Beneath the Rapide’sbeautiully sculptedbodywork, there is unctionand practicality. The generousluggage space is accessedvia a large tailgate, whichshuts to blend seamlesslyinto the Rapide’s voluptuousfanks. Inside, the hand-trimmed individual rear seatscan each be olded fat at thetouch o a button to nearlytriple the available load space.

The rear doors neatly bridgethe transition rom fank toshoulder, their edges ormingan elegant upward sweepthat reaches nearly to theRapide’s roofine. All ourdoors use Aston Martin’strademark ‘swan wing’mechanism, rising up and outat 12 degrees. The openingangle, meanwhile, has beenincreased to 70 degrees,acilitating easy access tothe exquisite rear seats.

The Rapide’s ability isconveyed through thecar’s stance and prole,demonstrated by its length,our doors and slightly raisedroofine, all o which allow theline o the low bonnet to fowgraceully along the length o the bodywork, over the rontwheel-arches and along the

The Rapide is powered by Aston Martin’siconic, 6.0-litre V12 engine. The all-alloy,quad overhead camshat, 48-valve enginehas a displacement o 5935 cc. Each unit ishand-assembled at Aston Martin’s dedicatedengine plant in Cologne, Germany. Tuned andengineered to deliver high levels o perormanceand renement, the engine produces 350 kW(477 PS/470 bhp) with broad torque delivery(600 Nm/443 lb t at 5000 rpm) that allows

or both eortlessly smooth progress andinstant acceleration. Power is delivered tothe rear wheels through a rear mid-mounted Touchtronic 2 automatic gearbox, a six-speedunit that is precisely calibrated with the engineto provide broad fexibility in ‘Drive’ mode, aswell as having a highly responsive characterin ‘Sport’ Touchtronic mode, when shits canbe activated using the cast aluminium, leather-covered paddles sited behind the steeringwheel. ‘Sport’ Touchtronic mode sharpensand shortens gearshits or a more dynamicdriving experience.

The Rapide’s dynamics, high- and low-speedbehaviour and mechanical integrity were honedover an extensive two-year test programmeinvolving thousands o miles on the legendaryNürburgring Nordschleie in Germany, whileintensive hot- and cold-weather testing tookplace in climates as diverse as Sweden, Kuwait,USA, Italy, Austria and Spain.

Not only is the Rapide the embodiment o automotive elegance, but its lithe orm is highlyaerodynamically ecient. The integration o therear spoiler into the tailgate increases stability

at speed, contributing to unrivalled high-speed,long-distance cruising ability.

Every detail contributes to aerodynamiceciency and renement, rom the door-mounted wing mirrors to the fush door handlesand laminated glazing, with a sealing systemthat automatically drops and raises the windowwhen a door is opened and closed. The resultis a cabin with high levels o acoustic isolation,even at speed; alternatively, an ‘open allwindows’ unction incorporated into the ECUchanges the character o the cabin in an instant.

The Aston Martin Rapide is an exceptionalperormance car, as implied by the low, sleekand elegant bodywork. The track-honedchassis is equally at home on winding backroads, soaring mountain ascents or high-speedcontinental carriageways. Power delivery isnothing less than extraordinary, with a broadpower band giving the driver access to rapidacceleration at almost any speed.

Aston Martin’s 6.0 V12 engine is the Rapide’sheart, delivering peak power at 6000 rpmand peak torque at 5000 rpm. The resultant0-100 km/h (62 mph) time is 5.2 seconds,and maximum speed is 296 km/h (184 mph). A new exhaust system maintains the throaty,evocative sound o the V12 engine, whilealso ensuring high levels o renement orlonger journeys.

CONTROL As an involving, high-perormance car with highlevels o renement, the Rapide epitomises broaddynamic ability. The standard 20-inch wheelsare made rom orged aluminium, minimisingunsprung mass, and thereby improving ridecomort and handling. Tyres are BridgestonePotenza S001 (245/40 ront and 295/35 rear),eaturing a taller side wall to minimise vibrationtransmission into the cabin. The tyres give theRapide supreme levels o grip during cornering

and late braking manoeuvres. The steering rackratio o 15:1 has been tailored or agility, givingquick response at high speed as well as excellentmanoeuvrability at lower speeds.

