Transcript of Rapid prototyping
What is Rapid Prototyping ? The term “Rapid prototyping” refers to class of technologies that can automatically create models from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data.3d printer allow designers to create prototype of the design. It is an additive process.
The Basic Process :
Create a CAD model of the design. Convert the CAD model into STL format.Slice the STL model into thin layers.Construct the model one layer atop another.Clean and finish the model.
Rapid prototyping Techniques
Stereo LithographyLaminated Object ManufacturingFused Deposition ModelingSelective Laser SinteringSolid Ground Curing3-D Ink-jet Printing
Stereo Lithography :
Abbreviation : SLA
Material type : Liquid(Photopolymer)
Materials : Thermoplastics (Elastomers)
Min layer thickness : 0.02mm
Surface finish : Smooth
Build speed : Average
Applications : Form / fit testing, Functional testing, Very detailed parts, Presentation models, Snapfits..
Laminated Object Manufacturing :
Abbreviation : LOM
Material type: Solid(Sheets)
Materials : Thermoplastics such as PVC; Paper; Composites(Ferrous metals; Non-ferrous metals; Ceramics)
Min layer thickness : 0.05mm
Surface finish : Rough
Build speed : Fast
Applications : Form/fit testing, Less detailed parts, Rapid tooling patterns…
Fused Deposition Modeling :
Abbreviation : FDM
Material type : Solid (Filaments)
Materials : Polycarbonate, Polyphenylsulfonite; Elastomers
Min layer thickness : 0.15mm
Surface finish : Rough
Build speed : Slow
Applications: Form/fittesting, Functional testing, Small detailed parts, Presentationmodels…
Selective Laser Sintering :
Abbreviation : SLS
Material type : Powder(Polymer)
Materials : Thermoplastics: Nylon, Polyamide and Polystyrene ; Elastomers ; Composites
Min layer thickness: 0.10mm
Surface finish : Average
Build speed : Fast
Applications : Form/fit testing, Functional testing, Less detailed parts..
Direct Metal Laser Sintering :
Abbreviation : DMLS
Material type : Powder(Metal)
Materials : Ferrous metals such as Steel alloys, Stainless steel, Tool steel; Aluminium, Bronze , Cobalt-chrome, Titanium, Ceramics..
Min layer thickness : 0.02mm
Surface finish : Average
Build speed : Fast
Applications : Form/ fittesting, Functional testing, Rapid tooling, High heat applications, Medical implants, Aerospace parts..
3-D Ink-jet Printing :
Abbreviation : 3DP
Material type : Powder
Materials: Ferrous metals such as Stainless steel; Non-ferrous metals such as Bronze; Elastomers; Composites; Ceramics
Min layer thickness : 0.05mm
Surface finish : Rough
Build speed : Very Fast
Applications : Concept models, Limited functional testing, Architectural & landscape models, Consumer goods & packaging…
Application Of RP Technologies
PrototypingRapid ToolingRapid Manufacturing
It is also used in other various industries like aerospace,automative,jewelry,bio-medical etc…
Advantages :Almost any shape are geometric features can be producedReduction in time and cost from 50% to 90%Errors can be detected at earlier stageMaterial waste is reducedNo tooling is necessary
Disadvantages :Poor surface finish Limited strength Accuracy is less
