WORKED CLOSELY WITH SENIOR PROJECT
ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS, AND CONSULTANTS, TO
REALIZE AND DRAFT KEY EXTERIOR DETAILS.
DUE TO THE SIZE AND CALIBER OF THE PROJECT,
CONSTANT COORDINATION AND
INSTANT COMMUNICATION WAS NECESSARY AT ALL
LEVELS OF DESIGN AND PRODUCTION.
WE EFFECTIVELY COORDINATED BY USING REVIT
AND MICROSOFT LYNC TO ENGAGE IN REAL-TIME
DESKTOP SHARING, INSTANT MESSAGING WITH
THE TEAM, AND LIVE MEETINGS WHEN NECESSARY
WITH TEAM MEMBERS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
THE PROJECT IS CURRENTLY UNDER
REVIEW AND WILL BEGIN CONSTRUCTION SOON.

The red scheme is shown slightly detached from the existing Building 40 structure, and envisioned to be physically joined by a narrow, transparent link. By separating the two masses, the Phase II addition can express its own identity and convey the appearance of an autonomous, free-standing facility. The primary advantages of this scheme are that the massing is tailor-fit for the available site, and the minimal interface with Building 40 should reduce the construction disruption to current operations within the existing VRC.
In order to maintain the loading dock access in its current location, the red scheme explores the notion of cantilevering the upper floors over the service access drive. The cantilever also provides the ability to capture the maximum usable space afforded by the site perimeter setback requirements. This scheme also attempts to maximize exposure to diffuse north daylight and provide additional outdoor terraces that have become a great amenity for occupants in the original building.

The blue scheme attempts to overcome some of the challenges posed by the red scheme through various changes to the massing. It maintains a similar expression when seen from Convent Drive, yet explores a wider connection link that provides additional usable area and a stronger relationship to the existing structure. This tran-sitional connection element was conceptually understood to be a valuable collaboration space between two distinct research environments.
While this scheme also strives to fully utilize the available site, it does so without the use of a cantilevered structure. Instead, the blue scheme proposes a relocation of the Building 40 loading dock, and conceals it within the north façade of the expansion structure. As a result, this displacement eliminates the need for a long service drive and allows other programmatic functions to backfill the current service area.The move enhances opportunities for vivarium and loading dock expansion.

The purple scheme focuses on a dual massing approach that responds equally to the existing facility ‘block’ and the corner site condition. The initial massing gesture extends northward from Building 40, and is overlapped by a second, rotated massing element that is similar in size. Like the red scheme, the purple design concept explored the use of cantilevers in order to bridge a portion of the service access road and stretch the floor plate to the site limitation.
The primary advantage of this scheme is the large floor plates, and the layout flexibility that they could provide. This scheme tries to maximize the perimeter envelope for enhanced natural daylighting opportunities, with a large portion of the façade oriented toward the north to receive more diffuse light.
The connection to the existing building was studied to determine the best proportion, and remains quite flexible with regards to the passage width.

The yellow scheme most closely adheres to the NIH Master Plan and the original vision of the Phase II expansion. The addition directly adjoins the existing structure across the entire north façade, and extends toward the north until interrupted by the setback requirements. The design intent is to create a single, contiguous expression that makes the two structures visually inseparable.
While it respects the site context better than the other schemes, it requires a compromise with gross floor area. The full abutment along the north of Building 40 may increase the likelihood of disruption during construction, and eliminate existing windows to a few private offices.

WITH A TEAM OF TWO LAB PLANNERS AND A SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER, WE PERFORMED SITE ANALYSIS AND DIGITAL MASSING/ PROGRAMMING STUDIES USING SKETCHUP,
AUTOCAD, MICROSOFT OFFICE, AND THE ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE PROGRAMS.
THROUGH CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH ALL DESIGNERS, I TOOK CHARGE OF DESIGNING MOST GRAPHICS, VIDEO WALKTHROUGHS, AND DELIVERABLES FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE
OF HEALTH.
THE DELIVERABLES WILL BE USED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH WHEN FUNDING FOR THE PROJECT IS AVAILABLE.

ALSO CONSIDERED AT THIS SCALE AND PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN WAS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
SHADOW STUDIES WERE ALSO CONDUCTED TO SHOW THE EFFECTS OF THE MASS ON ITS SURROUNDINGS AT ALL TIMES OF THE YEAR, EXEMPLIFYING THE CAREFUL ATTENTION

BIESMAN-SIMONS FROM CONCEPTUAL MASSING STUDIES TO DESIGN DEVELOPMENT. MR. BIESMAN-SIMONS CONSULTED WITH MY DIGITAL MODEL SKILLS TO HELP REALIZE THE COMPLEX DESIGN OF THIS PROJECT.
