WHAT IS CBD?

The Cannabis plant has many different varieties, including marijuana and hemp plants. In times past, it was associated with recreationalmarijuana use. Cannabis plants produce over400 compounds – and approximately 100 of these are unique to the plant and can be isolated for medicinal andother purposes.

CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and the central nervous system, a system in the body that main-tains core functions such as motor activity, pain per-ception, stress response and memory.

CB2 receptors are widely distributed throughout the peripheral organs in the body, serving as core compo-nents in the immune system, muscular system and car-diovascular system.

Cannabinoids are active chemical compounds found in the cannabis plants where they are synthesized and accumu-lated as cannabinoid acids, but when the herbal product is dried, stored and heated they are con-verted to CBD and THC for example.

1. WHAT IS CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is one of overa hundred different cannabinoids (chemical compounds) found in theCannabis plant. These are named Phytocannabinoids. CBD is one of the more well-known Cannabinoids along with THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol).

CBD and THC both have the same chemical formula. Still, they have different chemical structures, which ultimately result in different effects when they interact with specific receptors in our bodies. They are both found in the Cannabis plant, but in different concentrations, depending on the type of Cannabis plant.

2. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCEBETWEEN CBD AND THC?

According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile, but it is important to only buy and use a CBD product from a reputable source. Not all CBD products have gone through the stringent testing required before being sold.As for medication, it is always essen-tial to speak to your healthcare practitioner when using any supple-ments to get their professional advice.

3. IS CBD SAFE, AND CAN I TAKE IT WITH OTHERMEDICATION?

CBD assists with the relief of pain and inflammation, anxiousness, restless-ness and sleeplessness. It also supports health maintenance and enhancement. Many use CBD just for health maintenance – homeostasis – keeping our systems in balance.

4. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CBD OIL?

5. DO YOU NEED A PRESCRIPTION FOR CBD?

Our bodies produce their own Canna-binoids and are called Endocannabi-noids. When CBD, one of the Canna-binoids found in plants, is ingested, it can influence the cannabinoid recep-tors /enzymes and thereby,our Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which helps keep our body’s systems in balance. The CBD acts in multiple ways to enhance the effects of our Endocannabinoids and its benefits, whether assisting with the relief of symptoms related to pain and inflam-mation, anxiousness, restlessness or sleeplessness as examples.

6. CBD IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH, BUT HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

Although CBD was excluded as a banned ingredient in 2018 by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the organisation does not certify products. Anyone competing in a sport professionally is advised to check with their specific sporting body and to get each product tested to ensure compliance. Pure CBD products should have a Certificate of Analysis confirming that it does not contain any other cannabinoids, including THC.

7. CAN I USE CBD IF I AM APROFESSIONAL SPORTSMAN/ WOMAN?

THC is known to bind directly to certain receptors in our brain called CB1 receptors and can cause a “high” or euphoric effect. Being THC-free, CBD doesn’t cause that “high". In fact, it's thought to reduce the “high” caused by THC.

8. CAN CBD CAUSE A HIGH?

In May 2019, the Department of Health, under the recommendation of SAHPRA, decided to exclude CBD from the schedules and allow it to be sold, but under these guidelines:• Not more than a maximum dosage of 20mg per day of CBD,• Not more than 0.001% THC in the product,• Indications are for health maintenance, health enhancement and the relief of minor symptoms unrelated to a specific disease.

9. ARE PRODUCTS CONTAINING CBD LEGAL TO PURCHASE?

It is always about safety and quality, first and foremost.Purchase a product that meets these criteria:• It meets the regulations laid out by the Department of Health (See question 9)• It’s endorsed by a third-party institution such as the CRI (Cannabis Research Institute)• Moreover, the supplier should have a COA, which is a legal document that certifies the quality of the product and demonstrates that the batch conforms to defined specifications and that it has been manufactured in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant facility and is suitable for use in pharmaceuticals.
