ER Flyers Become Cinderellas in Dobson

THE RAMSEUR REVIEW - SEPTEMBER 2010

New Fire Dept HiresBegin Testing Hydrants

(Top Left: The team poses for a victory shot. Top Right: Defense digging down.Bottom Right: LeighAnn Ward with the game ball and Megan Ridder with the MVP trophy. )

Most little girls like to pretend they areDisney princesses; but a group ofColeridge gals put on their glass cleatsand became the Cinderella story of theIFA Back To School Blast in Dobson, NC.The Eastern Randolph Flyers, sponsoredmainly by Air Associates Inc. and ByrdsBP, is an 8 year old and under traveling

softball squad in their first year of play.Coached by Derrick Ridder, the team hadcompeted in 2 pervious tournaments thissummer but had come up winless in both.It was tough because the girls had nowins to pump them up recalled FlyerCoach Derrick Ridder, but they keptworking hard!. So they geared up and onthe weekend of August 28th & 29th laced

up for their first game against the favoredGreensboro Batting Center and shockedthem in the opening game - sending themto the losers bracket. In typical movie-likefashion, both teams battled through thefield and met again in the tournament final.

Everyone thought we were a fluke.Ridder laughed, but they had anotherthing coming. After getting out to a slowstart, the GBC had the Flyers down 3-0within the first 3 innings. The Flyers thenclamped down on defense and got theirbatts going, scoring a run both the 4th and5th innings. They continued theirdefensive stranglehold as GBCs last atbatt came and went with no runs scored;setting the stage the Flyers last chance.

Down 3-2, the Greensboro Batting Center retiredtwo of the Flyers batters, leaving Sydney Claytonon base with one out left. Tournament MVP MeganRidder then kept hopes alive when her RBI hitdrove in Clayton and bringing them even withGBC. With the momentum now solidly in theFlyers corner, Sierra Hubbard finished the job with

another RBI, driving Ridder in for the go-aheadrun and sealing the epic win for The Flyers.

Nobody took us seriously because we werewinless Coach Ridder told us, but once thosegirls got a taste of victory, they couldnt getenough. They just exploded! It was amazing. Thecomeback kids arent just sitting back andenjoying their victory. With the help of AssistantCoaches Scott Leonard, Bill Ward, and Jake

Helms (who Ridder praises for their help), theyplan to continue tournament play. We usually playevery 3 weeks in 8 and under tournaments, andwe plan to move them up to 10 and understarting in mid-November because theyve gottenso good. We want to continue to push them to getbetter. The team picture and championship trophyis on display at Coleridge Elementary School. Weas a community should join with their proud coachand parents in praising them for their hard work

and never give up attitude. Go Flyers!!

Recently, the Town of Ramseur filled their 2alloted full-time firefighter positions that came witha recent government grant. Returning Ramseur

fighter Jason Coleman, along with Ryan Husband, are beginning their duties by performing a neededflow test of the towns hydrants. You may seethem around town, letting water cycle through thehydrants. Coleman informed me that this has a 2fold purpose. We get to monitor how manygallons per minute the hydrants put out, so thatwell know what we are working with when itcomes time to use them in a firefighting situation. It also is good to clear out the water lines before

winter gets here. And unfortunate side effect ofthis testing may be that the dormant andsometimes discolored portions of the water supplycould show up in residential and commercial lines. But before you flood the town with phone calls(pun very much intended), the FD offers a simplesolution. Just let it run its course Colemanadvised, run your faucet or go turn on an outsidespicket until the water clears up. There is no

cause to worry, none of the water is harmful.

THE RAMSEUR REVIEW - SEPTEMBER 2010

Eastern Randolph HS Goes Back To School With A BuzzWether you are lamenting the loss of thecarefree days of summer or excited aboutthe new beginnings on the horizon; youcant deny the buzz in the air each year as

school starts a new session in the fall. The2010-2011 school year has begun and withit brings a new face to the Wildcat frontoffice. Enter Principal Stephanie Bridges, the first-year SERMS transplant that spoketo us recently on her excitement for hernew school and what she expects for thenew schools year.

This year could not have startedup any better in my opinion Bridgesexclaimed to me on the phone, it was asweet start. I really cant complain at all.She also remarked on how she believesthis may be one of the most mature, well -

behaved, and promising student bodiesthat she has encountered in her teachingcareer. One of the things that reallyexcited me was the new Student Section

at our first football game. Run by theStudent Activities Liaison, the all-studentcheering section is hoping to expand theirnumbers and energy at each game. Theywork with the principal to add excitementand spirit to the already lively andpromising football program of CoachBaxter. Ive already had parents complainto me about how loud and aggravatingthey were at our first game. Bridges

laughed, You couldnt have given me abetter compliment! Bridges hopes that thecommunity will start coming back to theWildcat games and see it as a gatheringplace where everyone can unify and rally

around a common excitement and goal.

