Introduction

Is life just a random walk? Some ana-lysts think so about the stock markets.Perhaps this bias is a spillover from theirtake on life. Who knows?

Others, myself among them, say lifefollows a natural order. It is predictable. While history may not repeat in an exactpattern as to place or time, the present of-ten is a rhyme to past events.

What do you think? If you have a strong desire to find a

better, more direct way to God, read on. Thetruth you seek may be at your fingertips.

3

Is Life a Random Walk?I was in the post office when a father

entered with his young daughter. The tod-dler started to run back and forth in thelobby, clutching a key.

When I went to my box for the mail, the little girl followed and watched withan intent gaze as I put a key into the lockand unlocked it. She seemed fascinated bythe process. It was apparent she had triedher key in several boxes without success.

Key of OpportunityShe stood and stared as I relocked my

mailbox. By then her dad had finished hisbusiness and was ready to leave.

Scooping up his little girl, he made forthe door then turned back and said, “When

4

you’re that age and you’ve got a key, thewhole world is a lock.”

I thought about it, trying to learn thespiritual message. It is this: The wholeworld is a grand opportunity, a mystery fora child, something to unlock with a key, todiscover what’s there.

Do you have such a key? How does itwork?

A Search for AnswersWho am I? What am I? Why am I here?

you come face-to-face with the very secretsof life and death. You unearth the trueknowledge that has eluded the mostlearned scholars of mainline religions.

Even now you stand at the foot of a newladder of discovery.

What are the ancient teachings of ECK?What do they involve? Can they improveyour life? Make you a better person? Theseare all questions you may well ask yourselfsomeday. Maybe today.

Help Me RememberWhat God Is Like

During the mass destruction of Hurri-cane Andrew in August 1992, many peoplein southern Florida lost their homes andall belongings. Some ECKists also felt thebite of its destruction. One such ECK fam-ily accepted shelter with another familyuntil money from the insurance companylet them set up housing again.

Their hosts told a story about their four-year-old girl and a brand-new baby in thefamily. Soon after bringing the newbornhome from the hospital, the hosts’ little girlmade a request. Could she please spend afew moments alone with the baby? At firstthe parents felt reluctance. Afraid of sib-ling rivalry, they wondered if she mightharm the infant. But the four-year-old keptbegging them to leave the nursery and lether stay with the newborn.

The parents gave in, but only afterturning up the volume on the nursery inter-com.

(Trust in God, but turn up the inter-com.)

6

They listened from another room, pre-pared to rush back in if needed. Instead ofdistressed cries, however, they heard theirdaughter’s soft voice address the infant. Her words were like a prayer.

“Baby,” she said, “help me rememberwhat God is like. I’m beginning to forget.”

Many children do, in fact, rememberwhat God is like—at least until they enterschool at age three, four, or five. Then thememory begins to cloud over. Good school-ing teaches them to be responsible adultsin society, of course. Yet at the same time apriceless gift is lost—a child’s understand-ing of God.

Straight AnswersWhatever your chosen religion or belief,

that choice is necessary for you at this stageof your journey home to God. That’s whyyou hold to it.

Your religion or belief is a valuable andimportant part of you because it ref lectsall your experiences from past lives.

Our spiritual heritage is far richer thana single lifetime could ever produce, the real

7

reason many enter this life with a specialgift or talent without the apparent need forlearning it. Some kids even reincarnate withthe knowledge of a foreign language whichtheir siblings lack. Parents who treat rein-carnation as foolish may simply dismisssuch a gift with an airy, “Oh, well, he suredidn’t get it from us,” and let it go at that.

They have no inkling as to where or howthe child picked up such an ability.

Learning the Spiritual LawsWhenever I look at a child, I see a little

adult. Mighty oaks from acorns grow. There’s no impulse to talk down to childrenonce you realize they are Souls returnedfrom an older time and place. They needtoday’s leg of their spiritual journey, too,the same as you and me.

Sometimes they reincarnate to wieldthe sword of fear or power, while at othertimes they come to demonstrate the Lawof Love.

A child of three, four, or five will dis-play a unique personality, perhaps an out-going or adventurous one. But by age eight

8

to ten, the child may suddenly turn shy andreserved. Upon reflection you’d say it isn’tthe same individual.

