Los parques y espacios naturales contribuyen a la salud medioambiental de Portland en muchas formas sustentadoras

de vida. Proveen y protegen los hábitats esenciales y

biológicamente diversos para los peces y la vida silvestre.

Los árboles y plantas nativas actúan como filtros naturales

que limpian nuestra agua, producen oxígeno y reducen la contaminación del aire. Los corredores de las vías verdes y arroyos son manejados para ofrecer actividades recreativas basadas en la naturaleza en un entorno urbano, así como para fomentar

la concientización sobre la importancia de la salud de los ecosistemas. Las áreas naturales como Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, Forest Park, Whitaker Ponds y Marquam Nature Park proporcionan

importantes conexiones de vías verdes para la fauna y para realizar actividades como ir de caminata, el senderismo, el ciclismo, andar en canoa y estudiar la naturaleza - todas las cuales

son excelentes para el desarrollo de una mente, cuerpo y espíritu sanos.

Ya que los parques urbanos y las instalaciones de recreación son los espacios democráticos de una ciudad en donde las comunidades pueden encontrarse para expresar sus identidades, estos espacios son entornos importantes para presentar y proporcionar un lugar vital para la expresión cultural. Las instalaciones y programas recreativos ofrecen oportunidades de aprendizaje continuo para las personas de todas las edades a un precio asequible - de las artes visuales a las artes marciales, y de la música a obtener ayuda con la tarea escolar. Los espacios y programas recreativos multiculturales y multigeneracionales de los parques de Portland disminuyan las brechas entre los vecindarios y crean “familias extendidas” que se juntan por una variedad de razones.

• Ofrecemos más de 18,000 clases y actividades anualmente en 14 centros comunitarios y de arte por toda la ciudad de Portland.

• Cada año, PP&R ofrece casi 370,000 lecciones de natación en nuestras 13 albercas dentro de instalaciones y al aire libre.

La División de Silvicultura urbana (Urban Forestry) supervisa el cuidado y la conservación de 1.2 millones de árboles en los parques y áreas naturales de Portland, y de más de 230,000 árboles que se encuentran a lo largo de nuestras calles y realzan nuestros vecindarios. Los árboles adornan nuestro mundo y dan vitalidad a una ciudad porque proporcionan aire limpio, controlan las aguas pluviales, ahorran energía y embellecen nuestros alrededores.
