It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to the members of the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA) Canada Branch Among Canadarsquos greatest assets is our rich cultural diversity As a nation we have successfully forged a cohesive pluralistic society thanks to the efforts of our diverse communities This occasion offers an ideal opportunity to celebrate the many contributions Canadians who can trace their roots to the province of Rajasthan India have made to our countryrsquos growth and development I would like to commend everyone associated with RANA Canada for setting an example for new generations of Canadians who are proud of their heritage but look forward to building a good life in their adopted country Please accept my best wishes for every success in your future endeavours

Former Indian President Kalam when asked what we Indians should do to make our mother country proud advised us to give our best to the country where we live it will make both Canada and India proud of the Indians living in Canada

Every member of RANA gave his or her best to RANA and that is why today we are a proud community in Canada as well as in India where people mention our name with pride The commitment devotion and tireless effort of our members to achieve the best either when performing for RANA events or organizing an event has earned a rightful place for us not only in Indo-Canadian community but in main stream of Canadamdashpolitical or social

Today RANA is known as an organization which is aware of its responsibilities towards the community and the country which is alert towards the danger looming over our society which is ready to take a stand against elements who wish to harm the cohesive fabric of Indo-Canadian Community by breeding hatred terror and militancy

The achievements of the last year and a half would not have been possible without the direction given by our patrons at the early stage of the organization without the enthusiasm of our new members youth and ladies of RANA

During this period we were invited to the Prime Ministerrsquos economic round table we sponsored National Diwali at Ottawa and the Ramleela performed by our members during Diwali celebrations earned kudos from religious literary and political leaders of our society The performances of our youth always left audience awestruck and we receive numerous requests every month for a Rajasthani cultural programme by our youth from various organizations and societies in the GTA Our annual picnic was talked about for months and we were flooded with requests for invite for the 2011 picnic

As well our first attempt to publish our magazine got an overwhelming response from community

Our delegation of nearly a hundred delegates to Rajasthani International Convention prompted the Chief Minister of Rajasthan to suggest that the next convention should be hosted by us in Canada

I have a word for those who usually ask ldquoWhat is there for us if we become a member of RANArdquo This reminds me of the famous words of President John F Kennedy

ldquoAnd so my fellow Americans ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your countryrdquo

Let me put it this way for our community ask not what the community including RANA can do for you ask what you can do for your community and RANA

Mark Twain the famous writer once said - ldquoIndia is the cradle of the human race the birthplace of human speech the mother of history the grandmother of legend and the great grandmother of tradition Our most valuable and most constructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India onlyrdquo This is very true With the determination of keeping this great grandmother of tradition alive in our mind body and soul we have once again combined the best of our efforts to publish the secondmdashmuch awaitedmdashissue of RANArsquos magazine The overwhelming response we received for our first ever issue last year is still fresh in our minds Thank you so much for appreciating it and embracing it with an open heart

Our magazine was distributed not only in our community our city and in our country but all over the world through different means and media It was our proud privilege to present it to Dr Abdul Kalam the former President of India during his visit here in Canada Our magazine the mirror of RANA Canada was well received at the International Convention last summer in New York USA It was also graciously presented to all the dignitaries includ-ing the Honourable Chief Minster of Rajasthan Mr Ashok Gehlot and his entire delegation from Rajasthan It has also reached out to almost all prominent leaders of Canada including the Honourable Prime Minister Mr Stephen Harper

With the best wishes of all our well-wishers we have once again put together our efforts to bring out this issue consisting of some innovative contents while still protecting the original flavour of Rajasthan We can still enjoy the smell of our soil become enchanted with its bright colours explore the mystic of Rajasthan learn new facts and enjoy the taste of our traditional food

In this issue as you will notice we have tried to motivate our very young generation to par-ticipate and engage themselves in RANA activities as they are the ones who are going to carry forward our tradition and rich culture in future

As you will discover here in the past year RANA has reached new heights by leaps and bound It will not be wrong to say that RANA works towards a dream with five Drsquos- Direction Dedication Determination Discipline and Deadlines- and turns that dream into a reality each time

Nurturing Rajasthan Taking a lead from RANA (USA) four years back a few illustrious Indo-Canadians of Rajasthani origin formed RANA (Canada) RANA (Canada) was to be a driving force to promote propagate and preserve the incredibly rich Rajasthani culture heritage traditions and values and simultaneously instill these in the present and future generations of Indo-Canadian-Rajasthanis

