As Department Chairman, I am responsible for assisting hospital leadership align providers with strategies to improve care quality, patient access, and the patient experience across all care delivery sites. In addition, I am tasked to help develop and operationalize a more comprehensive and transparent Balanced Scorecard related to these efforts that can be applied across the care continuum for orthopedic patients. I am also responsible for representing the interests of orthopedic providers and our patients at the Medical Executive Committee level.

Achievements Engaged with stakeholders from the hospital, our ASC partner, and a transitional care provider to develop an

ACC campus for 72 hour stay surgical cases. This requires ongoing work with clinicians, both orthopedic and other surgical subspecialists, and non-clinicians in order to deliver a comprehensive care model for these patients, including the post-acute care piece. It also requires negotiations with payors in order to develop a bundled payment reimbursement model, which includes agreed upon quality and patient experience metrics.

Ongoing work with hospital administration, specifically the COO, to develop a formal Quality and Process Improvement program within the orthopedic department in order to further improve patient safety and the patient experience across all access points within the organization.

The hospital BOD functions as an advisory board by representing the needs of our community and our providers to our parent SCL organization. The BOD is responsible for monitoring the overall quality and safety performance within the organization, the development of an annual budget and capital request list, and efforts taken to meet the expectations of an annual system-wide Balanced Scorecard.

Achievements Worked closely with hospital administration and board members to build a coalition supportive of developing

an Ambulatory Care Campus on undeveloped property owned by SCL Health. The infrastructure is completed with possible ground-breaking to occur in 2017.

As a member of the Strategy and Business Development subcommittee, saw improvement in the activities within the employed physician enterprise along with acquisitions of cardiology, oncology, and neurosurgery services coupled with marketing activities that drove market share in our service areas above 50%.

Director, Orthopedic Service Line; St. Vincent Healthcare, Billings, MT 2011 – 2013

The orthopedic service line functions to bring stakeholders together from across the organization in order to more effectively deliver musculoskeletal care within our acute care facility. The service line is led by a physician director and a non-clinical administrator working in a dyad relationship. Additional members include representatives from nursing services, pharmacy, care management, supply chain resources, the hospitalist service, and the operating room.

Achievements Completed an 8 million dollar renovation of the orthopedic inpatient physical space, including an innovative

“hospital-within-hospital” model for delivering concierge care to patients requiring elective total joint arthroplasty and spine procedures.

Worked with an outside consulting group to elevate aggregate orthopedic HCAPHS scores from the 50th to above the 80th percentile.

Worked with our joint arthroplasty surgeons and supply chain director to standardize implant options and thereby drive implant costs well below the national median.

Acted as a physician champion for orthopedics during EPIC EHR implementation at St. Vincent Hospital Member, Medical Staff Quality Improvement Committee (MSQIC) which is responsible for peer review across

the organization.

President, Ortho Montana, PSC; Billings, MT 2011 – 2013

Ortho Montana is a single specialty orthopedic group comprised of 14 fellowship-trained physicians, one employed sports-medicine fellowship-trained family physician, 13 advanced practice providers, and 130 FTE staff members. We provide tertiary referral care for patients in central and eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and northern Wyoming. We are the largest musculoskeletal group between Minneapolis, MN, and Spokane, WA.

As group president, I had purview over all clinical and non-clinical services and activities. The organization experienced over 10,000 patient visits last year and had gross revenue of approximately $20,000,000.

Achievements Developed a dyad management model with our current CEO, which included weekly meetings along with

running a monthly BOD meeting and the responsibility for organizing an annual retreat. Oversaw the expansion of the group from 10 to 14 fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, including the

addition of a new service line around trauma surgery. This included assisting our CEO in the negotiation of a PSA for orthopedic trauma services and obtaining group reimbursement for trauma coverage.

Instrumental in developing an effective service line model for orthopedics at St. Vincent Hospital.

Lead physician in investigating, purchasing, and then implementing an EHR for the entire organization. Established an internal Compliance Committee. I remain the physician lead for the group compliance program.

Achievements Worked in conjunction with our CEO to develop all relevant policies pertaining to HIPAA, HITECH, Stark, and

ACA statutes. Responsible for performing annual provider chart reviews and giving feedback on coding performance. Developed a provider dashboard that is shared with physicians quarterly regarding their performance in

accurate coding and documentation. Developed a matrix for monitoring provider performance in chart completion and also instituting corrective

policies for poor performance, including financial penalties.

Achievements Acting member of a combined executive council along with members of a competing orthopedic group in order

to investigate the possibility of a group merger. The merger was successfully consummated in 2008 along with hiring our first CEO, forming a single-specialty private practice orthopedic group.

Ortho Montana, Billings, MT – Physician Member September 2003 – Present Ortho Montana is a multispecialty orthopedic practice in Billings, MT., which is dedicated to providing the highest quality subspecialty care in the region. The practice is comprised of fellowship-trained orthopedic and primary care physicians as well as physician extenders operating within a dedicated Center of Excellence model. Practice focuses on treatment of injuries or disorders affecting the hand, wrist, or elbow.

Provide both non-operative and operative care in most major orthopedic disciplines; on-site ancillary services, including MRI, PT, hand therapy, on-site surgery and an adjoining ASC, and an urgent care musculoskeletal center; and tertiary care for a three state region and parts of southern Canada.

Serve as clinical faculty in the Rocky Mountain Physician Assistant program, the Montana Family practice residency program, and the WAMI program that trains medical students through the University of Washington Medical School.