A young child often remembers the dis-tant past and may well speak of it.

A good question to ask a child of two tofour is this: What did you do when you werebig? You could be surprised if the child, ina nonchalant manner, sketches out a pastlife in broad details. Recognize it for that.

When people leave this physical life, they ascend to the next heaven, the AstralPlane. Some advance to a higher place, thesecond or third heaven. The second is theCausal Plane. St. Paul spoke of a thirdheaven. It is one of the regions in the up-per worlds where Souls go to rest, to learndifferent facets of spiritual law—includ-ing the Law of Love.

The books of ECK present these planesand laws in some detail.

How Children Enter a New LifeAfter a short or lengthy rest in the

higher worlds, we return to earth as a tinybabe. The body is a new prison of sorts.

9

This containment of Soul is the hardestpart of reincarnation to deal with. In thelast physical incarnation an individual wasperhaps an adult in a well-trained, func-tioning body. Now, with baby fingers, hewill try to pick up objects, but fail in theattempt. Eyes struggle to focus and makesense of a blurry world, but for some timea scene remains a smear of black-and-whiteshadings. Months pass, and a perceptionof color dawns. Little by little, the infant’smind develops in a heroic way to influencethe brain to put it all together.

In effect, the mind commands the brain,“OK, now sort out the light waves and makeorder from chaos.”

Of course, as our true, eternal Self—Soul—we exist beyond the human mind. From the lofty heights of Soul, we f lashmarching orders to our mind, which, inturn, passes them down the chain of com-mand to our physical brain for execution. And so the will develops. We thus move andact. We grow.

With the passage of time, the infantcomes to recognize Mommy and Daddy,

10

vague forms that begin to register as realobjects. It knows when the bottle’s on theway, and so forth. A baby thus learns toput things into categories or files.

Its growing ability to place a thing intoa familiar slot reduces the infant’s fear, making the world a more comfortableplace.

* * *A mother observed the way her young

child characterized things and put them intocategories of his own making. Around the ageof ten months he began to mimic certainsounds. Sometime later, the mother noticedthat every time they passed a body of wateror a drinking fountain, he would say, “Mo.”

One day she figured it out.She had been teaching him to drink

water from a glass. After each sip, shewould ask, “More?” The child had taken thecharacteristics of this wet stuff in the glassand put it into the wrong file. He thoughtits name was “more.” So anytime he sawwater, he tried to call it by that name.

A child learns bit by bit. First on its

11

agenda is the name of basic things—howto identify the concrete objects in the worldaround him.

How Do I Get God’s Love?Over time, children pick up the finer

subtleties of getting along with others. Ifthey have the good fortune of loving par-ents, they soon realize that as one gets love,he must also give it. Love is like water inthat only so much of it fits into a glass. Before more can go in, some must be letout. So, if one doesn’t keep giving out love,“mo” can’t come in.

People often wonder, How do I get God’slove? You get more of it by giving of yourown to others.

Spiritual SchoolAll in all, earth is a spiritual school.

Designed and set up by God, it lets each ofus, each Soul in this world, learn moreabout becoming godlike—becoming morelike God.

The whole purpose of you, me, and every-one else is to become more godlike. It is our

12

mission, or purpose, here. It’s the key tohappiness.

People may believe they’re here to marktime until the trumpets blow on the lastday. At that point, having pursued a frivo-lous life, they expect the Lord to catch themup to some better world, to let them em-bark upon a useless and self-centered ex-istence there too.

No. The true purpose of life here, there,or anywhere is to become a Co-worker withGod.

Our past lives have brought experiencesto polish us in a spiritual way. Like it ornot, you are now the best and highest spiri-tual being you have ever been in any earlierlife. Take a look at yourself. Like what yousee? Fine. But if you don’t like the face star-ing back at you in the mirror, keep in mindthat this reflection is of your own creation. You are today the sum of all your thoughts, feelings, and actions in past lives.

I once said that sincere people who at-tend an ECK event—like an introductorytalk on the Eckankar teachings—come be-cause of some dissatisfaction with their

13

belief or religion. Otherwise, why wouldthey be there?

