Mobile network operators can’t afford to go it

alone—at least when it comes to their future network

investment. 5G will require large numbers of base

stations and small cells to deliver better connectivity,

which could increase operators’ network investments

by up to 60 percent if they try to proceed alone,

according to McKinsey.

In recent years, operators have started working with

their competitors to reduce the total cost of ownership

through active sharing of their network infrastructure.

Active sharing goes beyond the sharing of passive

equipment (e.g., masts) to sharing of network elements

(e.g., spectrum, processing resources). This will be

especially important for 5G, as sharing network

equipment will deliver broader, more cost-effective

coverage.

One of the most commonly shared assets is the radio

access network (RAN), and for good reason—active

radio elements can account for up to 60 percent of

initial network investment. The addition of more 5G

base stations could increase the proportion of network

costs attributed to the RAN.

RAN Sharing allows operators to connect their

customers’ devices using the same RAN equipment,

while keeping core networks separate. To minimize the

cost of 5G network deployment while expanding their

coverage cost-effectively, operators will need to share

RAN to better manage the cost.

According to McKinsey, network sharing techniques

like RAN sharing have been able to reduce TCO by up

to 30 percent—and also present a massive revenue

opportunity for operators willing to share

their networks.

The CSG RAN Sharing Monetization solution helps

mobile operators maximize the return on their network

investments, and earn incremental revenue by

automating the revenue management and assurance

process. CSG RAN Sharing Monetization is an end-to-

end solution, from the collection of EDRs through the

integration with an ERP.

The solution works in either direction, whether you

are the operator leasing the RAN network, or utilizing

a partner’s RAN network. By automating the RAN

sharing process with other partners, operators can:

Save on capex and opex required for RAN

equipment

Earn revenue from existing network

investments

HOW IT WORKS

CSG RAN Sharing Monetization mediates, settles and

reconciles usage data to ensure operators receive

what they are owed for usage of their RAN. The

solution processes EDR for partner billing and enables

the operator to corroborate EDR feeds against RAN

counter data and manage any disputes that arise.

Here’s how it works:

The CSG RAN Sharing Monetization solution

collects and mediates EDRs received from the

partner who is sharing the network

To avoid relying entirely on usage data

provided by the partner, the solution also

collects usage from the operator’s own

RAN counters

If there are disputes, RAN counters are used

for reconciliation and to support revenue

assurance

If there are no disputes, the mediated EDR files

are rated and invoices are generated for the

partner operator

SOLUTION COMPONENTS

The CSG RAN Sharing Monetization Solution

integrates four components to help operators manage

their RAN sharing agreements. The solution can

support different sharing models such as MVNOs,

National Roaming, multiple operator RAN (MORAN),

and Multiple Operator Core Network (MOCN).

CSG Billing Mediation supports a multitude of usage

records, like RAN counters, and helps operators

protect revenue on their networks. The component

provides the following functionality:

Collection of multiple streams of usage data

from the partner network (e.g. voice, VoLTE,

data, SMS, MMS and USSD usage)

Check for duplicate records

Aggregation of usage events from the partner

network

Formatting events for billing

Collection of usage events from the operator’s

RAN to be used for revenue assurance

CSG National Settlement offers volume-based

and enhanced rating features and country-specific

reference data loaders. The component provides the

following functionality:

Management of the partnership agreement

Definition of the products required by the RAN

sharing agreement

Rating of aggregated events and calculation of

related charges

Generation of feed of rated events to support

dispute reconciliation management

CSG Dispute and Reconciliation Management

provides tools to handle the comparison, proposal

and dispute process. The component provides the

following functionality:

Reconciliation of aggregated RAN usage with

usage records collected from the partner’s

network. The reconciliation is done for specif ic

time intervals to highlight gaps representing

missing traff ic

Definition of revenue assurance rules, so that

differences above configurable thresholds will

automatically raise a dispute case
