Last Week’s Vote on the REI Fee

“The Student Renewable Energy Fee is a five dollar per semester fee, assessed over a period of three years. This fee is used to fund the Renewable Energy Initiative (REI), which is a student lead organization tasked with reducing Appalachian’s consumption of fossil fuels and minimizing the University’s impact on the environment through renewable energy technologies including solar, wind, hydroelectric and biofuel. Do you approve of the continuation of the Student Renewable Energy Fee for a second three year period, beginning with the 2008-2009 school year and ending at the close of the 2010-2011 school year?”

Photovoltaic (PV)

• PV systems are solar energy systems that produce electricity directly from sunlight

• Costs in spring 2007:– Panels ~ $4.50 / Watt– Installed ~ $9 / Watt

• Last up to 50years

• Quiet & maintenance free

• Produce electricity with out fossil fuel

Raley Hall design

Project Description:• Install photovoltaic (PV) array on the on

the south facing side of Raley Hall, on the bank that separates the parking lot from Raley Hall. Estimate 30-40 panels, providing a 6kW rating.

• Emphasis will be placed on aesthetics, integrating with landscaping, and showcase ASU and PV.

Considerations

• Southern exposure• View from west side• Will NOT mount to

buildings• Landscaping

– Support from ASU landscaping

– Incorporate sculptures

• Need to make it attractive