Yet they may be aware only in part ofthe pressing nature of their search. ButSoul, the True Self, has heard and is yearn-ing to go home.

It’s simply a matter of time before aseeker’s search begins in earnest—perhapsa week, a month, a year, fifty years, thenext lifetime, or later—it matters not. Yetthis may be the lifetime that a seeker ad-mits, “I sense having lived many times inthe past. I may be the best I’ve ever been, but I want more. Much more.”

“I Want to Go Home”A child we’ll call Debra, for the sake of

privacy, was born with a valve defect in herstomach. Doctors were at a loss whethershe would outgrow the condition. All dur-ing Debra’s childhood, her parents had in-troduced her to strangers: “Our daughterwas born with a stomach defect. She doesn’tkeep food down very well.”

Negative comments like that added anextra burden to this poor child’s youth.

14

One day the problem reached a crisis.Debra’s parents found her turning blue andrushed her to a hospital. By luck and di-vine grace, she pulled through. The doc-tors who treated her predicted that thestomach valve, which they fixed, wouldcause no future problems.

Now, Debra’s older sister took a fiend-ish delight in making fun of her. Soon af-ter Debra returned from the hospital, hersister picked a fight. Family rules kept theolder girl from giving the younger one aphysical beating, yet verbal abuse andname-calling did the job. They left no vis-ible scars. On that particular day theyounger girl simply got tired of the hazingand turned on her sister. She beat up hertormentor. Outraged, the elder ran and toldtheir father. The wisdom of Solomon he hadnot, so he sent Debra to her room.

Debra was recovering from a seriouscondition, her sister had started the fight, but she’s the one banished to her room. Shelay weeping on the bed, crushed by the in-justice of it.

“I want to go home,” she cried. “I just

15

want to go home.” In a spiritual sense herheart was saying, “I want to go home toGod because of my unhappiness.”

Each of us is Soul. Once we laughed andsang in the high heavens of God’s pureLight and Sound—at play in the park. Butwithout the discipline or need to serve oth-ers, we (Soul) served ourselves. So God sentus to earth for the rich experience of liv-ing in a world of duality, to suffer and en-joy extremes like heat and cold, wealth andpoverty, or love and hate. It was all to learnthe true nature of love.

That’s our mission. The first big lessonis to learn to love ourselves.

So when young Debra cried, “I want togo home; I just want to go home,” her pleawas in a spiritual sense. In her abject mis-ery the faint, but not extinguished, memoryof Soul’s onetime home flooded in upon her.She remembered that her true home wasn’ton earth. She was but passing through.

Accept Life for What It IsAs Debra heard the sound of her own

words, she snapped from her self-pity and

16

returned to her human cage, timelessages—yet a mere heartbeat—from bliss inthe heart of God.

I am home, she realized. This time, she didn’t mean her heav-

enly home, but earth. Hard, merciless, uncaring earth.

“I’m as home as I’m going to get,” shesaid aloud. “It won’t get better here. So Imay as well wipe my tears and plan for theday I’m old enough to leave.” She stoppedcrying then. A key realization had stolenin upon her: Conditions might stumblealong at home, but truth to tell, they werewell within the limits of endurance. Thissuggested the need to accept her station inlife.

What an important realization for achild!

The Hand of GodDebra grew up, married, and endured

hardships that led to a budding maturity.Losing her firstborn son, the marriagemissing a breakup by a narrow margin, andother such suffering took her to the brink

17

of hopeless abandonment. One day, depressed and despondent,

she sought refuge in church. Catholicismwas the faith of her youth. Now she hadhit rock bottom. Inside the church, a prayerservice was in session, and worshipers allaround murmured soft prayers. At thatmoment, sunk in the depths of despair, shefelt a hand of comfort come to rest uponher shoulder. Her eyes f lew open in sur-prise. She glanced back to bless that gentleSoul’s touch, but empty air greeted her wid-ened eyes. No one stood near.

In a way, you could say it was the handof God through the personage of a divinemessenger. God Itself—in ECK we neithersay Him nor Her—does not descend intothe human theater to move among peoplein the normal sense.

Yet the Deity does send spiritual mes-sengers, often perceived as angels, saints, and the like. Debra realized it in a heart-beat. A guardian angel had indeed placeda hand of reassurance and comfort uponher.

