HP IT and HP technology services collaborate to upgrade networks without downtime
Hewlett-Packard Co.
Problem Accommodate demands for higher performance and service agility while avoiding downtime during the transition via standards-based resilient network architecture
Solution
HP transformed all six data centre networks in under six months with zero downtime. In addition, the team upgraded and replaced over 30 mission-critical data circuits across the data center WAN at the same time. This combined capacity and circuit refresh and technology transformation required precise planning, orchestration of many teams, and change co-ordination for implementation
Results
• Increased support for 10 Gbps attached servers to allow for higher levels of network traffic • Reduced time to deploy new applications by 50% on average, saving IT staff time • Increased capability to support high-availability architectures and business continuity between data centers
through upgrade of inter-data-center beltway to 10G optical IP technology • Improves security and boosted PCI compliance by adding intrusion prevention • Cuts power utilisation by 70% using green technology • Supports more than 120 Gbps of Internet traffic, which offers faster internal communications and a better user
experience for shopping at HP.com • Significantly reduces infrastructure investment, maintenance, support, and overall total cost of ownership

Redes de Telecomunicación Galegas Retegal, Spain
Problem Galicia had the lowest rate of internet access in Spain. As this region grows over the last years in several sectors (textile, organic products, tourism, etc.) the objective was to raise rate of broadband Internet access in the region from 70 to 100 percent in four years
Solution • Installation of new switches in 40 locations, including many remote mountain stop sites (18 HP 8800 series routers
and 17 HP 7500 series switches) • Move from ATM network to MPLS-based infrastructure
Results
• Achieved region-wide standard of 10 gigabits/sec • Reduced cost of network operations • Region-wide broadband network for 2.8 million citizens of Galicia • Tremendous difference for education and economy in the region: possibility to fully participate in global and
European markets
