Q: So, what exactly is STEAM Camp? Fair question. Our camp will introduce participants to potential careers within
Science, Technology, Engineering Art and Mathematics
Campers will learn about educational decisions that will prepare them for these careers. We will also focus on how
these careers often require similar, overlapping skills. This is a connected educational approach designed to share a
well-rounded experience.
Q: Who will be attending STEAM Camp?Middle school students presented by the Urban League of Greater Madison, Girl Scouts of Badgerland Wisconsin
and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Dane County. This will be a constructive and collaborative experience. Campers will
discover together how to explore these exciting careers.
Q: How does STEAM Camp work? Our program runs for five consecutive days, June 26-30. The day begins with informal presentations which introduce
campers to people who work within STEAM disciplines. The goal is to give our campers a realistic, interactive and fun
look at these careers.
Lunch will be provided, then demonstrations and a behind-the-scenes, hands-on experience working within STEAM.
Camp attendees will gather at 8:00AM each day at the Urban League Office and return to the Urban League at
approximately 5:00PM each evening.
Q: How much does it cost to attend STEAM Camp?Nothing. Zero. Zip. We only ask our campers make an investment of time – show up every day on time, ready to
participate, learn and have fun. We promise, it will be well worth your time.

MORNING AFTERNOON
WEBSITE DESIGN @ ZENDESK
Our STEAM Camp students begin their week at the
Madison offices of Zendesk, a global company offering
web-based “help desk” software for handling customer
service issues.
Students will meet and interact with Zendesk staff
members to learn about software development and
website design and construction. Students will put
their new-found creative and digital skills together and
design individual websites.
CHIBITRONICS
CIRCUIT ART +
OZOBOTS ROBOTIC
PROGRAMMING
One of our STEAM
Camp’s key missions is
to create innovative
ways to play, learn and socially interact in an expanding
digital world. Students using Ozobots are learning
sequential thinking, logical reasoning and coding
concepts. These critical life skills enable students from
all walks of life to succeed in the future digital age.
Our students learn how to channel their ideas into
reality, creating private games, secret codes and
their very own robotic equations, putting them at the
forefront of learning without even realizing it. When
playing digital apps with a physical toy, it bridges the
gap between the physical and digital realm - creating a
whole new world of educational play.
Such activities help us present an innovative way to
teach subjects like programming, math and science in
classrooms. Kids become engaged and inspired lifelong
learners when topics come alive.

MORNING AFTERNOON
CAREERS IN HEALTHCARE @ UW HEALTH
Did you know there are hundreds of different careers
available in healthcare? From nurses and doctors
to chefs and administrators, the possibilities are
endless. UW Health is excited to partner with Strang’s
STEAM Camp to provide students an opportunity
to see various careers in healthcare through fun
and educational presentations, tours and hands-on
activities
ZOETHICA
Peter Krsko creates collaborative and community
public art, such as sculptures and murals, inspired
by biological concepts of diversity, differentiation,
participation and co-ownership. His sculptural
installations mimic natural structures and forms as
well as the dynamics and laws of interactions among
members of the ecosystems. Peter is the artist in
residence @ UW-Madison Arts Institute.
Students will engage in a hands-on study of the
natural world. Krsko will guide students to observe
natural materials, organisms and systems at micro-,
meso- and macroscopic levels. During this process,
students will analyze artistic and scientific approaches
to studying nature and develop novel materials and
systems based on natural concepts.

MORNING AFTERNOON
FINANCIAL LITERACY WITH SUMMIT CREDIT UNION
Campers will spend the morning at Summit Credit
Union’s Inspiration Branch located in Fitchburg, WI. The
branch is a 3-D visualization of various dreams and
goals meant to inspire and motivate people to action.
After a tour, campers will step into their futures
and participate in a Mad City Money simulation.
After receiving a job, income and a family, campers
will choose housing, transportation, food, household
necessities, clothing, and other wants and needs.
The challenge – to stay within their income when the
pressures of student loans, credit card debt and
saving their money factor in.
DISCOVERIES IN THE LAB @ PROMEGA
Our campers travel to the BioPharmaceutical
Technology Center for hands-on laboratory
experiments based on molecular biology techniques.
After a 30-minute slide show about bioluminescence,
students go into the laboratory to perform a
simulated genetic transformation, which transfers the
luciferase gene, and the ability to make bioluminescent
light, into bacterial cells.
Key topics:
» Bioluminescence
» DNA and genetic transformation
» Bacteria and sterile technique
Students are reminded to wear close-toed shoes and have covered
legs (pants or long skirts, not shorts or short skirts).

DISCOVER ENERGY!!
Students will learn about the world of energy and energy career
opportunities through a variety of presentations and hands on work.
Campers will learn how MGE keeps the lights on and the natural gas flowing
to our community. What is the role of renewable energy now and in the
future? Students will have an opportunity to work in teams to build a working
wind turbine and then compete in friendly competition to see which design
can do the most work. We’ll explore how new electric vehicle technology is
changing the way we drive and how it impacts the electricity grid.
Students will get a behind the scenes look at how MGE manages and controls
the electric wires and gas pipeline system in the Distribution Operations
Center.
Have you ever toured an electric generating station to see where electricity
is made? Hold on to your hard hats! Students will the tour of the Blount
Generating Station, one of Madison’s oldest electric generating facilities and
see how electricity is made.
Training today’s electric and natural gas employees is a huge job with
changing technology and maintaining a safe work environment. You’ll see
firsthand MGE’s new Training Station and some of the unique equipment we
use to do our jobs.

TREK BICYCLE
Bicycles have not been immune to the explosion in technological
advancement, and Trek has been at the forefront of the movement,
continually challenging the limits of the bicycle’s capability.
This, our final day of camp, is going to be really fun. Our friends at TREK
have generously invited Strang’s STEAM Camp in for a behind-the-scenes
look. From TREK’s fastest hand-built carbon race machines to their refined
aluminum models, our campers will explore TREK’s relentless technical
innovations and learn how bicycle design, testing and manufacturing come
together to create the world’s best bicycle.