Debra’s story is a wonderful example

18

of how you, too, may experience a gentlenudging from Divine Spirit (ECK) to helpyou on your journey home to God.

Even before leaving church she knewthat a gift of grace had touched her with aspecial blessing. This extraordinary mo-ment of realization was the assurance ofan ancient truth: life is more than a ran-dom walk. A divine presence had gracedher. As a Catholic more grounded in thephysical side of life than the mystical, shewas startled by such a realization of grace. It’d come through the touch of a gentle, al-beit invisible, hand.

Eternity Here and Now?The years passed. In time Debra bore a

second son we’ll call Jim. Once grown hetook an interest in spiritual things. Debradid too, though life’s trials left raw woundsthat begged for more time to heal. She stillexercised caution about religion.

Yet her view about the next spiritualstep was a childlike one. Intuition whis-pered that when a student is ready, theMaster appears, and the resulting linkup

19

is a most natural one. After all, hadn’t shealready waited years on end to discover thenext step to truth after feeling the handon her shoulder in church so long ago? What was another month or year?

Jim, however, with all the exuberanceand impatience of youth, took a more di-rect tack. “Eternity now!” he said.

One day he was reading an ECK book,in back of which was listed a phone num-ber. “What are you reading?” said Debra.“There’s something in it about eternity hereand now,” he replied. “I’m going to call thenumber and see what I can find out.”

A pleasant, cheery voice came on theline. An ECKist told of an upcoming meet-ing where someone would explain moreabout the teachings of ECK.

“I’m going,” he told his mother.Though leery of any religious teaching

other than Catholicism, she decided to joinhim to ensure no one took advantage of herbaby. “Mother, please,” he said, “don’t makea scene.” Jim could imagine her throwingangry accusations at the group. He offereda compromise.

20

“If you promise not to embarrass me,you may come.”

* * *So they set out. Near the end of the in-

troductory meeting on the teachings ofECK, a speaker addressed the group. “Togive you a better idea of what I’m talkingabout,” he said, “I would like to invite youall to sing HU with me.” Then, very softly,he and the others began to chant HU.

HU is an ancient, holy name for God.You can sing it at home. Simply sit or lie ina quiet place and sing HU (pronounced like“hue”). This age-old song lets the Voice ofGod enter you as love, Light, or Sound.

The Light and Sound of God are inte-gral parts of divine love known to but a few.The twin pillars of God’s love, they are themainstays of the ECK teachings. In fact, thespiritual travelers of ECK ride them out ofthe body and into the cosmic seas via SoulTravel, like a surfer riding ocean waves. This method is a direct route to finding love, wisdom, and spiritual freedom.

21

Debra’s mind drifted to a time three yearsearlier at a Renaissance fair. Astrology andmany other paths had exhibits there.

In a little room where people came tomeditate stood a crystal bowl. The host hadrun a stick with a rubber tip along the edgeof the bowl, producing a magnificent, sooth-ing sound. It was most beautiful and heal-ing.

* * *So at this ECK meeting Debra listened

to the others chant HU. That sound, thatsound! Where had she heard it before?Suddenly it dawned on her: it was like thesoothing sound at the fair. The stick withthe rubber tip running slowly around theedge of the crystal bowl had also made thissound of HU, ancient name for God.

She learned that an audiocassette of aHU Song was available at the ECK meeting.Full of excitement she bought one. It sur-prised Jim. “What are you doing, Mother? You never buy such things.”

She told him about the same wonderfulsound she’d once heard at the Renaissance

22

fair. She simply wanted to hear it oncemore.

A Trip to the ECK TempleMother and son became members of

Eckankar. Soon after, the Temple of ECKopened in Chanhassen, Minnesota, a sub-urb of Minneapolis. “Let’s drive to Minne-sota and see this place,” Jim said.

“Yes,” she agreed. “Maybe we’ll have agreat experience there.”

In her heart she knew she would. This occasion sparked a dim reminder

from her childhood, when she’d sobbed onthe bed: “I want to go home. I just want togo home.” She didn’t understand what shehad meant then, and even less now.

