Thank you for standing up for so many deserving men, women and children this Ramadhan by supporting The World Federation’s Ramadhan Relief Fund 1434. Living in poverty and barely getting enough to eat is not easy. With the support of thousands of concerned friends like you, The World Federation in partnership with its Regional Members - including Africa Federation, The Council of European Jamaats (CoEJ), NASIMCO, Pakistan Federation, KSIMC of Dubai, Muhammadi Welfare Association of Australia, Panjtan Society of Victoria, Federation of Kutch, KSI Jamaat of Mumbai and SI Jamaat of Aden - continued to work with people around the world to provide aid and relief to those among us who were alone this Ramadhan.

This year, The World Federation distributed Ramadhan Relief in 19 countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Burundi, Gaza, Haiti, India, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Madagascar, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and the United Kingdom.

Ramadhan Relief 1434 was unique where more mothers, youth groups and children joined our annual campaign against hunger by organising fundraising events and creating a real buzz to make a real difference in the lives of so many. As well, concerned individuals from around the world increased their support with a donation to the Ramadhan Relief Fund. Thanks to everyone’s collective and generous support, we were able to distribute 376,750 GBP / 610,000 USD in various forms of aid including food baskets, iftaars, monetary assistance and debt relief.

Volunteers worked long days, faced many challenges and made difficult journeys to reach out to families, widows, orphans, the elderly and the disabled who live in far and remote areas.

Real teamwork was the secret of all of our accomplishments this Ramadhan. From donors to well-wishers to volunteers to those helping to promote the Ramadhan Relief Fund - they all partook in the powerful and unquenchable spirit of giving and sharing during this Blessed month.

On behalf of all of those whose lives you touched, whose tears you helped dry and whose hearts you filled with love, thank you.

Shan-E-Abbas HassamSecretary General The World Federation of KSIMC

Case StudyEn route to delivering food parcels in Dare Sof, our volunteers were driving in the dark night on a rutted road. Unfortunately, the truck containing all of the food baskets slipped into the adjacent river. With much difficulty, team members were able to safely remove the food from the vehicle and deliver the baskets to deserving families.

Unemployment

is a big problem in Afghanistan. In addition, the cost of food and clothes continues to rise and has become unaffordable.

(Afghanistan distribution agent)

BackgroundChronic conflict has plagued Afghanistan for decades, fueling social ills like interfaith strife and poverty. The World Bank estimated that 36% of the population lies below the poverty line, and thereby struggles to afford basic necessities like healthy foods, medicine and adequate clothing.

With the highest infant mortality rate in the world coupled by high risks and exposure to waterborne diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, the support of donors here is crucial where they provide a vital lifeline for many families who are torn apart by the extensive health crisis and also widespread poverty.

Case StudyAkber was born deaf and mute. His mother worked odd jobs to provide for her son because he could not find any work due to his disability. This year, Akber’s mother passed away. Ramadhan Relief helped to pay for some of his expenses.

Ramadhan

Relief is a celebration for the less fortunate members of our community. They come in their best attire... children also accompany the parents. We convey to the donors their prayers & gratitude.

(Bangladesh distribution agent)

BackgroundOver the last decade, Bangladesh has made significant progress in its war against poverty. Despite this achievement, the lack of education and access to quality health care perpetuates poverty. Many of the locals are still at risk of malnutrition and waterborne diseases such as diarrhea. This alone threatens and takes the lives of over 100,000 children a year in Bangladesh due to the scarcity of clean drinking water.

Bangladesh is also particularly vulnerable to global warming, making it one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. Year after year, many homes are damaged and crops destroyed making it increasingly difficult for many rural families to obtain a sustainable income to provide for their basic needs.

As well, overcrowding in urban slums exposes over 80,000 residents to a deadly concoction of diseases such as cholera and malaria, many of whom live on less than $2 a day.

6 7

Case StudyDue to unemployment and a weak state allowance, one of our beneficiary families was struggling very hard to provide for the family or improve their standard of living. Inevitably their children were forced to beg on the streets. This was the cue for Ramadan Relief 2013 to step in and complete desperately needed renovations to their home. A new door, window and roof were installed which provided a much needed sense of security and stability to the family living here.

Majority of

the Bosnia Shia community members are converts, young couples with small children. Some of them are working, some are studying and some are unemployed.

BackgroundIn a country devastated by a horrific war, Bosnia has never fully recovered and has fallen from a middle income country to one of the poorest in Europe. 14% of its population lives below the poverty line and a larger percentage are vulnerable to poverty due to volatile income shocks. These statistics are shocking even more so when you consider the fact that this country has been faced with widespread unemployment exceeding 44%. Life in Bosnia is far from easy and relief for thousands of Muslims is desperately needed.

Case StudyFood baskets were delivered to needy families living in the capital city of Bujumbura. Due to the high cost of living expenses, families were concerned as to how they would manage to afford proper Iftar and Sehri during the Holy Month of Ramadhan. The cash assistance received by way of Ramadhan Relief went a long way in assisting the families to meet these expense.

