Creating exceptional experiences in Jewish

living and learning for youth, adults,

families and communities is at the

heart of everything we do at Ramah

Darom. In addition to our signature

Camp Ramah Darom summer

program, thousands of Jewish

youth and adults come to our

facility throughout the year to

celebrate simchas, host Shabbat

retreats and join us for our year-round

programs. Inside the pages of this

annual report you will get a glimpse

of the enduring impact Ramah

Darom has on the lives of those

we touch.

he smell of freshly-baked challah seeping from the chadar ochel. The site of close friends in the glow of the Havdallah candle. The sound of children recit-ing t’filah among the chirping birds and rustling trees on a crisp camp morning.

To us, what makes Ramah Darom so unique is the way it provides everyone who visits with awe-inspiring, distinctive moments in Jewish living and learn-ing. Nestled on 122 striking acres of Appalachian Valley, when campers and groups come to visit, Ramah Darom becomes a micro-society that fosters social, intellectual and religious growth unlike anywhere else, as they breathe its air and let it fill their senses.

As you know, in March 2010 we began a strategic planning process to help us articulate exactly what it is that makes Ramah Darom so special and explore how we can continue to manifest the spirit of our organization in our programs and initiatives. The completion of this work this year marked an important milestone for us, and we are excited to share our new vision statement with you:

Ramah Darom: Exceptional experiences in Jewish living and learning for youth and adults, families and communities.

We are confident the direction we have developed for Ramah Darom will position us well to continue to advance our work of fostering strong Jewish community through exceptional Jewish experiences. In fact, we have already begun realizing this vision:

n In 2011, we hosted close to 30 simchas, religious groups and temple retreats at our Tumbling Waters retreat center, bringing in more groups, and in turn, more participants in our programs than ever before.

n We doubled the number of year-round programs we offer, extending the reach of Ramah Darom’s exceptional experiences well beyond the summer camp season.

n We increased participation in our Passover retreat by 9 percent, with more attendees than ever before.

n We continued to earn recognition for our outstanding programs. This year, the American Camp Association honored us with its Edie Klein Award for Program Excellence for our Fine Arts Program, and we continued to receive recognition from The Covenant Foundation for Camp Yofi, our program for Jewish families with children with autism spectrum disorder.

n At last summer’s board retreat at camp, we developed a vision of building and strengthening our Ramah communities throughout the Southeast. Since then, we have manifested this dream by hosting Shabbats, Havdallahs and other programs throughout dozens of communities in the South.

We asked a few Ramah Darom camp and program participants to share their stories with you through the pages of this annual report. We hope their stories inspire you to continue to join us in fostering community through extraordinary Jewish living and learning experiences at Ramah Darom, and thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

F or the past several years, Ramah Darom has been maturing into the organization we have always aspired to be: one that offers exceptional Jewish experiences year-round.

This year, more than ever, we have achieved our goal of providing Jewish youth, adults, families and communities with extraordinary experiences throughout the year. We have advanced our efforts to create year-round programs centered on Jewish living and learning by welcoming Amy Bram, Director of Exceptional Experiences, to our team. Throughout 2011, we provided more year-round programs than we ever have in the past, and our 2011 retreat season at Tumbling Waters brought in more program groups and participants than ever before. Throughout the year, we hosted more than 30 groups and programs, including many simchas, synagogue retreats, school events and Jewish learning opportuni-ties. We held our best-ever Passover retreat, and hosted dozens of new retreats and programs with both local and national organizations.

By professionalizing our operations on-site and dedicating more staff resources to our year-round programming, we will continue to be able to provide extraor-dinary service and retreats throughout the year, in turn, maximizing the number of people who experience Judaism through Ramah Darom. Here are some highlights:

Martin J. Gottlieb Day School“Martin J. Gottlieb Day School has now held its annual retreat at Ramah Darom for three years, and each year, we have left Jacksonville as a group and returned from Ramah Darom as a family. Our parents often ask, ‘Why is it necessary to go nine hours away for our annual retreat?’ The answer is simple – the facilities, natural beauty, kosher food, accommodations and staff make Ramah Darom our only choice! Ramah Darom is everything you could

hope for in a Jewish informal educational experience. This year’s retreat felt like we squeezed a summer’s session of camp into just four days!”

– Edith Horovitz, Vice Principal, Martin J. Gottlieb Day School, Jacksonville, Florida

Limmud at Ramah Darom“As I davened the Amidah on the pavilion overlooking the lake at Ramah Darom, the birds were serenading us and the butterflies were lifting our spirits. This beautiful setting provided an enriching, natural environment for us to learn with remarkable scholars and build new relationships with a diverse and exciting Jewish community.”