So they drove from the East Coast witha sadly out-of-date map of Minneapolis. Many changes since the map’s publicationhad all but rendered it useless. Upon reach-ing the outskirts of Chanhassen they askeda young gas station attendant for directionsto the Temple of ECK.

“Never heard of it,” said the youth.Back on the road, they tracked an un-

23

certain route to the town center ofChanhassen, certain of finding the Templeof ECK nearby. But to complicate matters, dusk had stolen upon them. Then, whileheading down the main street, a sense ofdéjà vu overcame Debra. She braked to astop in the middle of the street.

“Mother!” Jim said. “What are you do-ing?”

Frozen in wonder at the wheel, she re-plied, “I’ve been here before!”

Long years ago a recurring dream hadforetold this visit to a small town with whatseemed like a year-round winter. Except fora brief spell that natives call summer, thedescription fits Minnesota.

In her dreams she had walked past ahardware store, and then she would see thetown clock. The scene was always the same. She’d awake to a feeling of dreams morereal than waking life. Yet she’d forgottenthem until this very night.

“I’ve been here before,” she repeated.Traffic backing up behind them forced herto move on. Minutes later, they found theTemple of ECK near the edge of town.

24

This ECK Temple is a very specialplace. It’s an outer symbol for the holytemple of God within the heart of all people.Visitors to it often remark upon a pres-ence—a very definite, loving, divine one.The temple reflects and resonates with theLight and Sound of God, and many peoplemention this sense of being in a unique, holy place.

The Great Experience?Parking the car, mother and son en-

tered the ECK Temple and took seats inthe sanctuary. Debra waited in quiet ex-pectation, wondering, When will I have mygreat experience? Even as the thoughtarose, a soft voice from nowhere said, “Well, what do you want? Do you need to get runover by a truck?”

Already she’d forgotten the déjà vu ofminutes ago.

* * *Someone once asked me, “How do

people in ECK usually find truth?” Hemeant: does it hit like a bombshell?

25

Yes, it could be an experience to deeplystir the emotions and feelings. Yet moreoften its subtlety slips past people. So theymiss it. Within the hour, Debra had had amarvelous experience of locating the actualtown from recurring dreams years longgone. That was the “great experience.”

Great skeptics and doubters often gofarthest on the path to God. Someone mayask, “Is there hope for me? I don’t buy thisGod stuff.” No problem, take your time, forall seekers must proceed at their own pace.

But one truth I can give you is the wordHU, and the spiritual exercises to find God.Yet the success of these depends upon you.Can you spend a few minutes a day to openyour heart to the Holy Spirit? To do thespiritual exercises with love and passion? To give your whole mind and heart to sucha self-discipline for a few moments?

If the reply is yes, you are bound tomake progress in your quest for the secretlaws of life. Today’s mysteries will no longerbe mysteries tomorrow.

26

A Few Sounds of GodAfter Debra became a member of

Eckankar, she learned the meaning of abuzzing sound she’d heard for years. Thatsound is but another of the Sounds of God.It’s like a swarm of bees and originates onthe Etheric Plane, region of the subcon-scious mind. This plane lies beyond theMental Plane and is the highest of thespirito-material worlds. Beyond it is theSoul Plane, first of the true spiritual worlds.

She noticed this buzzing sound from theEtheric Plane because it was the level ofconsciousness she’d gained in past lives. Her next spiritual step was the Soul Plane.Early on in this life she’d reconnected tothe Etheric Plane, as evidenced by thisbuzzing sound.

There was another sound. This one was like the high, piercing note

of a lone musical instrument. Though itdidn’t hurt the ear it rose higher, soaringbeyond the range of human hearing, lift-ing her to new spiritual peaks. This pierc-ing note? Still another mode of God’s Voice. All who hear such divine sounds find a

27

purification of spirit and the blessings ofthe Most High. A breath of true liberty.

The Voice of God is the Holy Spirit inIts twin manifestations of Sound and Light. The more significant of the two for us isthe Sound.

TV and the print media give wide cov-erage to the light that people often reportafter a near-death experience. The Lightis often the earlier of the two manifesta-tions to appear, so more people remarkupon that aspect of the Holy Spirit. TheSound many times comes later.