RANA (Canada) is an incorporated not-for-profit organization in the Province of Ontario providing a dedicated platform to create a strong sense of community among Indo-Canadians of Rajasthani descent It tirelessly augments Canadarsquos strength and ability for embracing every culture in creating an inclusive dynamic global society proud of its various languages histories ancestries and cultures ldquoThe present has a responsibility towards the past and the future it has to preserve the culture heritage and val-ues of the past and pass it on to the futurerdquo This Eternal Pearl of Divine Wisdom spelled by Lord Shri Krishna as transcribed in Great Indian Epic Mahabharata forms the central core of RANArsquos Philosophy of Action and all its endeavors and efforts are inspired and driven with this somber touch and sense With above axiom as its touch-stone RANA (Canada) is vibrantly and dynamically moving forward towards its tryst to meet its objectives under the visionary stewardship of its energetic and infectiously enthusiastic President Yogesh K Sharma along with dedicated team of Patrons Directors Conveners and Members

The year of 2010 was full of activities community service entertainment charities and networking events The year began with two events celebrating the Republic Day of India RANA organized Republic Day celebrations at the Vedic Culture Centre in Markham on January 23 2010 in association with Patanjali Yogpeeth Arya Samaj and Agarwals Based in Canada The event was very well attended and Rajendra Pahuja as well as Ravina Maheshwari did a com-mendable job as event coordinators Our youth and ladies also performed at the Pearson Convention Centre during Indiarsquos Republic Day Celebrations organized by Panorama India on January 31 2010

Holi the festival of colours organized by Dharam Jain and Mahesh Gupta at the Hindu Sabha Temple on February 28 2010 filled all RANA members with pride as more than 1100 community members joined RANA families in the celebrations while visiting the Temple The basement of the Temple was covered in Holi colours complimented by Thandai (a typical Rajasthani drink) and lunch

How could our ladies forget the colourful melas (fare) of Gangaur and Teej Taruna Poddar and Gauri Goel not only sponsored but also organized an event at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Mississauga which will always be remembered for the authentic creation of Gangaur Puja and celebration by ladies of RANA on March 27 2010 In its endeavour to join mainstream activities RANA organized community service events at Scott Mission in downtown Toronto on May 16 and October 2 2010 This mainstream community service activity has now become a permanent feature in RANArsquos annual calendar Nidhi Jethoo vice-president of community services deserves all the credit for organizing this commu-nity service event

The most anticipating event of the year the Rajasthan International Convention was organized by RANA (USA) and held from July 2 to July 5 2010 in Long Island New York We made a great impact at this convention with nearly 100 attendees representing RANA (Canada) The cultural performances by our youth received the maximum applause at the convention It was definitely an outstanding performance by Maneesha Gupta Shreya Tekriwal Manogya Tekri-wal Anant Vijay Apaar Vijay Harsh Heda and Yash Heda Ashok Gehlot Chief Minister of Rajasthan was so im-pressed by participation of Canadian delegates at this convention that he suggested the possibility of holding the next convention in Canada should be fully explored The CM of Rajasthan was very kind to agree for an exclusive meeting with our Board

RANArsquos Choorma Dal Baati Picnic organized by Dilip Sharma and Usha Shah was held at the Kelso Conservation

Area on July 18 2010 Exceeding expectations of all more than 350 members and their guests relished the typical Rajasthani cuisine which was served in a traditional manner (in thalis) We are still receiving messages from our friends who missed this picnic that we should not forget to invite them to the picnic in 2011

Panorama India in association with Consul General of India organized the India Day Parade at YongeDundas Square on August 14 2010 and RANA (Canada) was one of the major participants at the event Our float depicting Mira Bai was very well appreciated Akanksha Paliwal (Mira Bai) was photographed by almost all the Torontonians watching the parade The cultural performances of Ekta Mantri Shalini Vyas Manogya Tekriwal and Maneesha Gupta made such an impact on leaders of other community organizations that we now receive numerous requests for performances of our youth at various events being organized in the GTA RANA (Canada) also participated at Indiarsquos Independence Day celebration in Markham on August 15 2010 and our youth team once again stole the show by their performances

Our joint secretary Anu Jain organized a Welcome Night for our new members on September 25 2010 at the RANA office New members are the lifeline of any organization and we took this opportunity to appreciate their membership and involvement in our RANA community It was a great evening full of poetry jokes ideas and assurance of RANArsquos bright future along with a delicious dinner