Bridges has a busy fall and a lot tolook forward to. Along with the WildcatClassic band competition on October 16th,

she also mentioned the 9/11 memorialservice on the morning September 10th,and the rare opportunities the ER studentshave with Doug Collins refreshed class onfilm development and digital photographyor Ranolph Countys only remaining danceprogram taught by Britt Allen. As she looksforward to the new year and what successit may bring to the Wildcats, we lookforward to covering them and bringing it toyou each month! (Editors Note: No otherlocal school could be reached for commenton the new year; but we look forward tocovering them as well!)

Wildcat Classic Set For Oct 16th

Blow out your spit-valves and polish yourbrass, because the spirit of high schoolmarching band is headed to our area. Thecompetition was in it's 8th year back in2001, the rained out affair marked the last

time Eastern has hosted the event. Furthermore, there hasn't been aformal marching band competition held inthe entire county in almost 10 years, andthis year we break that streak two-fold. Inaddition to this competition, ProvidenceGrove HS is hosting one for the very firsttime on September 25th. This publication

plans on visiting the Wildcats as therehearse and prepare for the big day.Band Director Josh Cvijanovic is hopingthey can make this a big community event. We have bands of all sizes coming fromacross North Carolina, and with tickets at$6 for adults, it's a great way not only tosupport our local student musicians, but afun way to spend a Saturday outside withthe family watching these terrific kids

compete. They also have a program thatthey are selling ads for if any businessowners are interesting in partnering up.With both the Wildcat Classic and the FallFestival happening the same day - it maybe an uphill battle. We encourage thecommunity to do their best to support andenjoy both activities. Oh, and Go Wildcats!

REVIEW OF NC STEP CONCERT & MEETING

Ramseurs NC STEP efforts are off to a great start, and I wanted to pass alongsome information to follow up on last Saturdays kickoff event and the meeting whichwas held on Tuesday evening.

The kickoff event went very well and was attended by roughly 400. We appreciatethe efforts of those who volunteered to make this event a success. Matt Davis, anemployee of CauseKeepers and a member of our NC STEP team, has put togethera short video from the kickoff which I think youll find both interesting andinformative. Check it out (at RamseurReview.org) and feel free to share the link withothers. Well also be sure to provide a link from the Towns website in the nearfuture. The Ramseur Reviewalso included an article about the kickoff in the issuewhich was delivered to various locations around Town (in August).

Thanks to those who participated in Tuesday evenings meeting. I was excited tosee many new faces among the nearly forty who turned out. If you didnt have theopportunity to join us, Chips article in Wednesdays Courier-Tribune provided agreat overview of the meeting content.

Finally, Randolph Community College has extended an invitation to our NC STEPLeadership Team to host a breakfast meeting at which Dr. Shackleford can presentsome of the opportunities afforded by the college. I think this would be veryinformative, and believe that this would be a great opportunity to further develop apositive relationship between Ramseur and RCC. I will need your feedback before Irespond to Dr. Shacklefords invitation, so please let me know as soon as possible ifyour schedule would generally permit you to attend such a meeting if announced

with sufficient advance notice. You may either respond to this email, or give me acall at 824-8530. The NC STEPs next meeting will be Tuesday Sept. 21st.

ASHEBOROA female lion was euthanized atthe North Carolina Zoo Friday morning afterveterinarians determined that mammary cancerhad spread to the point that she would notrecover.

The 12-year-old female had been at the N.C Zoosince 2002 after being transferred from the

The cancer had metastasized to the lungs andshe was suffering, DeVoe said. There wasnothing we could do for her.

The stories, opinions, and views that make us who we are

2010 ACC Football Preview(by Ramseur Review Columnist Brett Walden)After a long, hot summer, its finally time for football again. Here are

some predictions for the upcoming season.

Starting with the Atlantic Division, with Boston College. David

Shinskie, will remain the starting Quarterback for the Eagles and with

their soft non-conference schedule this season, they should be able

to win six games, and possibly get a lower tier bowl invite. Clemson is one of my surprises this year. Most folks think

they will repeat the successes of last year. I think the expectations

are entirely too high for this team. The Tigers may make me eat

some crow, but for now, without CJ Spiller in the backfield, I see an

inconsistent offense, even with Kyle Parkers return. I think Clemson

loses some games they shouldnt and win some they shouldnt. I

think they finish 6-6, after a Senior day loss to hated rival South

    Carolina.

Florida State will have a fabulous year, and win the ACC

Championship, and beat their long time rival Miami in the

Championship game. This will be Jimbo Fishers first year as head

coach after being promoted from Offensive Coordinator. This will be

a high octane offense, and last years horrible defense should be

improved with new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops. Any

improvement at all in this defense should result in a great season

    with lots of wins.

