Correct length, tension and pulley crowning....... .....The keys to RAPPLON performance
Measuring Rapplon:
Pulley crowning:
The correct belt length should be measured using a steel tape. The tensioning device must be set to the minimum so thatmaximum tensioning distance shall be available. Also ascertain the maximum running length.
For positive tracking of your RAPPLON flat belt, pulleys should be crowned with “ a gentle symmetrical curve” in line to DIN 111and/or ISO100 specifications.
These crown shapes should definitely be avoided as they considerably shorten theworking life of your Rapplon flat belt.
Multiple pulleys:For applications involving multiple rollers, we recommend the pulleys which have contact on the same side of the RAPPLONflat belt, be crowned to ISO specifications. See figures 1 & 2 below.
Fig. 1: Pulleys A,D,E & H should be crowned.
Fig. 2: Pulleys A,B & D should be crowned.
Tensioning RAPPLON :For optimal operation and life of your RAPPLON High Performance Flat Belts, correct tension at fitting is critical (see fig. 3 & 4). Note that our simple method is the most effective. Expensive tensioning devices are not needed. Refer to your Rydellsales technician for advice or the following nominal values can be used for classical RAPPLON flat belts.Uniform loads: 1.5 - 2%. Intermittent loads: 2-2.5%. Severe intermittent loads: 2.5-3%.
Fig. 3: Make two parallel marks on the upper side of theslack belt at 1000mm. With shorter belts you can pro-ratathe gauge marks down to 500mm or 250mm to suit.
Fig.4: Once the belt is fitted on the pulleys elongate thebelt until the distance between the gauge marks reachthe proper value/desired elongation. E.g. At 2.3% elongation the gauge marks will become 1023mm apart.(Pro-rata for shorter gauge marks).
Important: The drive must be rotatedseveral times, especially on multiplepulley drives, to spread the tensionevenly and then re-check the distancebetween the gauge marks to obtain anaccurate elongation measure beforerunning.

Troubleshooting RAPPLON High Performance Flat Belts
Problem Cure
Belt stretches excessively1. Incorrect cleaning.........................................1. Polyamide belts are hygroscopic, minimise use of water.2. Conveyor or drive is underbelted..................2. Recalculate drive and replace with a heavier construction belt.3. Material build up on rollers............................3. Clean pulleys and rollers of contamination.4. Frozen rollers................................................4. Remove icing on the rollers to increase friction, lag & groove the drive roller face.
Belt slips and squeals
1. Belt too loose..................................................1. Ensure belt is tensioned correctly to suit the load.2. Conveyor or drive is underbelted ...................2. Recalculate drive and replace with a heavier construction belt.
Belt creeps partly to one side1. Belt splice crooked or out of square................1. Re-splice the belt.
Belt creeps to one side or excessive edge wear1. Pulleys or rollers misaligned.........................1. Recheck and square with a T-square against the conveyor edge.2. Frozen or jammed rollers..............................2. Lubricate rollers, improve maintenance, square rollers if necessary.3. Frame or structure crooked or not level........3. Check alignment by stretching a string along frame edge, make correction, level frame4. Material build up on pulleys/rollers................4. Clean, improve maintenance by mounting scrapers or other devices. Belt creeps to one side on head pulley1. Head pulley or rollers out of line...................1. Realign the pulley/rollers perpendicular to the centre line, or move (in direction of belt run) that pulley/roller end to which the belt has shifted.2. Head pulley or rollers incorrectly crowned....2. Ensure pulleys are crowned in line with DIN111 and/or ISO100 specifications. Belt splice failure1. Wrong running direction...............................1. Ensure the splice is trailing on the top cover2. Pulleys too small..........................................2. Increase the pulley diameter or review belt type selected.3. Bending of splice in lateral direction or........3. Remove the cause of the bending or review belt selection. excessive back flexing. Belt wanders irregularly1. Belt is too stiff to properly run over pulley dia..1. Replace with proper belt or use larger pulley diameter.2. Lateral beat on multiple belt application...........2. Installation of ‘rake’ near the take up end may eliminate problem.3. Lateral beat on multiple belt application...........3. Eliminate shaft deflection by decreasing tension to the point the belts will run and track without slipping. Belt ply separation1. Edge of belt worn or broken due to excessive rubbing .............1. Check alignment of frame, pulleys and rollers (also see tracking).2. Pulley dia too small for the belt..................................................2. Increase pulley diameter, reduce tension. 3. Damage by abrasives, acid, heat, chemicals or oil ...............3. Select a belt resistant to these items. 4. Excessive pulley crowning.........................................................4. Check crowning recommendations.
Excessive cover wear1. Belt slipping on drive pulley.............................1 Increase tension slightly or install snub roller for better wrap on the pulley.2. Belt cover wears too fast.................................2.Review the cover type to suit application e.g. Rubber, leather or fabric.3. Frozen or dirty rollers......................................3. Lubricate rollers, improve maintenance. Belt cover softening or cracking1. Damage by abrasives, acid, heat., chemicals or oil ....1. Select a belt resistant to these items..2. Pulley diameter too small for belt thickness.................2 .Reduce pulley diameter or review belt type selected.3. Excessive belt tension..................................................3. Reduce tension.