The Rapide’s suspension builds upon Aston Martin’s extensive dynamic experience,employing a unique aluminium rear subrame,together with strengthened lower control arms,knuckle and ball joints, new upper control armbushes and tuned anti-roll bar, bushes andpowertrain mounts. The Bilstein continuouslyadaptive damping system, rst introduced on theDBS, is provided as standard equipment. The

dampers are specically tuned to the drivingcharacteristics o the Rapide and oer a ‘Normal’mode, in which they adapt to deliver greater ridecomort, and a ‘Sport’ mode or better handlingand control during dynamic driving. In eachmode, ve dierent sets o ride and handlingcharacteristics are available to maintain precisecontrol at all times. The system automaticallyadjusts to the appropriate setting according toinormation rom sensors monitoring throttle,brake, steering rack and vehicle speed.

The new-generation brake control moduleharmonises the Rapide’s electronic controlsystems. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), ElectronicBrakeorce Distribution (EBD) and TractionControl (TC) work together to ensure unparalleledpower delivery whatever the road conditions. The Rapide is the rst Aston Martin to eaturedual-cast foating brake discs, which combinecast aluminium with cast iron to maintain high

levels o heat resistance, and thereore eciency,whilst reducing unsprung mass to help withenhanced ride comort and improved handling. Additional saety systems include HydraulicBrake Assist (HBA), providing maximum brakingperormance in emergency situations, andPositive Torque Control (PTC), which matcheswheel speed to engine speed under emergencybraking, preventing rear-wheel lock-up. Whencombined with the ABS, the new brakes andelectronic control systems give the Rapideextremely eective stopping distances;moreover, the discreet nature o the stabilityand traction control systems means that they

do not intrude on the driving experience.

The Rapide is the rst Aston Martin to betted with an Electronic Park Brake (EPB),a unction devised to match and exceed theoperation o a standard mechanical handbrakeas well as to save space and improve cabinergonomics. The EPB switch is mounted inthe centre console and includes a ‘drive awayrelease’ eature that automatically disengagesthe EPB when the driver pulls away, providedall our doors are shut.

The Rapide is equipped with eight airbags,including dual-stage ront airbags activated intandem with seat-belt pretensioners, and sidethorax airbags. The our Door-Mounted InfatableCurtains (DMIC) provide each o the our seatingpositions with head protection in side impacts.

EXTERIOR

DESIGN

Design work was undertaken at Aston Martin’sDesign Studio, a bespoke creative workspaceat the company headquarters in Gaydon,Warwickshire, UK. Featuring an expansive studioarea, daylight viewing spaces and dedicatedworkshops, the acility allowed the designteam to observe the play o natural light on thesuraces, to view ull-scale models in daylightand dusk conditions and to ensure that everysurace orm demonstrates the quality, fuidity

and dramatic presence betting an Aston Martin.

Uniquely in this sector, the Rapide has aglass-to-glass connection between the ront andrear doors, with no exterior B-pillars. This givesthe car an uninterrupted, two-door coupe-likeprole. The rear three-quarter view accentuatespower, with strong haunches that fare out toenvelop the standard 20-inch, 20-spoke wheels.From the side, the Rapide’s prole illustratesgrace and style, while the ront three-quarterview presents a classic Aston Martin ace, subtlyupdated or the modern era and bearingdistinctive Rapide eatures such as the discreet

strip o LEDs running along the bonnet edge o the headlamp airing.

The Rapide has been constructed using Aston Martin’s extruded aluminium VHarchitecture, a highly fexible vehicle structurethat allows the designers and engineersexceptional scope. Using a system o chemicalbonding derived rom the aviation industry, the VH platorm is ultra-rigid and lightweight (it isused in the DBR9 GT1 race car, as well as in Aston Martin’s other sports cars) and has highlevels o torsional rigidity, increasing on-road

dynamics and saety perormance. Thebodywork is ormed rom a combination o aluminium, steel and composite, with theemphasis on high strength and low mass. The chassis has a torsional stiness o 28 kNm/ degree, making it highly resistant to fex andallowing or extremely responsive and predictablehandling. This inherent characteristic o the VHplatorm is undiminished by the Rapide’s longwheelbase. The centre o gravity is kept low bythe use o aluminium or the bonnet, roo anddoor skins; these are paired with steel bodysides and sheet moulding compound (SMC)wings and tailgate.