Ralph Friedgen is certainly on the hot seat after last seasons

2-10 campaign in College Park. Maryland will be better this year, but

not by much, I think they scratch and claw their way to six wins, and

NC States Tom Obrien in my opinion is on the hot seat too. He needs at

least seven wins in some way, shape or form to be back in 2011. He wont

get it; the Wolfpack will be wildly inconsistent this season and finish 4-8 with

only 2 conference wins. The only reason Obrien is still the coach, is he has

found a way to beat North Carolina three times in a row. It stops this year in

Chapel Hill There will be a new coach in Raleigh in 2011. Another reason,

Obrien will be canned after this season is his inability to recruit the state of

North Carolina. UNC, Duke, East Carolina, and even Wake Forest have

out-recruited Obrien inside the state for the next recruiting class.

After this year, Jim Grobe will wish he had actually taken the job at

Arkansas a few years ago, where there is more talent and while his stick

was up as a coach. He had a decent run and even took Wake Forest to the

Orange Bowl a few years back, but they havent been very good since.

The Coastal division is going to be much tougher to predict because

of the Academic Infractions uncovered at UNC. If the Tar Heels are at

100%, they could potentially compete for a Coastal Championship and a

shot at the ACC crown. However, my sources close to the program in

Chapel Hill say between 6 and 12 significant players could be out, mostly on

the defensive side of the ball, which would have been the Tar Heels

strength this year. So for now, Ive had to lower my

expectation for North Carolina because of the

possibil ity of players being suspended for part or all of

    the season.

Duke will be about the same as last year.

With Thad Lewis graduation, Sean Renfree will have to

step in at Quarterback. He is talented, but

inexperienced. Dukes defense should be better, and I

think Coach Cutclifes Blue Devils will compete, but

most weeks, will just be out classed on the field

resulting in a typical year for Duke football.

Georgia Tech will definitely miss Jonathan

Dwyer in the backfield. I think the rest of the ACC

knocks Paul Johnson and his Yellow Jackets down a few

notches in the pecking order this year, I think they win

7 regular season games, and get into a decent bowl

game. The long term problem at Georgia Tech in my

opinion is recruiting. Paul Johnson has been winning

with Chan Gaileys athletic recruits. But once these

guys leave, its going to be tough to get superior

athletes to go to Georgia Tech and play in Paul

Johnsons ofensive scheme. Paul Johnson hasnt had a

top 25 recruiting class since hes been there. The very

last class in 2007 that was ranked inside the top 25belonged to Chan Gailey. Its do or die this year for

Randy Shannon and Miami is poised for a monster year.

I think they end Virginia Techs BCS championship

hopes late in the year, and are propelled to the Coastal

Division crown. They have already beaten Florida State

once and face them in the ACC championship game

only to lose the rematch, but could possibly still wind

up in a BCS game with an at large bid.

There are a lot of questions in Chapel Hill

right now. As it stands now, the Heels will be without

several key players on the defensive side of the ball.

Butch Davis thought this would be the year they would

turn the corner, but NCAA and Academic infractions

have gotten in the way. The silver lining is, due to

Coach Davis stellar recruiting, there is a lot of talent on

the roster, just inexperienced talent. But, if you are

better than your opponent, you can beat them. North

Carolina is most likely looking at another mediocre year

because of the NCAA violations, but its more important

to self discipline and clean up the program and win 7

or 8 ball games, than to win 10 or 11 and have the wins

    vacated later.

New Cavalier Coach Mike London will struggle

in the rebuilding process because he has to implement

a new defensive scheme now that Al Groh is gone and

there just isnt much talent there. London proved he

can coach when he was at Richmond, and I expect him

to make Virginia competitive in the coming years, but

not this year. Virginia Tech will be riding high and be

in the BCS championship discussion when they travel to

Coral Gables to take on Miami. The Hokies will go in to

that game 10-0, only to lose to the Hurricanes. Theywill lose the game, their chance at the Coastal Division

title, ACC Championship, and also their chance at a BCS

title in this game. They should recover, and beat

Virginia soundly in the season finale and end up in a

top tier bowl, possibly even earn a BCS at large bid.

    11/12PAGE 11THE RAMSEUR REVIEW - SEPTEMBER 2010

At the center of the Village is a deep well of life-giving water where thetownspeople meet. As they draw water their voices blend in the culture, society and wisdom that they share. Each month meet here at the well tohear those voices. A new voice is shared this month.