BackgroundThe Republic of Burundi is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of East Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.

Burundi is one of the five poorest countries in the world. It has one of the lowest per capita GDPs of any nation in the world. The country has suffered from warfare, corruption, poor access to education and the effects of HIV/AIDS. Burundi is densely populated and experiences substantial emigration.

Together with

its partner, The World Federation, UNRWA targets its basic food and cash assistance based on poverty surveys and best practice in poverty alleviation.

Case StudyWorking in partnership with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), The World Federation was able to provide food assistance during the month of Ramadhan to the most needy refugees who were unable to get the most basic of foods.

Ibrahim is a Palestine refugee living in Gaza. He has been a fisherman for all his adult life. The Israeli blockade on the coastal enclave in recent years has made it extremely difficult for him to support his family of 12. Ten years ago, there was a 12-mile limit on fishing; now it has been reduced to 6 miles. He said: “I am happy at sea and happy to be fishing. This is what I am good at - if only there was something to catch. It is very depressing when i go home empty handed.”

BackgroundFive years of blockade have pushed Gaza into unprecedented unemployment and poverty, decimated the private sector and left 80% of the population dependent on international assitance. The Gaza Strip is home to a population of more than 1.5 million people, including 1.1 million Palestine refugees. Food insecurity remains high in Gaza, with approximately 60% of the population food-insecure or vulnerable to food insecurity even after receiving assistance.

Case StudyThe state of the Muslim people in Haiti is dire as many are unemployed. Those who are suffering from illnesses, cannot afford health care. There are no government welfare programs to help those in need. This year’s Ramadhan Relief aid supported the most deserving including widows, orphans, the elderly and the unemployed.

BackgroundClimate change presents an array of difficult challenges for Haiti’s brawl against poverty. Haiti’s susceptibility to hurricanes, flooding and other natural disasters have devastated its development, crippled its economy, decimated its agricultural sector which is relied upon by many as a source of income. Haiti is regarded as the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and the World Bank estimates that 54% of the population lives on less than $1 a day, and a further 20% live on less than $2 a day.

We wish to

acknowledge and extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of the donors for your continued support.

BackgroundIndia’s economy is rapidly growing in both size and confidence. With a strong service sector and a positive outlook, India’s future is pleasing. Sadly, the future for over 25% of the people in India is bleak - all of whom struggle to survive on less than $0.40 a day.

The story of Jamal Malik portrayed in the movie Slumdog Millionaire is a feel good story if there ever was one, yet 29.8% of India’s poor are much less fortunate and are still shackled by poverty. The enormous pressures of absolute poverty force children as young as 5 to carry unbearable burdens and work in degrading and often dangerous jobs. Women tend to be worse off due to rampant gender inequalities.

The World Health Organization estimated that 49% of the world’s underweight children, 34% of the world’s stunted children and 46% of the world’s wasted children live in India. The United Nations also estimated that 4 children die every minute from preventable afflictions like diarrhea, measles and cholera which stalk the poor.

INDIABANGALOREMost of the Ramadhan Relief beneficiaries living in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are labourers, rickshaw pullers, widows, the handicapped, and families struggling financially. With rising food prices in the city and almost zero employment opportunities in the rural areas, life is far from easy in this region.

BIHARBihar is one of India’s most underpriviledged regions and The World Federation has been working here for well over 30 years. This Ramadhan, food baskets were delivered to struggling families, including seniors who have no family to care for them.

KUTCHKutch is a district in the Indian state of Gujarat. The region is a growing economic and industrial hub that is home to two major ports. Whilst financial prospects are much brighter here, poverty still lingers among segments of the population.

HYDERABAD Among those who received Ramadhan Relief to help pay for their medication were 3 individuals suffering from tooth cancer, lung cancer and diabetes, respectively. Finding work in Hyderabad is difficult and many families can barely afford even one meal per day here.

KOLKATA Like in Bangalore, the majority of the recipient families living in Kolkata live below the poverty line. These individuals are farmers, labourers, drivers, and rickshaw pullers. As well, many are unemployed.

Iraq facts

...27 people

a day have been killed since the beginning of July 2013...

BackgroundRamadhan Relief is a vital lifeline for many of Iraq’s impoverished who live in frustration as their land is one of the wealthiest whilst they remain the poorest. Nearly 5.6 million Iraqis live beneath the poverty line and many more are rendered food insecure as they live in hunger and in fear of starvation.

10 years on and still the Iraq war continues to haunt millions. Iraq’s crippled infrastructure coupled with lagging services means more than a third of households receive insufficient electricity and around 30% of the population do not have access to safe water.

With high rates of unemployment, weak governance and political division, instability remains along with fear and violence as the country continues to be swept by extremism. During 2012, 4,573 civilian deaths were recorded as a result of indiscriminate attacks and on average 27 people a day have been killed since the beginning of July 2013 in a wave of attacks targeting minority groups.

Fortunately, another truck stopped and the driver assisted them to get the vehicle fixed in time. This is an example of some of the hardships the volunteers face during Ramadhan Relief.

