Recently updated standards as well as several under development for future introduction, indicate
data rates of 25Gbps, 40Gbps, 100Gbps, 200Gbps and 400Gbps. These future technologies are
based around utilising two or eight fibres per physical link and depend on several factors including
the bit rate of the laser and the number of separate wavelengths (λ) that are utilised in a single
fibre. Two-fibre transmission lines are not new and nor is the use of twelve fibre parallel fibre
transmission lines, however the future suggests that the number of required transmission lines will
cycle from two to eight and back to two again over the foreseeable future.
A key consideration for data centre owners and designers is maximising fibre utilisation whilst
ensuring an optimised physical layer design that is capable of scaling as the demands placed
upon it do. This is never more important than in Hyperscale and Edge data centres where
unprecedented growth is being observed. Innovative fibre transceiver designs and optical
components are delivering higher data rates per lane, enabling the total number of required fibres
to be reduced.
Green-field fibre deployments are able to take advantage of the eight fibre solutions, whereas
legacy installations may require innovative migration strategies to maximise the utilisation of the
physical infrastructure. HellermannTyton’s range of transition cassettes offers the perfect resolution
(see page 10).
The topic of fibre polarity is further complicated when eight (or twelve) fibres are considered. The
following pages start to discuss the subject of polarity and which aspects influence component
selection. HellermannTyton offer the three standard polarity options of A, B and C in the RapidNet
8 Fibre solution (see page 6 and 7).
Demand for faster data rates, access times and higher performance continues to drive data centre designs. The latest designs incorporating leaf & spine and edge architectures are creating reduced latency, more flexibility and the ability to scale upgrades as and when required.

What is an MTP® connector? The MTP connector is a high performance MPO connector with multiple engineered
product enhancements to improve optical and mechanical performance when compared to generic MPO connectors.
The MTP connector is in complete compliance with all MPO connector standards including the EIA/TIA-604-5 FOCIS 5 and the IEC-61754-7. The MTP connector is inter-matable with all generic MPO-style connectors that are compliant to these industry standards.
Generic MPO connectors are limited in performance and are not able to offer the high performance levels of the US Conec MTP connector.
RapidNet Overview
Modular and pre-terminatedRapidNet is HellermannTyton’s fully patented pre-terminated, pre-tested modular cabling
system, eliminating the need for on-site terminations and reducing installation times
significantly. All terminations are housed in the RapidNet cassette, ensuring complete protection
and strain relief of the cables.
Manufactured at HellermannTyton’s purpose built facility in Northampton, UK, RapidNet
provides choice and flexibility to the installer and end user by offering an extensive range of
connectivity options in both fibre and copper formats. All RapidNet formats are based on a
common cassette delivering consistent performance, breadth of range and maximum flexibility.
RapidNet delivers a full end to end pre-terminated solution for any network application
including data centres, comms rooms, commercial offices, call centres, hospital and
educational environments.

The HellermannTyton 8 Fibre range is offered in various configurations and options to suit typical
deployment requirements of flexibility, performance and optical loss management.
Connection options
Cassette to Cassette The cassette to cassette offers localised patching fields at
both ends of the link. This configuration is beneficial when
there isn’t the immediate requirement to utilise all the
ports.
Cassette to Fan Out With the cassette providing local patching at one end,
the fan out can be connected directly into the active
equipment, reducing losses and saving cabinet space.
Transition Cassettes Transition cassettes are used to convert from multi-fibre
to single fibre (MTP to LC) or different fibre count MTP to
MTP. In either case they use a standard cassette with a
rear MTP connection, ideal for use in either re-configuring
existing installed cables or when access and cable
management may be limited.
Fan Out to Fan Out CablesThe fan out option removes localised patching at both
ends, saving space in the cabinets and reducing optical
losses in the link. These cables are offered in various
configurations and are particularly suited to applications
where the active equipment or hardware at each end is
located either in the same cabinet or row.
Patch leads There is a wide range of patch leads available, all suitable
for the above connection methods and are supplied in
various configurations and lengths to suit the optical
polarity of the channel.

Large data centres are already demanding 40G and 100G transmission speeds. When specifying for these projects it is important to understand the various f ibre systems and configurations that wil l be able to support these higher data rates.

For multi‐fibre designs using MTP connectors, the TIA 568 standard lays out three methods for
configuring systems to ensure that proper connections are made: polarity options A, B and
C. Each of these options deliver the transition from a transmit position to a receive position in
a different way, and each option requires a specific backbone and patch cable that differs in
construction to the other polarity types.
Before we look at the different polarity options on page 7, illustrated below is an MTP
connection showing how the connectors differ in terms of male, female, key up and key
down configurations.
Each MTP connector has a key on one side of the connector body. When the key sits on top, this
is known as the key up position. In this orientation, each of the fibre holes in the connector is
numbered in sequence 1 to 12 from left to right. Each connector is additionally marked with a
white dot on the connector body which identifies the position 1 side of the connector when it is
plugged in.

Fibre polarity becomes a little more complex when working
with multi-fibre MTP type cables and connectors. Industry
standards list three different polarity methods for MTP; A, B
and C. And each polarity option requires the use of a different
MTP cable.
• Polarity A uses a straight-through MTP trunk cable with a
key up connector on one end and a key down connector on
the other end so that the fibre located in Position 1 arrives at
Position 1 at the other end (see figure 2).
• Polarity B uses key up connectors on both ends to achieve
a cross-over or reversed polarity meaning the fibre located in
Position 1 arrives at Position 12 at the opposite end, the fibre
located in Position 2 arrives at Position 11 at the opposite
end and so on (see figure 3).
• Polarity C uses a key up connector on one end and a key
down on the other end like the Polarity A method, but the
flip happens within the cable itself where each pair of fibres
are flipped so that the fibre in Position 1 arrives at Position
2 at the opposite end and the fibre in Position 2 arrives at
Position 1 (see figure 4).
With the 3 different polarity types, the potential for mistakes in
deployment is higher so it is important that the correct cables
are used.
The two types of adaptors, key up - key up and key up - key
down also have a role to play in determining the end-to-end
channel polarity, whether MTP’s are used throughout or fan
outs are deployed in the final connections.

The 8 fibre system will support high speed 10G networks and beyond. High port densities can be
achieved using RapidNet MTP cassettes providing up to 144 fibres per cassette or up to 576 fibres
in 1U of rack space.
HellermannTyton only use quality ‘Elite’ components in the pre-terminated MTP assemblies,
helping to ensure the highest possible performance from the fibre with minimal losses.
With the increase in speeds and demand for performance, the channel lengths and loss budgets
are reducing to accommodate and achieve these higher speeds. The tables below illustrate the
fibre performance for OM4 and OM5 8 fibre configurations:

Even big things have small beginnings. You have to work with what you’ve got – and that was exactly what our company founder Paul Hellermann did back in 1935. Inspired by the small rubber tube in bicycle valves, he developed a process for binding electric cables with rubber: the Hellermann grommet and three-pronged pliers. The first two of the hundreds of patents filed since then.
