Dear Friend,

There is no greater success than to see every young person who walks through our doors, on track to graduate from high school, with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Although this single vision has driven Boys & Girls Clubs for over 50 years, the organization has grown, evolved, and matured in service to our county’s young people in the best ways possible. Each of the 50 years has had its own momentous achievements. Our 2016-17 fiscal year was no exception with accomplishments including:

• A first time Membership role of over 5,000 with 1,000 Children and Teens in our Clubs daily • Induction into the Raleigh Hall of Fame • National Merit Award for our “Mighty Milers” Program • Recognition in North Carolina for our “High Performance Board Team” • The DJF Builds Great Futures Show Case Home • And, a culminating Gala in celebration of our 50th Anniversary

All this and more continues to bring children and teens to our seven Clubs where they find supportive staff, fun, high quality programming around academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character development.

With your support and the dedication of our incredible Staff, Board, and Volunteers we will continue to improve the lives of Wake County’s children for another 50 years and beyond.

Thank you,

Tish Turner | CHAIR | 2017 Board of Directors

On February 16, 1966, Former Governor Terry Sanford, Jack Carter, James Reid, Peter Chenery, Jr., and Waymon Pritchard signed off on the Articles of Incorporation for the Boys Club of Wake County, Inc.

Fifty years to the day later, the organization hosted a luncheon in its newest Club, The Club Teen Center, to celebrate the founding and the successful conclusion of our $12 million BE THE ONE Capital Campaign. This luncheon, attended by former Board Members and their guests, current Board Members and their guests, widows of Board Members, and BE THE ONE Campaign donors and their guests, began a 14-month celebration of the organization’s 50 years of service to the Wake County community.

In October, Boys & Girls Clubs was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame, and the Umstead Hotel and Spa generously hosted a luncheon in honor of Boys & Girls Clubs’ 50 largest donors. Later in the month, our three Clubs on Raleigh Boulevard in Raleigh were collectively dedicated as the Ethridge Campus in honor of long-time supporter Bill Ethridge and the Ethridge Foundation.

The organization started serving youth on April 11, 1967 and the 50th Anniversary celebration culminated with a gala on May 6, 2017 featuring several alumni speakers of our organization including LeVelle Moton and Cameron Merrill, and other Boys & Girls Club alumni Gilbert Baez and Andre Reed.

The first of Boys & Girls Clubs’ three priority outcomes is ensuring that members graduate from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment. Youth Development Professionals lead conversations with members and develop a culture within the Club to indicate that academics are important. Furthermore, they offer opportunities inside and outside of the Club to spark interests and explore diverse experiences. From homework help, to tutoring programs, to book clubs and reading programs, to programs designed to combat summer learning loss, to workshops on public speaking, robotics, internet safety, to college tours and career days, Boys & Girls Clubs help youth be academically successful.

These programs and opportunities also help youth and teens develop their leadership skills as well as decision-making, planning and prioritizing, and contributing to their Club and community. Programs in this area include Million Members, Million Hours of Service; Torch and Keystone Clubs (leadership and community service clubs); and Youth of the Year programming.

Youth of the Year is a national recognition program that celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments of Club teens. The program starts local with each Club site working with candidates to complete the application essays, improve their public speaking and interview skills, and engage in community service projects as a group. Judges are recruited to interview candidates and select a Club-level and an overall winner who will represent the organization in the North Carolina Youth of the Year Celebration. Club members who earn the Youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership and service, academic excellence, and healthy lifestyles.

The Club finalists were all introduced to the community at our Annual Youth of the Year Luncheon. At the event, each told the audience about how their Boys & Girls Club has impacted their life. For the first time in its history, the event featured all female Club members. Club Alumni and 1995 Youth of the Year, Corey May, was the emcee of the event and shared that the Club taught him the importance of an education and working hard to achieve his goals.

Congratulations to all of our candidates and winners!

Boys & Girls Clubs led two fundraising events, and partnered with others in the community for additional fundraisers. Breakfast of Champions is Boys & Girls Clubs biggest event of the year and brings together some of Wake County’s most influential businesses and community leaders. This year’s event featured NCSU and NFL standouts, Terrence and Torry Holt, and two inductees in Boys & Girls Clubs Hall of Fame. Ralph Moore joined the organization’s Board of Directors in 1973 and served for 39 years, including a term as Board Chair when he was instrumental in opening the Club in Wake Forest. The William C. Ethridge Foundation continues the relationship that Boys & Girls Clubs began with Bill Ethridge nearly 30 years ago. The Foundation was the first $1,000,000 commitment to a single campaign led by our organization, which was the recent $12 million BE THE ONE capital campaign.

To properly celebrate the organization’s anniversary, a 50th Anniversary Gala was held in May at the Raleigh Convention Center. The Gala featured two alumni of our organization Cameron Merrill and LeVelle Moton. Also featured was Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s 1973 “Boy of the Year” and current WRAL reporter, Gilbert Baez. The keynote speech was delivered by NFL Hall of Fame football player Andre Reed, who is also an inductee in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Alumnus Hall of Fame. The Shakedown provided music for the dancing and festivities.

In the spring of 2015, Boys & Girls Clubs was approached by Dennis Fitzgerald and DJF Builders to bring a Showcase Home to the Raleigh community. The concept was to build a 6,000 square-foot home inside the Beltline with rooms decorated by 18 designers. Upon completion of construction and decoration, it would be opened up to the public for three weeks of tours and events.

The proceeds from all events, tours, and sponsorships would benefit Boys & Girls Clubs. Notable sponsors include Sherri Hagerty and Allen Tate Realty. DJF Builders also contributed proceeds from the sale of the home to Boys & Girls Clubs. To maximize proceeds, the DJF team secured over a dozen in-kind sponsors that supplied various building materials.

After 18 months of work, the home opened to the public in the spring of 2017. During three weeks of tours, over 2,000 people toured the home. Combined proceeds totaled over $400,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs.

Capitol Broadcasting Corporation has been a supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs for nearly 30 years. Adding to their generosity, their MIX 101.5 division has hosted an annual Christmas party for 100 Club members since 2012. At the party, toys are distributed to each member who may not otherwise receive a gift. In December of 2016, “Two Men and a Mom” Sarah King, Jon Camp and Bryan Lord set out to collect “1,000 Toys for Girls and Boys,” successfully collecting nearly 3,000 toys.

The Raleigh Elks Lodge #735 has also long been a supporter. This year, we offer a special thank you for their donation of a new scoreboard for the Raleigh Boys Club gym.