– Paul A. Flexner, Limmud Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia

Weddings at Ramah Darom“We had only been engaged a couple of hours when Ramah first crossed our minds as a wedding location. The wedding itself was everything we hoped it would be: warm, relaxed, comfortable, low-key…it really felt like ‘us’. We spent the weekend surrounded by friends and family at a place we love and the place where we first had fallen in love. You can’t ask for anything more than that! Most of our guests had never been to Ramah Darom before and many were shocked, both

by the top-flight facilities and the beautiful setting. Their reaction made us proud to call Ramah Darom our home away from home.”

– Max Socol, Gesher 2002, Washington, D.C.

reating meaningful Jewish experiences that inspire young people has been the hallmark of Camp Ramah Darom for 15 seasons. Looking back on 2011, this year was no exception.

This year, more than 800 campers from close to 600 families joined us from 24 states and 5 countries for a summer full of new, exciting experiences. This summer we strengthened many of our signature programs. We enhanced our sports offerings by building a new street hockey arena, recorded a new CD of Ramah

music in conjunction with our annual Zimriyah (song festival) and enhanced our organic farming program. Our campers participated in exciting specialty clinics featuring professional athletes and experts. While improving upon our current offerings we also added several new ones, including our brand-new mountain biking program.

This summer we also continued to welcome non-traditional campers. Families with pre-camper-aged children joined us for Family Camp each session. Rabbis, Cantors and Jewish educators came to learn how to bring our innovative educa-tional models back to their communities. And for the first time last summer, we welcomed camper grandparents for a unique and fun Shabbat, and hosted a new two-week Taste of Ramah program for rising 4th graders.

This year, we have put a new focus on bringing experiences directly to communi-ties throughout the Southeast. Our camper-created Travelling Trailer and intern-led Ramah Services Corps have brought Ramah-style educational experiences directly to synagogue and religious school settings. And our final Havdallah service, broadcast live from camp last summer, inspired dancing from parents participating from their computers! All of these efforts advanced our goal of providing as many people as possible with the chance to experience Ramah Darom.

We cannot discuss last summer without mention of the tragic death and heartbreaking loss of our beloved camper, Andrew Silvershein (z”l). The outpouring of support and comfort from our camp community in the wake of this tragedy was extraordinary, and for that I continue to express my gratitude to the Ramah Darom staff members, parents and alumni.

The unique way that individuals in our community support one another, not just during the summer but all year round, has never been more clear. The manner in which our campers, staff members and alumni enact Jewish values and demonstrate Jewish commitment

is indeed the special ripple effect of Camp Ramah Darom. I know that 2012 will be a year in which Ramah Darom continues to inspire all those whose lives we have the priviledge to touch by filling their summers with sacred moments and teaching them how to live adult lives filled with purpose and meaning.

Family Camp “We were lucky enough to take the kids to Disney World for their first time ever last month and we had a great time. A few days after, I asked the kids if they could choose, if they would want to return to Disney or to Family Camp at Ramah Darom. Four out of five kids preferred Family Camp to Disney! Choosy kids choose Ramah!” – Zipora Rindsberg, Family Camp 2011, Boca Raton, Florida

Gesher 2000 Reunion“I will never forget my first Shabbat as a camper, as it was the first time I had experienced true ruach. That Shabbat stuck with me and helped shape my Jewish identity today. Attending the Gesher 2000 reunion was an amazing experience because it brought me back to these roots. As a 26 year old, the Ramah Darom community has kept me engaged throughout my college years and beyond, bridging a gap from my involvement in Judaism as an adolescent to that as an adult.” – Andrea Kass, Gesher 2000 Alum, St. Louis, Missouri

Grandparents Weekend“Because Camp Ramah Darom did not exist when I was raising my children in Chattanooga, Tennessee, they did not have the opportunity to experience Jewish summer camp. With four grandsons at Camp Ramah Darom last summer, we were thrilled to have a chance to attend Grandparents Weekend! Going from activity to activity and seeing Ramah Darom in action, to us, was a wonder-ful sign that Judaism is alive and thriving in the South.” – Amelia Allen, Grandparents Weekend 2011, Chattanooga, Tennessee

To our Ramah Darom family,

We would like to thank you all for your love and support over the last nine

months. We have read every one of the hundreds of cards and heartfelt

messages from Ramah parents, grandparents and from Ramah campers

themselves. As the summer approaches, we are reminded of how much

Andrew looked forward to going to camp at Ramah Darom.