Rajasthan Foundation Night was held on October 9 2010 at the Versailles Convention Centre in Mississauga A night showcasing Canadarsquos diversity through performances with Mrs Preeti Saran the Consul General of India as our chief guest at our maiden effort for organizing a fundraiser will always be remembered as an evening which was full of en-tertainment Rajni Tekriwal vice-president of fundraising did a tremendous jobmdashcongratulations to full team of Rajni Tekriwal The performances which were all professional and very entertaining drew applause time and again from the entire audience including our chief guest and other dignitaries which included Pankaj Mehra of Scotiabank and Sunil Tondon of State Bank of India

Diwali the festival of lights was held on November 13 2010 at Sagan Banquet Hall What Prerna Khandelwal Anamika Vaish and their team did to present Ramleela cannot be described in words A gathering of more than 500 sat mesmerized during the whole performance Sujata Deengar a friend of RANArsquos by virtue of her contribution as writer and director of Ramleela qualifies to be a member of RANA The performance of each and everyone participating in Ramleela was simply outstanding Those who sat spell-bound included Provincial Leader of Opposition Tim Hudak Parliamentary Secretary to Foreign Minister Deepak Obhrai Ruby Dhalla MP Amrit Mangat MPP and HOC Ms D Charandasi The curtains of Ramleela closed the curtain of our activities o for the year 2010

Year 2011 began with the celebration of Indiarsquos Republic Day at the Vedic Culture Centre on January 30 2011 This year Sanatan Mandir joined the team of organizers of RANA Canada Patanjali Yogpeeth ABC and Arya Samaj RANA also participated in Republic Day celebration organized by Panorama India at the Pearson Convention Centre on Janu-ary 29 2011

Our director Pinki Jajoo who is also the chair of the Indian association in St Johnrsquos Newfoundland organized Republic Day Celebration in the city which was attended by Mayor

Our children - our future were painting to prove that RANA and Canadarsquos future is very bright and colourful The creativity and imagination reflected in the paintings at childrenrsquos painting competition organized at RANA office on February 5 2011was well appreciated Honourable Julian Fantino gave away the prizes to winners and all participants as our chief guest

Holi 2011 was organized at the Bharat Mata Mandir The coordinators of the event Jayshree Vyas and Saran Ghai made it an event which will always be remembered for rustic music and dance with which Holi is traditionally celebrated in Rajasthan Ruby Dhalla MP Kuldip Kullar MPP and Priti Lamba PC candidate for MP could not escape from the colours of Holi

We were back at Scott Mission to serve homeless on May 7 2011 Since its inception RANA (Canada) has worked tirelessly towards achieving its missions and to crystallizing its ever-expanding visionhellipthere is more to comehellipmore to achievehellip and more to nurture

frac12 cup Ginger paste 2-3 green chillies chopped 1 frac12 cup chopped Onion

1 cup Peas Salt to taste 1 tsp Jeera

1 tsp Red chilli powder frac12 tsp Garam Masala 2 tsp Coriander powder

3 cups fresh Haldi (Peeled and grated)

Cooking MethodHeat ghee in a non stick pan Add Onions Ginger and Garlic paste Sauteacute till it is golden brown Add grated Haldi and sauteacute for another 15 minutes Add yogurt and all the spices and keep stirring till it comes to a boil or till the oil separates Now add peas Simmer the heat and stir occasionally It should not stick to the pan It takes at least one hour to cook it nicely If you find that the gravy is less add some milk to it Serve hot with Chappatis or Bajra ki roti

Ingredients For Gattas Salt to taste 12 tsp red chilli powder 12 tsp cumin seeds1 cup bengal gram flour (besan) 2 tblsp yogurt Gheeoil to deep fry 1 tblsp mint leaves chopped A pinch soda bi carbonate 12 tsp turmeric powder12 tsp ginger chopped

Alitalia - Toronto to Cyprus Business Class $39Alitalia Airlines is a carrier out of Italy that made a slight mistake on its website in 2006 regarding a fare from Toronto to Cyprus The fare advertised was $39 ndash in Business class It was supposed to be $3900 The rate was posted on a travel website and the rush was on As many as 2000 tickets were sold for this price While Alitalia initially tried to cancel all the tickets purchased for the wrong price they eventually decided to honor the mistaken fares If all 2000 people actually used their tickets it adds up to a $772 million loss to the airline