Like every Aston Martin, the Rapide ollows theethos o ‘truth to materials’, placing a premiumon authenticity. For this reason, machined andhand-nished solid metals are the materials o choice, and are used to accentuate detail andscale: or example, the cast magnesium boot-lidnishers that run the width o the car, and thestainless steel nishers on the cant rails anddoors. The bonnet louvres, meanwhile, areormed rom cast zinc, and the classic Aston

Martin grille rom extruded aluminium. Finally,the winged Aston Martin bonnet badge isrendered in pewter and enamel, just as ithas been or generations.

In prole, Aston Martin’s instantly recognisablemachined aluminium side strake has beenelongated to orm a key sculptural element,extending right across the upper portion o the ront doors beore disappearing into thesurace o the rear door. The strake creates apronounced design crease, aligned preciselywith the top o the ront wheel-arch and adding afow and dynamism to the side prole. The strake

houses an LED indicator, similar to that ound inthe DBS, while the ront o the car eatures anew, single-lens, bi-xenon headlamp design,incorporating a strip o LED direction indicators.Discreet, fush door handles contribute to thecar’s sleek lines and aerodynamic prole, whilelaminated side glass reduces medium- andhigh-requency cabin noise by 50 per cent.

DESIGN

The interior o the Rapide ollows the same‘truth to materials’ maxim as the exterior:every material is used honestly and unctionally. The acia and instrument cluster are classic Aston Martin, with dark zirconium dials on ablack surround that evoke the crat, style andattention to detail o a luxury chronometer. At the centre o the dashboard is Aston Martin’strademark glass starter module, into whichthe ECU (Emotion Control Unit) is inserted to

start the car.

The Rapide eatures an all-new ront seatdesign, especially sculpted to provide theright combination o sporting support andlong-distance comort. The seats are trimmed inleather (10 hides are used in each Rapide interior)and are heated as standard, while seat coolingor ront and rear is available as an option. Eachrear seat olds individually to orm a signicantlylarger luggage compartment (886 litres rom 317litres). The 90.5-litre uel tank, meanwhile, hasbeen designed to maximise the available luggagearea and acilitate a fat load space.

Careul attention to detail, rom the luggagecompartment and interior mechanisms to thematerial and trim on the seat backs, gives thecabin a holistic eel. The centre console runscontinuously rom the instrument pack throughto the rear seats, cosseting the occupants anduniting the space between all our seats. Viewlines have also been careully considered, givingrear passengers an optimal view o the roadahead, as well as optimising the acoustic qualityo the space, enabling easy communicationbetween ront and rear.

In addition to ISOFIX ttings as standard, the Aston Martin Rapide eatures a new range o dedicated Rapide child seats, supplied by aleading manuacturer and providing the highestlevels o car saety or children rom birth throughto Group 2. Featuring the Rapide logo, thesechild seats illustrate the car’s high levels o everyday practicality.

Although the Rapide is a driver-ocused car, therich cabin ambience provides a welcoming andcomortable space or three passengers, oeringchoices o entertainment technology, numerousinterior stowage areas and superior seats.No usable space has been wasted: the interiorincorporates door pockets, cup-holders rontand rear, pockets or phones and MP3 players,and central cubby boxes. In addition to LEDmap lamps, the cabin oers subtle ront and rearambient lighting, which provides sot, indirectlight as well as enhancing key sculpturalelements o the space.

The ront centre console contains the controlsor the dual-zone heating, ventilation andair-conditioning system, which is divided intoront and rear sectors, as well as the audio andnavigation controls and the centrally mountedclock. The Graphite inner area is surroundedby Iridium Silver trim, a theme that fows throughto the rear console. All the rotary controls areashioned rom turned, solid aluminium with asilver anodised nish. Other elements within the

console have a satin chrome nish.

The Aston Martin Rapide eatures a high levelo standard equipment, including the 1000-wattBang & Olusen BeoSound audio system.Developed rom the close relationship between Aston Martin and Danish audio specialist B&O,the bespoke sound system is tailored to theRapide and incorporates 15 careully placedspeakers. This creates an acoustically perectsoundstage tuned or the dynamics and ormo the Rapide’s cabin. Provision or connectingiPods and other MP3 players is included asstandard, allowing track access via the Rapide’s

audio display. Once the system has beeninitialised, the twin acoustic lens speakers risesilently rom the dashboard to provide optimumsound positioning.