The stories about Andrew’s impact at camp, conveyed to us by both

campers and staff, have helped us get through each day. Even though

Andrew’s loss affects us every day, your support of his scholarship fund

ensures that his light continues to “shine”.

It is our goal to preserve Andrew’s memory by supporting the things he

loved the most. Your contributions to his scholarship fund support teens

that would not have the opportunity to experience their Gesher summer

and the ruach Andrew looked forward to every summer without your

assistance.

Andrew’s memory is preserved through this

scholarship fund, and we hope that you will continue

to support this worthy endeavor.

In Memory of Andrew Silvershein, z”l

ur Ramah Darom community was irrevocably changed this summer by the tragic death of Andrew Silvershein, who had been a camper at Camp Ramah Darom for seven years.

In the days and weeks following this terrible loss, our community found inspiration in the memory of this special young man and in the extraordinary grace of his parents, Joel and Marci, who travelled to Camp Ramah Darom from their home in Davie, Florida to encourage us to remember and emulate the sense of purpose, love and joy that Andrew found at camp.

Andrew’s spirit, individualism, creativity, love of music, sense of humor, concern for others and endearing smile are among the qualities we miss most about him. Andrew’s nickname, “Sunshine,” was a reflection of his constant smile and the enthusiasm he had for Camp Ramah Darom and for life. His passing has elicited numerous tributes. This year the 71 campers in his Gesher aidah dedicated their summer to him, adopting the motto “72 Strong” to signify that he would forever be a part of each of their lives. In omanut, campers created a likeness of Andrew, with a guitar on his back and a sunshine symbol on his chest, and added it to the Gesher plaque. His friends wrote a moving song about him which they performed for the camp and professionally recorded to be distributed to our entire community. Throughout the year, campers hosted benefit concerts and developed numerous websites and blogs in his honor. And in December, 56 of Andrew’s Gesher campmates met his parents in Florida to join them in visiting his grave.

This summer we will attempt to continue to carry on Andrew’s sense of compassion and integrity by distributing the first annual Andrew Silvershein “Sunshine” Award to a Gesher camper who most exemplifies the values Andrew exhibited. And at the request of his parents, we have established a permanent Andrew Silvershein Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory so other Gesher-aged children can have the opportunity to enjoy the camp that he loved so dearly. To date over $50,000 has been received toward an initial goal of $100,000.

Andrew had a unique spark that has shone through the darkness of our mourning. Just as the sun’s rays spread warmth throughout the world, we hope our community’s memorial efforts will kindle Andrew’s spark, and make the unique way he inspired those around him one of his lasting legacies.

The Andrew Silvershein Memorial Scholarship Fund is a permanent fund that will continue Andrew’s legacy and perpetuate his memory at Camp Ramah Darom. If you would like to contribute, please mail your donation to the Andrew Silvershein Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Ramah Darom, 6400 Powers Ferry Road, Suite 215, Atlanta, GA 30339, or visit our website: http://www.ramahdarom.org.

Financial OverviewThrough the strategic planning process we completed this year, we began honing in on the overall goal that is at the root of everything we do at Ramah Darom: to provide as many youth, adults, families and communities as possible with exceptional experiences in Jewish living and learning.

In 2011, we purposefully leveraged our resources to achieve this goal and were enormously successful. This year, we increased our Annual Fund donor base by a notable 36 percent, added 11 new gifts to our Mapal Legacy Society and doubled the number of year-round programs we offer. As a result, we increased our Tumbling Waters retreat center revenue by 27 percent.

At the same time, due to reduced local community funding and the challenging economic environment, there has been more demand on us than ever before to provide assistance to campers and families. With the expiration of major grant funding from a foundation that provided for the neediest families, we increased our fundraising efforts so we could continue to sustain the level of support we were providing with the grant. Additionally, we continued to raise funds for nationally acclaimed Camp Yofi, and for our endowment and capital needs as well. Overall, we raised $610,463 in 2011. We continue to work hard to keep our expenses down, despite the increase in the cost of commodities like fuel and food, so we can make our camp and year-round programs available to as many families as possible.

In this new fiscal year, we will continue to work hard to manage our expenses without compromising our first-class programs and staff. We have more summer and year-round efforts planned than ever before and are looking forward to continuing to work tirelessly to strengthen the Jewish community through extraordinary programs.
