RIDER EDUCATION CORNER

“Hey man, what’s your problem!” This muffled phrase has been shouted from the inside of many motorcycle helmets. Why do motorcyclists seem to get pushed around in traffic? Let’s shine some light on the dark subject of road rage, specifically as it applies to riding.

Before getting into the nitty gritty, here are some facts about stress that help us understand the root causes behind road rage. Stress is contagious. That means it spreads like wildfire. Our caveman instincts are to fight or flight under stress. Come across the wrong dude when he’s having a bad day and watch out. It’s not uncommon for a tiny insult to explode into a massive ordeal.

It may be hard to accept, but much of the hostility on the street has to do with plain ol’ misunderstanding. As riders, we often cope with our vulnerability by operating our motorcy-cles in a way that minimizes risk. Taking advantage of the maneuverability and performance characteristics of a motorcycle may appear reckless and self-centered to the general public. Sharply accelerating into open space on an expressway may cause others to gasp or become resentful. Cars and trucks aren’t as nimble in traffic, perhaps causing an “us versus them” mentality.

Adding to the confusion, car drivers really do have a difficult time seeing motorcycles in traffic. In other words, people don’t ignore us on purpose. The size and shape of a motorcy-cle makes it more difficult for the human brain to recognize in the mix. True, drivers should take extra care to “look twice for bikes.” Either we can complain about not being seen or compensate for that flaw in others. Which choice is more likely to save your bacon?

Indulgence can lead to conflict. Aggressive riding may feel energizing to the rider, but it ag-gravates and annoys other roadway users. Ever pass that car on a twisty back road? While that overtake opened up a stretch of riding bliss ahead of you, it may have dissed that driver left in your dust. Surprisingly, even passing another motorcyclist can incite anger.

If you want a more relaxing role, get control of yourself first before pointing the finger at oth-ers. Sure, there are some real jerks out there. That’s why we need to keep our cool. Riders are exposed while moving and stopped. Chances are you know a fellow rider that has been chewed out at a stop light by an enraged cager. Ego on a motorcycle can backfire.

Because you love motorcycling, it may be difficult to realize that lots of folks don’t. To them you’re nothing more than a hot shot. Therefore, we need to work a bit on our reputation to keep road rage from creeping in on either side. Never forget that you have way more to lose on your bike than the car driver does.

It’s also a good idea to make yourself more visible in traffic. This can be accomplished through brightly colored gear or appropriate lane positioning.

Try the “2-for-1 rule”. For every situation where you might offend one roadway user, be cour-teous to two others. It could be a friendly wave or giving up that parking space. But the next rider they encounter might get fair treatment based on your paying it forward.

So here’s your call to action: Let your stress roll away with the miles, as it should be. Try to be a more courteous and tolerant rider. You’ll enjoy it more.

Well it sure was good to get back on the bike last Saturday. We had another good ride led by Philip Blair. We are certainly glad that Philip retired. We were also blessed with a great turnout to the ride even though it started out a little cool. There was a marked absence of some co-riders including mine who had had her toe worked on and could not get into a shoe so her toes might have been a little cold.

The Chapter continues to do well and we are blessed to have such good leadership. We should all be thankful for the work that Ray and Linda Willis do on our behalf. The weather has continued to be good

so get out there and make some good memories on your bike.

A slight detour on the ride put us on a dirt road, thus giving Philip the new name “dusty road” - this was an adventurous ride that also included a U-Turn! It was great!

The Gulf Wings Newsletter

We have some great events coming up in March, April, and May—be sure to check out those dates in the Newsletter “Big Dates” page 3.

There is a Ride for Kids April 30th (Sunday) located at the Lake Conroe KOA at 19785 Highway 105 West in Montgomery. You can register on line at: rideforkids.org or arrive early and register on site from 8 to 9:30 AM. The ride starts at 10:00 AM rain or shine. Also, Brenda Dillon is involved with this ride and is hosting a Pampered Chef party or book sale which the proceeds will be donated to the Ride for Kids. You may contact her at: 936-443-6542

Also in April we have the Region Rally in Marshall, TX—April 27-29. You might want to attend that rally or the Texas District Rally in Wichita Falls May 18—20. Several of us are planning to ride up together for that. If you plan to attend the Texas District Rally, contact either Ray Willis or Tommy Nichols for meet up times for the ride.