BackgroundMore than 15 million Kenyans do not have access to safe water or sanitation facilities. As well, 46% of Kenya’s population lives beneath the poverty line. Kenya is a country of rich ethnic diversity, however, it is also a country tormented by disease. With high prevalences of HIV/AIDS, malaria and intestinal worms, it’s no surprise that Kenya’s life expectancy is a mere 57 years of age.

With 79% of the population residing in rural areas, Kenya’s agricultural sector is heavily relied upon for financial security. However, persistent droughts in arid regions and erratic flooding in coastal regions threatens the livelihood of many families.

Case StudyAid was provided to a few Syrian refugee families in Lebanon. These families, like so many others were scared and vulnerable. The World Federation has been working with them to keep them safe, ensure that they have shelter, food, and other basic supplies.

Our team was supposed to provide aid to many more refugee families in Lebanon, unfortunately our volunteers were only able to safely reach 50 of these families. Heightened tensions and crimes posed increased threats to safety and security. Our refugee families were spread out across Lebanon, so reaching them under these circumstances safely and without attracting attention in a politically volatile environment was a major obstacle in our overall plan for the Ramadhan Relief Program in the region.

BackgroundSince the conflict in Syria started in 2011, innocent civilians have been caught in the middle of unrest and violence. Today, over 6 million people are displaced, most of whom have no jobs to generate income to survive on. According to the UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, 4.25 million Syrians are internally displaced and almost 1.9 million refugees have left Syria to save their lives. Many of these families have relocated to Lebanon where life is anything but easy. As more refugees enter the country from Syria, the pressures and strains of the Syrian crisis is taking its toll on Lebanon.

Case StudyOne of the food basket recipients in Myanmar was a woman in her mid 30’s who has 3 children and her elderly parents to care for. In March 2013 their hometown was terrorized by anti-Muslim aggressors and she and her family had to escape with no warning. Their home was looted and set on fire. Today, this family of 6 is living with relatives in an overcrowded residence.

Ramadhan

Relief focussed its efforts on easing the sufferings of the Muslim people who were forced out of their homes in the face of aggression.

Background26% of Myanmar’s population lives under the poverty line. The level of unemployment in Myanmar stands at a staggering 37% (according to 2012 records). To make matters worse, the security of the Muslim people in the country is at an all time low where so many people and homes have been attacked.

Case StudyZeba is a widow who has 3 daughters and one son. She is disabled. Her eldest daughter is 15 and looks after the household. Her 14 year old son works on a farm to help provide for the family. This year, they received a food basket to help make the month of Ramadhan a little easier.

Another beneficiary of Ramadhan Relief was an elderly lady who was a victim of a bomb blast in Quetta. Her house was burned down leaving a heap of stones and dust. Later that day, when she joined her community in mourning, rescuers found the body of a dead woman and wrapped in her arms was her baby. During the blast the mother died, but the baby survived. The elderly lady along with another male member of the village have taken custody of the baby.

BackgroundIn addition to Pakistan’s slow and gradual recovery from the 2010 floods, the country has faced an increase in targetted terror attacks, inflation and an energy crisis. For those families living away from urban areas, health care, unemployment and lack of clean water are major obstacles that block any hope of a better life.

BackgroundDespite the positive impact generated through the 2010 Fifa World Cup and the 2011 Rugby World Cup, South Africa continues to struggle in many ways. By taking a look at a universal problem such as that of poverty, we find South Africa in the midst of it all. According to the UN, more than half of South Africa’s children live in absolute poverty, with a reporter claiming that two thirds of this social problem could have been prevented with simple improvements in primary health care. One report states that roughly 1.4 million children rely on dirty streams of water and about 5 million adults and 330,000 children are infected with HIV, with roughly 40% dying from the disease annually.

BackgroundTwo years of unrest in the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria) has displaced 5 million people within Syria alone and has had a dramatic effect on one of the largest urban-refugee populations in the world. By the end of 2013, it is estimated that half the population of Syria will be in need of humanitarian assistance. This includes an anticipated 1.8 million more Syrians still inside the country, many of whom will be displaced from their homes. Countless Syrians have suffered terrible losses and witnessed so much violence. Many are living without food, shelter, healthcare and education.

BackgroundTanzania is a low-income country, ranking 152 out of 187 countries in the 2011 UNDP Human Development Index. 45% of Tanzania’s GDP is derived from agriculture and 80% of the population depends on subsistence agriculture for their livelihood, making it the country’s largest employment sector. In the last decade, Tanzania’s GDP has grown more than 6% annually. However, the increase has not translated to improved living standards for most ordinary Tanzanians. An additional burden on the population is rapidly rising inflation, driven mainly by food and fuel prices.

Tanzania is among the African countries with the highest levels of malnutrition. Some 42% of children under 5 are stunted, 8 out of 10 children under one are anaemic, and about a third of children aged 6–59 months are Vitamin A deficient. Poor nutrition is also a serious problem among women of reproductive age, with more than half of pregnant women anaemic and one in ten women undernourished.
