    Chapter 1 - TheProphetic Word

The Bible is no t a systematictreatise on T heology, or Morals,or History, or Science, or anyot her to pic. It is a REVELATION ofGod, of the Fall of Man, the Wayof Salvation, and of God's "Plan

and Purpose in the Ages." It treatsof -

    1. Four Persons-God the Father,God t he Son, God t he Holy Spirit, and Satan.2. Three Places-Heaven, Earthand Hell.3. Three Classes of People-T heJew, the Gentile, and the Churchof God.

The Scriptures were given to uspiece-meal, "at sundry times and indivers manners." Holy men of Godspake as they were moved by theHoly Spirit, during a period of 1600

years, extending f rom B.C. 1492 toA. D. 100. The Bible consis ts of 66separate books; 39 in t he OldTestament, and 27 in the NewTestament. These books werewritten by about 40 dif f erentauthors. By kings such as Davidand Solomon; by statesmen, asDaniel and Nehemiah; by priests,as Ezra; by men learned in thewisdom of Egypt, as Moses; bymen learned in Jewish law, as Paul.By a herdsman, Amos; a tax-gatherer, Matthew; fishermen, asPeter, James and Jo hn, who were"unlearned and ignorant " men; a

physician, Luke; and s uch mighty"seers" as Isaiah, Ezekiel andZechariah.

It is not an Asiatic book, though itwas written in that part of theworld. Its pages were penned inthe Wilderness of Sinai, the cliff sof Arabia, the hills and towns ofPalestine, the courts o f theTemple, the schools of theprophets at Bethel and Jericho, inthe palace of Shushan in Persia,on the banks of the river Chebarin Babylonia, in the dungeons ofRome, and on the lonely Island ofPatmos, in t he Aegean Sea.

Imagine another bo ok compiled ina similar manner. Suppose, f orillustration, t hat we take 66medical books written by 40diff erent physicians and surgeonsduring a period of 1600 years, ofvarious schoo ls of medicine, as

Allopat hy, Homeopathy,Hydropathy, Osteopathy, etc., andbind them all together, and thenundertake to doctor a manaccording to that book, whatsuccess would we expect to have, and what accord would there be insuch a medical work.

While the Bible has been compiledin the manner described, it is not a"heterogeneous jumble" of ancienthistory, myths, legends, religiousspeculations and superstitions .There is a progress of revelationand doctrine in it. The judges knewmore than the Patriarchs, theProphets than the judges, the

Apos tles than the Prophets. TheOld and New Testaments are notseparate and distinct boo ks, theNew taking the place of the Old

they are the two halves of awhole. The New is "enf olded" inthe Old, and the Old is "unfo lded"in the New. You canno t unders tandLeviticus without Hebrews, orDaniel without Revelation, or thePassover or Isaiah 53 without t hegospels o f Matthew, Mark, Lukeand John.

While the Bible is a revelation f romGod, it is not written in asuperhuman or celestial language. If it were we could not understandit. Its supernatural origin howeveris seen in the fact t hat it can betranslated into any language and

not lose its virility or spiritual lif egiving power, and when translatedinto any language it f ixes thatlanguage in its purest f orm.

The language however of theBible is o f three kinds. Figurative,Symbolical and Literal. Suchexpressions as "Harden not yourheart, " "Let the dead bury theirdead, " are figurative, and theirmeaning is made clear by thecontext.

Symbolic language, like thedescription o f Nebuchadnezzer s"Colossus" Daniel s "Four WildBeasts " or Christ in the midst o fthe "Seven Candlesticks, " isexplained, either in t he samechapter, or somewhere else in theBible.

The rest of the language of t heBible is to be interpreted accordingto the customary rules o f grammarand rhetoric. That is, we are toread the Bible as we would readany other boo k, letting it say whatit wants to say, and not allegorizeor spiritualize its meaning. It is thisfalse method of interpretingScripture that has led us to t he

origin of so many religious s ectsand denominations. There arethree things that we must avoid inthe handling of God's Word.

    1. The Misinterpretation o fScripture.2. The Misapplication o f Scripture.3. The Dislocation of Scripture.

The trouble is men are not willingto let the Scriptures say what theywant to say. This is largely due totheir training, environment, prejudice, or desire to make theScriptures teach some f avoritedoctrine.

Then again we must no t overloo kthe "Parabolic Method" ofimparting truth. Jesus did notinvent it, though He largely used it,it was employed by the OldTestament prophets. In the NewTestament it is used as a "MysteryForm" of imparting trut h. Matt.13:10-12. A mystery is notsomething that cannot be known, but something that fo r the timebeing is hidden. I hand you asealed letter. What it contains is amystery to you. Break the seal andread the letter and it ceases to bea mystery. But you may not be ableto read the letter, because it iswritten in a language with whichyou are no t f amiliar. Learn thelanguage and the mystery ceases. But perhaps t he letter cont ainstechnical terms which you do notunderstand, learn their meaningand all will be plain. That is the waywith the Mysteries of theScriptures, learn to, read them bythe help of their author, the HolySpirit, and they will no longer bemysteries.