We will be having our annual Ice Cream Social May 27th at Jim & Teresa Cook’s home. This happens to fall on Memorial Day weekend, but we don’t think that will interfere much with this social gathering. This will also be a birthday celebration for both Jim & Teresa!

Interview with Erin and Philip, who's new nick name is 'Dusty Road', after his ride on Feb 11.

Erin Gilligan and Philip Blair have been involved with GWRRA a long time. In fact Philip's very first GW number only had 4 digits... 1704. That's hard to conceive, huh!?

Philip has had motorcycles most of his life. He talked his parents into letting him get one while he was in high school so he could handle his paper route better. That was number one... a Honda Cub 50, circa 1962.

I started my interview with Erin.

Back seat Barb: Erin have you also been around bikes all your life?

Erin: Not at all. In fact I had only been on a motorcycle once before Philip and I got married. My family wasn't and isn't enthused about motorcycles. I started riding in 2004 when Philip got his '04 Gold Wing and we joined G at that time.

Back seat Barb: So your favorite rides, and restaurants to ride to are relatively new?

Erin: Yes, compared to Philip & some of these Chapter Members. I think one of my favorite riding places is Palo Duro Canyon, and of course, closer, is the Sam Houston Forest; and I also enjoy the Talimena Scenic Trail around Mena, AR. For eating I like 'Pam's Hateful Hussy restaurant' in Talihina, Oklahoma.

Back seat Barb: Philip tell us about your early rides.

Philip: I actually had to beg my parents to let me get that little Honda Cub. They were not too excited about motorcy-cles. Then I did some dirt riding. I have a picture of me in the air in 1972. In the 60's I had a Super Hawk that I was on when a woman hit me and actually ran over both me and the bike. I remember the date. Sept 20, 1966. The woman driver ran a stop sign, and she was crying as I was trying to pull my bike out from under her car. I wound up with only 2 stitches but I remember the date, because just 2 weeks later I was in a car wreck that broke my right leg. Outside of the 'garage drop' that's my only mishap on a bike. I now ride a 2016 Matte Silver Black Out'.

BSB: Ok, how about good rides... no crazy drivers And good eats.

Philip: Back in the '80's our Chapter would meet on a Saturday morning at 'Mama B's and then decide where we were going. I like Murphy's steak house in Winchester, and enjoy riding the Hill Country, Three Sisters, and Big Bend HWY 170. I was raised up in Kilgore so I am familiar with that area of TX. In fact I am thinking of doing a Chapter ride to New York ,TX, where we could ride a 'Zip Line'. A couple memorable rides in my past include a 1981 long ride from here to California on Hwy I-10. 27 hours long, and we just slept on the ground in a rest area. But one of our riders had an emer-gency pop up at home, so we turned around and didn't really get to finish the whole ride. I also fondly remember my 'Iron Butt' ride with Sam and Mike Dwyer in '06 or '07.

Back Seat Barb: Raised in Kilgore, with...?

Philip: I had 3 brothers, (one deceased) and one sister. My oldest brother is a professional bowler. My siblings are now in Tampa, FL, Florence MO. and Clear Lake, TX.

Back Seat Barb: And you are BRAND new at this retirement stuff. Have you developed any other hobbies yet? Or do you help Erin with hers?

Philip: Not anything more than 'Honey Do's but I did only retire on January 31 of this year. I am really looking forward to leading more rides and maybe even an over-nighter.

Erin: As for my other hobbies, I now have time for quilting and sewing, since we no longer have the motorcycle shop.

Back Seat Barb: Yes, many of us spent time, (and-$) in that shop. We were sorry to see it go, but happy to see more of YOU.
