By Dave Davison, High School PrincipalBy early August the “Back to School” specials begin to appear in newspaper ads.

Displays start to appear at the end of store aisles full of notebooks, backpacks, and other school supplies. Many parents, myself included, start looking downright eager about the end of summer when a normal routine can be re-established. Besides new school outfi ts and supplies, there are many great ways to help your children start off on the right foot for a successful school year. These steps that parents can take before school starts, and during the fi rst few days, can help make the transition back to school a smooth one. Here are some helpful tips offered by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals:

• Before buying back to school clothing, check the school’s dress code to ensure that your child will be in compliance.

• If your child participates in sports, make sure that he or she has had a recent physical exam, and that the proper forms have been completed and returned to the school.

• The beginning of each school year offers students an opportunity for a fresh start. Sit down with your student and set goals. Discuss the pros and cons of the previous year, and how some things can be changed for the better.

• Once the school year has begun, carefully review all information sent home. Complete and return any necessary forms. Organize the rest of the material in a special folder that you can keep handy.

• Make sure emergency contact information is updated and your child is aware of the new phone numbers etc.

• Finally, don’t be afraid to fi ll out the form for free or reduced-price lunch offered by the school district to students who qualify. This information is confi dential and no one in the lunch line can tell if your child is receiving this benefi t.

I look forward to working with parents, students, and our faculty to make the 2006-2007 school year a successful one for all. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

It’s ‘Back to School’ time!

Parents/guardians may call the guid-ance offi ce to register new students at Randolph Central School. To register new students entering grades 7-9, call 358-7028 to schedule an appointment with the guidance counselor. To register new students entering grades 10-12, call 358-7008 to schedule an appointment with their guidance counselor for August 24 or 29 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Parents/guardians are required to ac-company the student to the appointment and bring the child’s original birth cer-tifi cate, copies of academic records from previous schools, custody papers if ap-plicable and health/immunization records. Students cannot be registered without this information.

Summer guidance hours are weekdays, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m.

Call the guidance office to register

For a student to take medication dur-ing school hours, the school nurse may administer the medication if the parent or guardian submits a written request accompanied by a written request from a physician indicating the frequency and dosage of prescribed medication. The par-ent or guardian must assume responsibility to have the medication delivered directly to the health offi ce in a properly labeled original container.

For self-administered medication (in-halers) the school health offi ce must also receive written permission from the parent or guardian and the prescribing physician for the student to carry the medication with them. A record of such physician or health care provider/parental permission shall be maintained in the school health offi ce. The student will be required to re-port to the health offi ce on a periodic basis to maintain an ongoing evaluation.

Students who self-administer medica-tion without proper authorization, under any circumstances, will be referred by school nursing personnel. School admin-istration and parents will be notifi ed of such unauthorized use of medication by the student, and school administration may also be involved in determining the proper resolution of such student behavior.

This cherry gun cabinet was constructed by 10th grader Billy Barnes. The project was completed while taking Mr. Stark’s 20-week material processing class. The wood for this cabinet is from the wood lot owned by the District and was harvested by Mrs. Walker’s summer forestry class. Billy should be proud of his work.

M.S. Open House planned for

Aug. 29th & 30thEmma Cook (center of photo), a junior at RCS and an art student of Mrs. Barbara Ward, attended the New York State Sum-mer School of the Arts July 1-29 at SUNY Brockport.

The summer of 2006 marks the 37th

year of this program which is spon-sored and supported by the Offi ce of the Governor and the New York State Leg-islature and is administered by the State Education Department. Recognized as one of the fi nest programs of its kind in the nation, over 14,000 high school age students have become part of this unique summer experience. Alumni surveys attest to the success of the schools in helping high school students with special talents identify and pursue career choices in all fi elds of the fi ne arts at an early age. The School provides opportunities for all New York State students who qualify through portfolio reviews to receive the highest level of training and instruction.

Students work in small groups and in one-on-one sessions with professionals and with other students of similar ability. NYSSSA’s goal is clear: to provide inten-sive, preprofessional training programs for New York State’s most gifted and motivat-ed young artists, those who are consider-ing careers in the arts. The schools provide

intensive training in an environment where students experience the rigorous discipline of the daily life of a professional artist.

This school is specifi cally designed to emphasize art experiences that cannot normally be undertaken during a 45-min-ute school period and allows gifted high school students from all over New York State to experience life as a working art-ist. Students work in the studio at SUNY Brockport as well as in the community with drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, fi gure, and inter-disciplinary arts under the direction of noted exhibiting artist educators.

Student artwork from the NYSSSA School of Visual Arts is currently being exhibited on Main Street, in the Welcome Center, and in the Brockport Village Hall.

A breakfast was held June 12 for students recognized for Character Counts and Student of the Month programs.

This new course at RCS focuses on using a new and popular robotics kit to de-sign a robot to meet a functional objective. Students will design, build and program the robot to achieve the desired function. Throughout this process, students will learn about gears, motors, and mecha-nisms as well as programming languages, teamwork, planning, and communication.

Open house for the middle school will be held in August this year as a way for parents and students to meet their teachers at the same time and hear what the classroom expecta-tions are for a successful year. Open house for grades 5 and 6 will be held from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Au-gust 29th, in the elementary school, and for grades 7 and 8 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30th, in the high school. Letters will be sent home as a reminder. We hope to see you there.

Savoring Success

You may already be aware that the Randolph area has a local food pantry, the Randolph Community Cupboard, which can supply food items in times of need. Because the Cupboard receives some USDA government com-modities and can purchase other available food supplies from the Food Bank of Western New York, there are income eligibility guidelines similar to those for the free and reduced school lunch program.

However, food supplies can also be given out for emergency situations due to extended illness, fi re, an accident, temporary unemployment, unusual medi-cal expenses, or a change in the family structure and income. Especially dur-ing school vacations or holidays, family food needs can increase. To obtain help, please contact Louise Boutwell at 358-4848 or Shirley Towers at 358-6811.

POSTAL PATRON LOCAL

By Jack Berger Randolph Central School Board ended its fi nal fi scal

meeting of the year remembering their faithful 15-year member, Mary Myers, who offi cially left the board July 1 because of her loss in the annual school board election on May 16.

Ms. Myers came on the Board in 1991 and has been a driving force ever since with her personal interest in district constituents that have made her a qualifi ed mover and shak-er in any endeavor she chose. She has not only represented the Randolph Central School at the local level, but also has made Randolph a name to be heard during her tenure as a member on the New York State School Boards Association, making numerous trips to Albany with other school districts to learn more about state mandating and rural county school budget concerns.

“I will miss Mary,” said Sandra Craft, School Superin-tendent, adding that “Mary’s knowledge of school opera-tion has made the job easier for me and the school staff.”

Randolph Central School provides bus transportation of children to and from school. The safety of children is always a major concern. Please do not make changes to your child’s drop off location throughout the school year. Send one schedule to the offi ce for the entire year that may be recorded and used as a refer-ence during an emergency or staff change.