This brings us to t he greatquestion-

Is The Bible God's Book Or Man'sBook?

'I'hat is, did God write it, or is itsimply a collection of the writingsof men? if it is s imply a collectionof the writings of men, withoutany divine guidance, then it is nomore reliable than are the writingsof men; but if God wrote it, then itmust be true, and we can dependupon its statements. It is clearf rom the character of the Bible

that it is not the work of man, forman could not have written it if hewould. and would not have writtenit if he could.

It details with scathing andunsparing severity the sins o f itsgreates t men, as Abraham, Jacob,Moses, David and Solomon, charging them with f alsehood, treachery, pride, adultery, cowardice, murder and grosslicentiousness, and presents thehistory of the Children of Israel asa humiliating record o f ingrat itude, idolatry, unbelief and rebellion, andit is saf e to say, that the Jews,

unguided and undirected by theHoly Spirit, would never havechronicled the sinful histo ry oftheir nation.

How then was the Bible written? The Bible itself gives the answer.

"ALL Scripture Is Given ByINSPIRATION OF GOD." 2Tim. 3:16.

    I. What Are We To UnderstandBy the "INSPIRATION" of theScriptures?

We are to understand that Goddirected men, chosen by Himself ,to put into writing such messages, laws, doctrines, historical facts ,and revelations, as He wished mento know.

All Scripture ( the Graphe writing),is given by inspiration (The op-neu-stos), that is, is-

    GOD BREATHED.

That is, God Himself o r throughthe Holy Spirit to ld holy men of oldjust what t o write. The Bible , then,IS the Word of God, and does notsimply here and there contain it.God is a Person and can bothWrite and Speak. He wrote the two"Tables o f Testimony" on st one.Ex. 31:18; Ex. 32:16, and on thewall of Belshazzar's Palace. Dan.5:5, Dan. 5:24-26. He talked withMoses on the Mount when Hegave him the Specifications f orthe Tabernacle and its f urnishings, and all the Levitical Law and orderof service. He spoke at theBaptism of Jesus (Matt. 3:17), and

on the Mount of Transfiguration.Matt. 17:5, and one day whenJesus was t alking to the multitude.John 12:27-29. But God not onlyspoke directly to men, He spoketo t hem in the person of Jesus,f or Jesus was God Manifest InThe Flesh. John 1:1-3, John 1:14.1Tim. 3:16. Matthew and John'sGospels contain 49 chapters,1950 verses, 1140 of which, almost t hree-f ift hs, were spokenby Jesus, and He claimed thatwhat He spake, He spake not o fHimself , but that the Father whichsent Him, gave Him commandmentWhat He Should Speak. John12:49, John 12:50. We see t henthat God can bot h write andspeak, and theref ore can tellothers what t o write and speak.

II. Does the Inspiration of theBible Extend to Every Part?

Yes. From the dry lists inChronicles to the very words o fGod in Exodus, and throughChrist. And more, it extends toevery sentence, word, mark, point,

jot and t itt le in the originalparchments . When Jesus said inMatt. 5:17, Matt. 5:18, That not

one "jot" or "tittle" should passf rom the Law until all be fulf illed,he referred to the smallest lett er(jot) and the smallest mark (tittle),of the Hebrew language, thusindicating that even they wereinspired, and were necessary f or acomplete understanding of God'smeaning in His Word.

But how about the words ofSatan, and wicked and uninspiredmen, the genealogical tables, andthe account of the Fall of Man, theFloo d and other historical portionsof the Bible. They were inspired ofRecord. That is, the inspiredpenman or historian was to ld whathistorical facts t o record and whatto omit. To one who has read theOld Testament, and also prof anehistory covering the same period, with its legends and traditions,

and detailed descriptions, it is veryclear that the writers of the OldTestament were divinely inspiredto record only those things thatwould throw light o n God's Planand Purpose in the Ages.

III. HOW Were These MenInspired to Write t heScriptures?

Were they simply thrown into akind of "spell, " or "ecstasy, " or"trance, " and wrote under itsinf luence whatever came into theirmind. or did God through the HolySpirit, dictate to them the exact

    words to use?

We know that thought can only beexpressed in words and thos ewords must express t he exactthought o f the speaker or writer, otherwise his exact t hought is notexpressed. We see then thatinerrancy demands that the sacredwriter be s imply an amanuensis. This we see is what the Scripturesclaim f or themselves. In 11 Pet.1:20, Pet. 1:21, we read that -"Noprophecy of the Scripture is ofany private interpretation." That is,no man has a right to say what theScriptures, according to hisopinion, means. Why? Because-

"The Prophecy came not in oldtime by the will of man, but holymen of God spake as they wereMoved by the HOLY GHOST."