Forts of Rajasthan Compiled by DrRenuka RaviJaisalmer Fort

Built in 1156 by King Rawal Jaisal Jaisalmer Fort dominates the countryside in the far northwestern corner of Rajasthan near the border of India and Pakistan The magnificent complex also known as Sonar Kila (Golden Fort) for its gleaming golden sandstone walls and buildings flourished on the eastndashwest caravan route connecting India and Central Asia to the Middle East and North Africa Merchants built elaborately designed Havelis among the numerous palaces temples bazaars and residences inside the walls of the complex The superb architecture within the fort was protected by double fortification walls and circular bastions key physical components used for defense and battle Additional features of the fort include a pitching wall to hold the clay soil of the hill in place a toe wall and the Mori a pathway between the inner and outer fortification walls that allowed soldiers and horses to move throughout the structure in times of war

About a quarter of cityrsquos population live in the fort of Rajasthan At one point of time the entire population of Jaisalmer of Rajasthan used to live within the fort

The perfect time to visit the golden city is during the Desert Festival of Rajasthan held in January - February every year when the city reverberates to the sound of melodious tunes and rhythms folk dances exciting competitions and contests

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort in India and the grandest in the state of Rajasthan The fort plainly known as Chittor was the capital of Mewar and is today situated several kilometres by road south of Bhilwara It was ruled initially by and later by Sisodias the Suryavanshi clans of Chattari Rajputs from 7th century until it was finally abandoned in 1568 after the siege by Emperor Akbar in 1567 It sprawls majestically over a hill 180 m (5906 ft) in height spread over an area of 280 ha (6919 acres) above the plains of the valley drained by the Berach River The fort precinct with an evocative history is studded with a series of historical palaces gates temples and two prominent commemoration towers These monumental ruins have inspired the imagination of tourists and writers for centuries

The fort was sacked three times between 15th and 16th centuries in 1303 Allauddin Khilji defeated Rana Ratan Singh in 1535 Bahadur Shah the Sultan of Gujarat defeated Bikramjeet Singh and in 1567 Emperor Akbar defeated Maharana

Udai Singh II who left the fort and founded Udaipur Each time the men fought bravely rushing out of the fort walls charging the enemy but lost every time Following these defeats Jauhar was committed thrice by more than 13000 la-dies and children of the Rajput heroes who laid their lives in battles at Chittorgarh Fort first lead by Rani Padmini wife of Rana Rattan Singh who was killed in the battle in 1303 and later by Rani Karnavati in 1537 AD

Thus the fort represents the quintessence of tribute to the nationalism courage medieval chivalry and sacrifice exhibited by the Mewar rulers of Sisodia and their kinsmen women and children between the 7th century and 16th century

Dear Fellow Readers Namaste Irsquom 11 years old Sonia Sharma and Irsquom going to tell you about some of the amazing things I know about our incredible India Before I begin I would just like to ask a simple question Have you ever been to India If you havenrsquot you might as well start packing your bags after yoursquove heard what Irsquove like to say Letrsquos start with one of my most memorable memories When I was about 5 years old my family and I went to India I was just sitting in the car with some of my older cousins eating a banana All of the sudden a monkey swept down jumped through the window and took the banana right out of my hands I had a lot of explaining to do that day

Anyway letrsquos head towards our next topic Tourist Attractions India has many tourist attractions including the Taj Mahal temples and rivers I think that I am very lucky because I was able to see many of Indiarsquos amazing tourist attractions I have seen the Taj Mahal Ganga River Vrindavan and more I have also been to many of Indiarsquos states and territories More than I can count Some of the states that I have visited the most include New Delhi Haridwar and Jaipur India has 28 states and 7 territories

Our next topic is interesting facts India has many interesting facts which some you might know and some you might not So letrsquos begin Did you know that India contains 16 of the worldrsquos population Or that it contains 24 of the worldrsquos land India is in the continent Asia and the capital is New Delhi India is the 7th largest country in area India also has the most popular democracy India has a lot of wild life and protected habitats The population is 115 billion Now for the topic wersquove all been waiting for Food From all what I know Indian food is just amazing In such a way that I canrsquot describe In fact India is known for its many spices and fabulous food Because both my parents are from India my taste buds get to visit India all the time Just through the food Some of my favourite Indian foods are Rajma Butter Chicken Aloo Parantha and Gol Gappe My favourite sweets are Halwa Gulab Jamun Jalebi and Soan Papdi

India is the worldrsquos second largest producer of food Sadly our time ends here but I do hope that everyone enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it Before I go I would just like to say next time you visit India make sure your banana stays in your hands