Our focus here is on the Sound. It maybe like a heavenly choir, a magnificent or-chestra, or perhaps a Gregorian chant ofmedieval times. Again, Its echoes includesuch stirrings of nature as distant thun-der, the rustling of leaves, the chirp of acricket, the soft breathing of a lover, or themewing of a kitten.

The Sound of God lifts you to new spiri-tual heights.

Every holy sound corresponds to aplane or subregion of God, to blend withyour exact spiritual level. These sounds,

28

listed in many of the ECK books and dis-courses, are like signposts. A given soundis a valuable clue to the level of conscious-ness you reached in a past life or ref lectsyour divine station now.

This lifetime is a precious chance toreawaken to your true destiny. The path ofECK is the next leap to unraveling the se-crets of life.

The Voice of GodWhat are the Sound and Light of God?

What do they signify? The Light and Sound are the Voice of

God, the expression of God’s love for us.They comprise the whole of God’s love. To-gether, they are what religion calls the HolySpirit.

In speaking of the Light, we say, “Yes,there is such a thing as the Light of God.It’s a thousand times brighter than any sunor it may be softer than the light of a goldenmoon.”

The Light of God illumines your entirebeing, inside and out.

Other Sounds of God on the inner

29

planes may be like musical instruments, birds, choirs, machines, the ocean, high-pitched whistles, a murmur or crescendoof wind or water. Maybe the tinkling of joy-ous laughter. All these are holy sounds.

A word to help open your heart to God’slove is HU. It is an old, revered name for God.

Real Love in Light and SoundSome who hear ECKists tell of the Sound

and Light of God think of familiar terms likegrace, faith, or love. But careless use hasrobbed these words of their true meaning. The Sound and Light of God are the essenceof the Holy Spirit instead of a description ofIts attributes, like grace, faith, or love.

They are the real thing. The Sound and Light of God are actual

Light, which shines, and Sound, which ech-oes throughout all worlds. They uphold life.

For many seekers, the Light appearsfirst in one of Its many forms. Often Itcomes in the dream state. Some see It as ablue light in the shape of a candle or globe,as a yellow or pink light, green, violet, orwhite light. White, for example, reflects the

30

purity of God’s love; blue shows the love ofthe Mahanta, also called the Inner Mas-ter. Yellow is a pure spiritual color. Pink,an indication of God’s Light touching youremotions or feelings at the Astral level.

Whatever the color, It is one of the manysigns of God’s love for you. It is an assur-ance of divine grace.

It is a transforming presence for oneand all.

So what do you think? Is life just a ran-dom walk? Is your spiritual life at themercy of chance? Or is our life a spiritualpath in line with some natural order orrhythm as Debra found?

* * *The spiritual travelers of ECK roam the

cosmic worlds. They discovered their ownproof about life as a journey guided by adivine hand and now exist within God’sSound and Light. So may you. The great-est of the spiritual travelers was once aseeker, perhaps like you.

And what is there to gain? A certaintyof direction in life—and love.

31

Here’s a spiritual exercise to try ifyou want to experience the Light or Soundof God:

Shut your eyes and look into the Spiri-tual Eye. (It’s between your eyebrows, inthe center of your forehead.) Sing HU (like“hue”), an ancient name for God, one of themost powerful words for spiritual uplift-ment I can give you.

As you sing HU, listen for a holy Sound. It may come in any number of ways: likethe sound of a rumbling train, a singingbird, buzzing bees, a mellow f lute, or evensoothing guitars. It brings joy and wonder.

The holy sounds are the creative actionof the Life Force, the ECK, as It moves at-oms in the invisible worlds. The Sound toreach your ears resonates with your stateof consciousness.

While singing HU, imagine the holySound of God cascading over you, like a water-fall of sparkling pure waters. It is cleans-ing the blemishes of spirit. This Sound Cur-rent may also impart an insight into your

32

past behavior that is the root of a currentproblem today.

The Sound opens a secret path to thejoys of love and grace. You find peace, joy,and spiritual freedom.

You are at a crossroads. Will you take abold look at the Light and Sound of God asthe ultimate spiritual guide?

If yes, then you are ready for the beau-tiful and powerful teachings of ECK. Theyoffer the most direct route to wisdom, power, and freedom. And to love, the rich-est gift of all.