And this is conf irmed by the f actthat much that the Old TestamentProphets wrote they did notthemselves understand 1Pet. 1:10,1Pet. 1:11. They must then haveseen mere amanuenses, recodingwords that needed an interpreter. That they were mere instrumentsis shown by the fact that no t all of

    them were good or holy men, asBalaam (Num. 22:38; Num. 23:26),King Saul (1Sam. 10:10- 1Sam.10:12; 1Sam. 19:20-22), theProphet of Bethel (1Kings 13:7-9;1Kings 20:22; 1Kings 20:26), andCaiaphas, John 11:49-51.

That the Old Testament writersspake and wrote the exact wo rdsthat God gave to t hem is clearf rom their own statements..Moses declares that the Lord saidunto him-"Now therefore go , and Iwill be with thy mouth, and teachthee what tho u shalt s ay."- Ex.4:10-12. The Prophet Jeremiahsays-"Then the Lord put forth Hishand, and touched my mouth, Andthe Lord said unto me,

Behold, I have put My Words InThy Mouth." Jer. 1:6-8.

Ezekiel, Daniel, and all t heprophet s make the same claim. The expressions- "The Lord Said, ""The Lord Spake Saying, " "ThusSaith the Lord, " etc., etc., occur560 times in the Pentateuch, 300times in the Historical andProphetical books, 1200 times inthe Prophets (24 times in Malachialone), in all over 2000 times in theOld Testament, thus proving thestatement of Peter, that Holy menof God spake as they were movedby the Holy Ghost .

But you say-"If this be true howdo you account for the differenceof style of t he writers; for Isaiah'sstyle is diff erent fro m Fzekiel's orDaniel's, and Peter's f rom that o fJohn or Paul? " This is easilyexplained. On the principle thatwhen we wish a legal do cumentwritten we choose a lawyer, or apoetical article a poet, etc., soGod when He wanted to speak insymbols chose an Ezekiel, aDaniel, a John, or in poetry aDavid.

How are we to explain the factthat sometimes a New Testamentwriter in quoting f rom the OldTestament, instead of quotingliterally paraphrases thequotation? For inst ance inAmos9:11we read:

"In that day will I raise up t heTabernacle of David that is f allen, and close up the breachesthereo f ; and I will raise up hisruins, and I will build it as in t hedays of old."

But when the Apost le James, inthe First Church Council at

Jerusalem, quotes this pass age,he paraphrases it, saying-

"Aft er this I will return, and willbuild again the Tabernacle ofDavid, which is f allen down; and Iwill build again the ruins thereo f ,and I will set it up."Acts 15:16.

Why the change in the wording?Simply because the autho r of bothpassages was not Amos orJames, but the Ho ly Spirit, and anauthor has a perfect right tochange the phraseology of astatement he may make in the f irstchapter of his book, in the tenthchapter, if by so doing, withoutcont radicting himself , he can makehis meaning clearer.

That is an illuminating statement in

1Pet. 1:11, where the Apostle tellsus that it was the "Spirit of Christ"that testif ied through theProphets of His "Suff erings." Thatis, the "Spirit of Christ" to okpossession of the Prophets andthrough them forecast orprophesied his "Suff erings" on t heCross, as in Isa. 53:1-3.

The question is of ten asked, "Isthere any diff erence between BibleInspiration and the so -called'inspiration' of Poets , Orators,Preachers, and Writers of today? "In answering the question we mustdistinguish between "Inspiration, "

    "Revelation, " and "Illumination."

As we have s een "BibleInspiration" is something to tallydiff erent and unique f rom theinspiration of Poets, Writers andPublic Speakers. It is an inspirationin which the Exact Words o f God

Are Impart ed to t he Speaker o rWriter by the Holy Spirit.

The Ages As Viewed fro mDiff erent Standpoints

"Bible Revelation" is the disclosureto men of things that theyotherwise could never know.

Things hidden in the mind of Godsuch as His "Plan and Purpose inthe Ages."

"Bible Revelation" ceased with theBook of Revelation. There hasbeen no new revelation f rom Godsince then. When men today claimthat they have received some newrevelation they must be classed asimposters.

"Spiritual Illumination" is diff erentf rom either Bible Inspiratio n orRevelation. It is the Work of theHoly Spirit in the Believer, by whichhe has his "SpiritualUnderstanding" opened tounderstand the Scriptures. John16:12-14. The "Natural Man"cannot receive the things of thespirit of God, " neither can heknow them, because are SpirituallyDiscerned. 1Cor. 2:11-13.

The work then of the Holy Spirit inthese days is not to impart somenew revelation to men or t oimspire them to write or speak asthe Prophets and Apostles of old,but to so illuminate men's mindsand open up their understandingof the Scriptures that t heir heartwill burn within them as theycompare Scripture with Scripture, and have revealed to them God'sPlan and Purpose in the Ages asdisclosed in His Holy Word.