As I was walking toward the central gathering spot today, I noticed that thegroup was listening intently to a man that I had not seen before. There were noother side conversations, just this man answering someones question. Heseemed to be an authority on some subject but it took a while for me to get caughtup on the topic. Apparently, he had been a scientist at a university and wasexplaining something about food. As I got closer, it became clear he was talkingabout our food system and how it is affecting our health in bad ways. Someonethen asked why is this happening since our government is supposed to beprotecting us from bad things getting into our food. His answer was very broadand quite alarming to me.

The scientist explained that food processing is an industry, meaning thatthey are in it to make money. And since they are a very large industry, they havethe financial support to influence our leaders to allow many things to happen thatshould not. Of course many of us in our Village have talked about our electedleaders before, however this scientist was possibly indicating that our food might

not be as healthy as our officials lead us to believe. Weve all heard that fast food

may not be healthy for our bodies but I always thought that the food in the grocerystores was the good stuff. I listened further. The food companies typically hire afood chemist that specializes in creating chemically the tastes and desires thatwill hook people so they keep buying those foods. And those chemicals are noteven food. They also work on ways to make the processing of the foods lesscostly so the sales of the food provide better profits.

He began by using the soft drink beverages as an example. Essentiallyeverything in a soft drink is a processed chemical. Although some of thesechemicals are made from natural sources, they are still changed and no longerresembling a natural ingredient. This is a very disturbing piece of information sincethe labels on foods and drinks can often indicate that the product has somethingnatural in it. Therefore a soft drink does not provide our body with any usefulnutrition, just empty calories and chemicals that need to be flushed out of ourbodies. Recently, some of the soft drink companies began offering some productsthat no longer contain the high fructose corn syrup and have gone back to sugar. So we need to realize that both the sugar and the high fructose corn syrup arehighly processed and not resembling a natural ingredient. Often the diet drinks arethe most dangerous since they have replaced the sweetener with another man-made chemical that tricks the body. When the body gets tricked by thesechemicals, the metabolism processes change and the effects can go unnoticed for

a long time. We are mistakenly led to believe that the fewer calories, the better thedrink. Opps they didnt tell us that the nutrition also went down!

At this point, the scientist asked the group a question. How many of usknow what is really in our foods and how these ingredients change our bodies? Asexpected, no one raised a hand. One person commented that it is far toocomplicated to understand what is happening to our food and so we expect thegovernment to protect us. Hmmmm.. are we right back where we started? Moreon this thought soon!

Do you have something you would like to ask or say? Send your question or story

to the editor of your paper. You may be next months voice, At the Well!

AT THE WELLan anonymous column Nine years ago. I was a 16 year-old, sitting in Econ

class at Chatham Central. We heard. We watched. We wondered. Why would someone hate America

so much, that they would do something like this?Where is this coming from? Where is this going?

I have found that the farther away one gets, the more blurry the details become. So as weprepare to remember 9/11; I am determined to keep focused onwhat is important. What its all about. There were innocentpeople, hard working people, that died that day. It was a wake-up call to those of us who had no clue what an ignorant, bigotedholy war could do. These people used their religion to justify

the murder thousands. To hate an entire nation. What has concerned me lately is what Ive been hearingand seeing around me. I call it the 9/11 Knee-jerk. Obviously, the approaching anniversary has people revisiting old topicsand dormant emotions. We have outrage over a mosque beingplanned a few blocks from 9/11s Ground Zero. We have apastor in Florida planning on memorializing the day by burningcopies of the Koran. And in an opinion that could take me fromTea Party Crazy to Anti-American Jihadist in the eyes of some; Ibelieve we are losing our bearings and becoming dangerously

similar to the very groups that have caused us so much painand sacrifice since that September morning.

Why are the same people that have (in my opinionsoundly and correctly) fought liberty-killing moves like StimulusPackages and Universal Healthcare (and I dont mean thenursing home), declaring the idea of an Islamic man building ahouse of worship near Ground Zero un-American? And how canwe say Support Our Troops while stoking the coals of RadicalIslam? Its stupid, ineffective, and playing into the enemys

hand. Lets cut to the core of the issue. It

s not about wether youagree with Islam or not. Personally, I think that if you take the

Koran at its word, you will become radical and violent. BUT, weare ignoring the fact that part of being in America is that youhave the right to religious freedom. If we get caught up arguingabout a mosque or start burning Korans, well spend less timeon the pressing political matters of 2010. This isnt a hill Imready to die on. Plus, the military action that resulted from 9/11was NEVER about Christianity/Judaism/etc. vs Islam. It wasabout bringing justice against the guilty organizations.

If we make this a holy war in our own right, we end upbecoming no better than the jihadists, shooting ourselves withour own ammo in the process. Most importantly; we stopmaking 9/11 about remembering the lessons weve learned, thepeople weve lost, and what it means to be an American. So Iplead with you to not get caught up in the emotions and politicsand just spend the day in prayer for our nation and her heros.
