for configuration and maintenance tasksbefore connecting to the exchange. In OFF LINE mode the RASC processes the ex-change’s data without any connection to the exchange.

The following examples show the purpose of the OFF LINE mode when using re-mote maintenance.

Task: The system needs analysis.Solution: Use the ON LINE mode to transfer storage dumps and fault logs and analysethe transferred data later in OFF LINE mode.

Task: A customer’s exchange needs remote configuration.Solution: (1) Load the system data (from the exchange in ON LINE mode or from thehard disk). (2) Use the OFF LINE mode to determine the configuration data (program)for the exchange. (3) Transfer the revised data to the exchange.