Kids Corner Why Fish Live In Water

Once upon a time in the great jungle of Siradan created by the god Zeus lived his most cared animals The leader of the cheetahs was Neelberg The leader of the giraffes was Gerry The leader for the hippos was Hilda The leader of the zebrarsquos was Zelda The leader for the fish was Frenzy

The fish looked so different that time They had no fins and they stood up like humans do They were a lot bigger that time and were able to talk Their face was just like how it is today but it was round At first every one lived happily in the jungle without any problems but soon enough the jungle of Siradan soon be-came over populated with so many animals The problem was that the bigger animals were scaring the small animals Now the fish clan got very scared about this since they were the weakest one of them all So they had their clan meet-ing where they discussed about the issue

At the meeting Frenzy said ldquoPeople of the fish clan there is no need to worry because we will go to warrdquo

ldquoBut this is only until we feel we can survive ldquoIf we canrsquot then we will have to talk to god Zeusrdquo he said

The war had started and was getting big The giraffes and cheetahs had actually teamed up to defeat the other clans so they could keep all of the land to themselves When the zebras hippos and fish clan came to know about this they de-cided to team up to The next morning they attacked each other The war lasted till evening with the cheetahs and giraffes winning Frenzy had figured out that there was no chance of surviving He knew he had to talk to Zeus about this matter

ldquoO great God help us our whole generations are in dangerrdquo pleaded FrenzyldquoTell me the problem Frenzyrdquo Zeus saidldquoWell the problem is in the jungle of Siradan A war has broken out and our clan is in dangerrdquo Frenzy told Zeus sadly ldquoWe need a new place to liverdquo

Zeus thought for a minute and being the nice god he is he told them about the lake of Sinocon located behind the beautiful mountains of Salvation Frenzy thought for a second and talked to the other fish that came with him

ldquoYes what you are saying is correct but I have a concernrdquo Frenzy saidldquoWhat is it Frenzyrdquo Tell merdquo asked Zeus rubbing through his beardldquoLord how will we breathe in the water We are land animals and for us living in the water is impossiblerdquo Frenzy questioned

ldquoDonrsquot worry Frenzy everything is under controlrdquo Zeus said ldquoI will give you fish the power to breath underwaterrdquoldquoBut you will not be able to breathe on land actually you will never be able to come on landrdquo said Zeus pointing at them

That really disappointed them but now they had no other choice but to do what Zeus had said

ldquoFor you to breathe in water I will give you finsrdquo he explained ldquoThey will let you breathe in the waterrdquo

God gave them the fins and they went to the lake of Sinocon They lived happily ever after there even though they might have missed land

Former Indian President Kalam when asked what we Indians should do to make our mother country proud advised us to give our best to the country where we live it will make both Canada and India proud of the Indians living in Canada

Every member of RANA gave his or her best to RANA and that is why today we are a proud community in Canada as well as in India where people mention our name with pride The commitment devotion and tireless effort of our members to achieve the best either when performing for RANA events or organizing an event has earned a rightful place for us not only in Indo-Canadian community but in main stream of Canadamdashpolitical or social

Today RANA is known as an organization which is aware of its responsibilities towards the community and the country which is alert towards the danger looming over our society which is ready to take a stand against elements who wish to harm the cohesive fabric of Indo-Canadian Community by breeding hatred terror and militancy

The achievements of the last year and a half would not have been possible without the direction given by our patrons at the early stage of the organization without the enthusiasm of our new members youth and ladies of RANA

During this period we were invited to the Prime Ministerrsquos economic round table we sponsored National Diwali at Ottawa and the Ramleela performed by our members during Diwali celebrations earned kudos from religious literary and political leaders of our society The performances of our youth always left audience awestruck and we receive numerous requests every month for a Rajasthani cultural programme by our youth from various organizations and societies in the GTA Our annual picnic was talked about for months and we were flooded with requests for invite for the 2011 picnic

As well our first attempt to publish our magazine got an overwhelming response from community

Our delegation of nearly a hundred delegates to Rajasthani International Convention prompted the Chief Minister of Rajasthan to suggest that the next convention should be hosted by us in Canada

I have a word for those who usually ask ldquoWhat is there for us if we become a member of RANArdquo This reminds me of the famous words of President John F Kennedy

ldquoAnd so my fellow Americans ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your countryrdquo

Let me put it this way for our community ask not what the community including RANA can do for you ask what you can do for your community and RANA