Aston Martin has established its pioneeringactory at Gaydon in Warwickshire as a centreo cratsmanship and technology. The Rapidemarks the beginning o a new era or thecompany, with the introduction o a brand-newmanuacturing plant in Graz, Austria. Modelledclosely on Gaydon, the new acility oersspace, fexibility and the very latest production

technology, while maintaining the same ocuson quality and excellence.

The Aston Martin Rapide is truly bespoke. The host of trim options available, with myriadcombinations of colour, material and stitching,ensures that every Rapide is an individualexpression of its owner’s taste and desires.Options include a colour-keyed steering wheel tomatch the car’s interior and the application of anembroidered Rapide logo on the seat headrest ina range of colours, while high- and low-level trimareas in the cabin provide an almost limitless

number of possible combinations.

In addition to the standard Bang & OlufsenBeoSound Rapide audio system, the Rapide isoffered with a Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE)option. The system consists of two 6.5-inch LCDscreens integrated directly into the rear of thefront headrests, displaying input from a six-DVDchanger, MP3 players, games consoles or otherauxiliary devices. Individual controls allow eachoccupant to watch independently using wirelessheadphones, while the sound output can alsobe channelled through the powerful BeoSoundRapide system.

HERITAGE Aston Martin is one o the world’s mostdistinguished sports car manuacturers.It has produced exclusive, hand-cratedsports cars or over 90 years. In that time, just over 50,000 Aston Martins have beenbuilt and more than 80 per cent are stillin use, cherished, driven and raced byenthusiastic owners around the world.

The ounders o the company, Lionel Martin

and Robert Bamord, had a clear vision:to create sports cars with a distinctivecharacter; cars built to a high standard thatwere exhilarating to drive and own; cars withpower, beauty and soul. Those values remainintegral to Aston Martin today.

In 1947, Aston Martin was acquired byindustrialist David (later Sir David) Brown andsoon produced the rst o the amous ‘DB’series o cars. These iconic models were amongthe most beautiul and desirable o all sportscars o the 1950s and 1960s, and helped dene Aston Martin’s image and ethos, as well assecuring its long-term uture.

David Brown’s period o ownership also saw

Aston Martin win at Le Mans in 1959, withthe DBR1, and secure victory in that year’sWorld Sportscar Championship.

In 1964, Aston Martin made its big-screendebut when a specially customised DB5 starredalongside Sean Connery in Goldnger, the thirdJames Bond lm. More than 40 years on, thespecial relationship with 007 is still going strong– the legendary British secret agent drives an Aston Martin in both Casino Royale andQuantum o Solace.

A production version o Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage, powered by a standard V12 engine,won its class frst time out at the gruellingNürburgring 24-Hour race in 2009. In addition, Aston Martin is the only manuacturer to oera production-based racing car in all ourFIA-sanctioned sports car classes (GT1, GT2,GT3 and GT4), all o which have enjoyedconsiderable success around the world.

Customers are invited to share in this heritage:a visit to the HQ and actory at Gaydon inWarwickshire, or the Graz acility in Austria,orms an important part o the unique Aston Martin buying experience.

Racing remains frmly intertwined with thecompany’s DNA. Aston Martin made anevocative return to international sports carracing in 2005 when a Works-prepared DBR9took class honours on its debut at the 12 Hourso Sebring beore confrming its ability bywinning the amous Tourist Trophy outright atSilverstone. The main objective, however, wasalways victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours – a eatachieved in 2007 and 2008 when the DBR9

overcame its GT1 rivals to urther Aston Martin’senviable racing pedigree. For 2009, Aston Martinentered the premier LMP1 class at Le Manswith a new, purpose-built car powered by thesame production-based V12 engine that powersthe Rapide. Aston Martin fnished a creditableourth overall and, signiicantly, was thehighest-placed petrol-uelled car. It then wenton to win outright the second round o the AsianLe Mans Series in Japan and to secure overallteam and driver titles in the European Le MansSeries ater fnishing on the podium in all fve o the Series races.
