Holy name Becomes Family and Foundation
Dating back to the 1920’s, the Jerry and Kathy Pflug family has been a part of the Holy Name
community. Jerry Pflug graduated from Holy Name grade school in 1935. Jerry and his
wife Kathy sent all 15 of their children through grade school at Holy Name and all but two
graduated from Holy Name High School. Tony Pflug was one of the 15 children...11th in the
line! He graduated from Holy Name High School in 1975. Tony met his wife Nettie Vogltanz
Pflug in religion class in high school. She graduated in 1976; they were married the same year.
All seven of their children graduated from Holy Name Grade School. Tony and Nettie now
have two granddaughters attending Holy Name School. Kamryn Pflug-Lor, daughter of Erin,
is in the fourth grade. Averi Pounds, daughter of Jami, is in Kindergarten. These young ladies
represent the fourth generation and over 90 years of the Pflug family presence at Holy Name.
Since 1978, Tony’s family has lived directly across the street from Holy Name Church. He has
always been an instrumental part of the church, working very closely with 8 different pastors.
He has helped with many behind the scenes activities, such as placing the cross on top of
the bell tower on the church and repairing leaking roofs on all campus buildings. He’s been a
member of the Parish Council, Knights of Columbus and the Men’s Club.
Tony has always had a passion for music and especially for the drums. He said his first time
playing the drums in the church was for Fred and Betsy Bender’s wedding in 1983. He has
played drums in church every Sunday as a member of the church choir since 2004.
Many families have played very important roles throughout the history of Holy Name. When
asked what the first thing he thinks of when he hears “Holy Name”, Tony said “Second Family!
It’s just a big family! Actually not even a
second family, it is family. The
foundation of my life was built
by the nuns, priests and
families that were and are
connected to Holy Name.”

I hear the question “How is it going?” many times over throughout the school year. I am so pleased that I am able to respond with a big smile and a hearty “Great!” I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful staff of educators who work miracles everyday with our students. This spring we have much to celebrate that is great!
For the 4th consecutive year our students have been privileged to participate in a program sponsored by the philosophy department at Creighton University called P4K (Philosophy For Kids). As a culminating experience each of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students pondered a new “idea” that would make life better. Within teams of three or four the idea came to life on a display board and in verbal presentations. On April 30th we all traveled to the Harper Ballroom on the Creighton University campus to present these “Ideas” to a larger University audience. I beamed with pride as these young entrepreneurs supported their idea to professors, college students and their parents.
Our 4th through 8th grade math students participated in the Archdiocesan math contest in early April. They brought back 1st and 2nd place trophies in several of the competition areas. One of our 7th grade students earned a seat in the citywide National Geographic Bee competition. Our 5th grade students completed a 10 week course in ballroom dancing supported by the ARTery organization. Their final performance was an exhibition that included 5th graders from All Saints and Sacred Heart Schools who also completed this course. We all saw awkward pre-teens turn into polished young ladies and gentle-men as they worked through the lessons.
Fifty-two Family Fund Scholarships were awarded to current students in grades 2 through 7 at our Honors Assembly on May 16th! AND...Four of our 14 graduating 8th graders earned Catholic high school academic scholarships based on their scores from the entrance exam taken in January. Another 8th grader earned a Leadership Award. A survey completed with the 21 members of our graduating class of 2010, who are all seniors in high school, showed that all are graduating and planning to attend college or trade school in the fall. Several have earned significant scholarships to assist with their post secondary education.
I hope that all of those reading this recognize the significance of these accolades. We are considered a “small” Catholic school! Yet, we mingle with larger schools and accomplish great things. The faculty and I thank you for your continued support in helping us in this mission. The prayers and financial assistance you provide make all things “GREAT!” at Holy Name! God Bless each of you and your families.

read to Kids DayEach year in March, Holy Name
School is fortunate to welcome “guest
readers” to the preschool through
eighth grade classrooms for the Read
to Kids program. On Friday mornings,
the readers select a book to read to
the students and talk to them about
the importance of their education and
how it led to career opportunities.
In its 17th year, Holy Name was
honored to welcome more than fifty
members of the community.

Holy name Fish Fry For 33 years now the Holy Name Fish Fry has been attracting growing crowds of patrons. Every Friday during Lent, the Fish
Fry draws crowds of 2,000 or more diners. What started with just 10 members from the Holy Name Men’s Club in 1981 now
has over 150 volunteers working. The highest recorded attendance was in 2009 when 2,899 customers showed up to enjoy
a plate of fish. Holy Name is very fortunate to have so many alumni and volunteers to help make the Fish Fry a success
every year.

are you ALL IN for Holy name School? Our 2014 Harvest chairs, Carol G72 and Mike McGlade and co-chairs Amber and Shane G92 Allen invite you to join us for an exciting evening of great fun and food! We will gather in the beautiful Truhlsen Event Center on the UNMC campus (42nd & Emile) for our Harvest event on Friday, October 3.
If you are interested in volunteering to help with planning the event please contact Lauren Weeks in the Development Office at 402-451-5403 ext 108. We hope to see you there!
Holy name annual FundThe Holy Name School Annual Fund is the single most important fundraising effort for our school because it immediately and directly impacts our students. These gifts support more than 30% of the annual operating revenue. Your prayers and generous support SHINE for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, raising over $225,000! Thank you! The Annual Fund is an ongoing effort, so it is never too late to add your gift. Over time it is our intention to meet an annual goal of $362,000. We are so grateful for the generosity of our Holy Name alumni, parents of alumni, current school families and many community friends.
a Big Thank you to cueS!Over the past year you have read about Holy Name School’s partnership with the CUES organization. CUES was started over 40 years ago to support Sacred Heart School to continue to serve children in the 24th and Wirt Street area of Omaha. Today CUES has taken two more schools under their umbrella—Holy Name School and All Saints School. As well as providing guidance for business operations, this organization is committed to providing financial support. This year CUES fundraising efforts were very successful! A check for $200,000 was presented to Mrs. Sofia Kock, principal of Holy Name School by Fr. Tom Fangman, President, and Mr. Michael Findley, Executive Director of CUES. Thank you!
2014 imagineIt was a beautiful evening for over 180 guests! The event was held on Friday, May 2nd at the Mainelli Center at St. Robert’s. It was a great success raising over $40,000 to meet the needs of our students and faculty. Our thanks go out to our chair couples, the Holy Name Grade School alumni who facilitated all of the fun activities and, most importantly, all of the guests who attended the event in support of our mission! From THe PaSTor
an “indelible mark on the Soul”There is an indelible mark on the souls of all who make Holy Name their spiritual home. It doesn’t matter where one goes; there is something special about being part of Holy Name. I do not use the sacramental term, an “indelible mark on the soul” lightly. It has been a privilege to spend this year at Holy Name. After 40 years of priesthood, my family and friends became part of my ministry, and I was able to be a part of welcoming the Hispanic community to the parish.
St. Paul says of himself, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.” (I Cor. 3:6) I realize that I am a missionary, called to welcome people to Christ and to the Church. This work of God, this gem of diversity in North Omaha will continue because of the faith and dedication of the people of Holy Name. Now is the time that I move on to continue missionary evangelism elsewhere. May God bless Holy Name and all who come to this very special parish.
Thanks to all who have encouraged and supported me over the years, especially this year. There is something very special taking place in the diversity that is shaping Holy Name at this time. ¡Qué viva Holy Name¡ ¡Qué viva la Virgen¡ ¡Qué viva Cristo Rey¡
Fr. Mike McAndrew, CSsR
There is only one truth: Jesus!Has the celebration of Easter joys moved us to deeper appreciation of our faith? It is not enough to profess what we believe; we are expected to live what we believe. Jesus tells us that he is the only gateway to whatever salvation is possible and all must be willing to pass through him. There is only one truth: Jesus!
That is why we are told to go and spread the Good News to the world so that Jesus and his saving work are known to all the corners of the earth. At Holy Name, we do this. Our dedicated and committed teachers spread the Good News in their lessons, and our students share this gift with their parents, neighbors and friends.
Our students’ deep rooted faith and excitement is evident to all who visit with them. The first week of May, second grade children made their first Holy Communion at Holy Name. They received the Lord of Life for the first time in their lives. What a gift! This past week, we had our school May Crowning of Mary celebration where students honored our Blessed Mother with flowers. All throughout the school day, you could hear various classes come visit our Blessed Mother and recite the rosary. What a testament of faith. The Holy Name Religious Education program will host Weird Animals Vacation Bible School: Where Jesus’ Love is One-of-a-Kind at the end of June.
Also, in June, I look forward to celebrating with you at the Alumni Mass. It is always an honor to visit with our Alumni from near and far because it reminds our current students of their proud Holy Name heritage. See you next month!
Grace and peace of the risen Lord be yours, Reverend Vitalis Anyanike, Pastor
