LOOSE DOGSAll throughout the neighborhood there are good people who find loose dogs and are wondering what to do. If you call a shelter, they are sure to be put to death in three days, so no one wants to do that.

A simple way to make sure your dog isn’t in that category is too buy a collar and put an engraved tag on it with your phone number on it. It’s about a fifteen dollar investment, but well worth it. So if you can’t be responsible with your dogs, at least put a collar and tag on them, so all of the pet lovers out there can do what’s right and can call you.

TExaS ParkinG LawWe have received numerous complaints regarding vehicles, trailers and other items parked on the streets. As neighbors we must adhere to state law as follows:

• Vehicles parked on street must show valid current registration & inspection• 30 feet from stop sign• 20 feet from cross walk• 18” from curb – parallel to curb, turned toward curb, car locked• WITH the traffic direction• No more than 48 hours on a public street – sticker after 48 hours/tow after additional 48 hours• No parking on the sidewalks (except where sidewalk crosses driveway)• 15 feet from fire hydrant• Cannot obstruct another’s driveway

Let’s be mindful to not park in front of a fellow neighbor’s home and mailbox. If you own a boat, trailer and other vehicles our streets should not be treated as an extension of your driveway. We encourage you to not keep such vehicles parked on our public streets

for extended periods. Some residential streets become more like an obstacle course and creating blind spots while driving through the neighborhood. More importantly, parking on some residential streets can make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to service our area.

HarriS COunTy LEaSH LawAnimals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances:1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for

HONORING OUR MILITARYI’m sure we have active and retired military either living in our community or some of you may have family members in active service. In preparation of our July issues (Fourth of July) as well as November issues (Recognition of Veterans Day); those two issues will acknowledge the sacrifice of such individuals in their service for our country. Please provide the individuals name, military branch and years of service to Walonda Hollins at [email protected].

RESIDENTIAL ADDRESSA number of our residential homes need to ensure the address clearly visible and not obstructed by plants or other items. If you or someone in your home requires emergency attention, the lack of a visible address may result in delayed assistance. Reflective numbering on the curb nearest the driveway is considered the most effective. Many of the newer homes have the address located on the homes under an external light. If this is the case, it’s critical to ensure the address is not obstructed by plants.

tRasH PickuP seRVicesRoyal Waste Management encourages residents to call in complaints regarding trash pickup. The crews are participating in a competition whereby the best crew receives a cash bonus at yearend. All complaints are taken seriously and posted internally for all crews to view. Additionally, the crew suffers deductions for each complaint.

If you have a complaint regarding the trash service, contact Charles Gregory (Operations Manager) at 713-526-1536.

Let’s be mindful that as residents, we must do our part by placing waste in trash bags. If you can’t lift the bag or trash receptacle it’s too full. You should consider breaking up your trash into more bags. We encourage you to remove all trash receptacles from curbside before

you retire in the evenings. Additionally, the crew cannot pickup paint and other hazardous materials. You must take such items either to a Harris County or City of Houston hazardous waste dumpsite.

stReetligHtsWe want all of our streetlights to work. A lighted area is a safer area. If a streetlight is out in your area, please go to www.centerpointenergy.com and report it. Once on the website, click on “electricity” then” residential.” On the left side, you should click on “report a streetlight outage” to enter the required information. Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number, closest street address, contact information, an email address and the number of street lights you would like to report.

Planting the Right tRee in the Right Place

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way.

Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected.

If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.

CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk.

Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs.

The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO™ COOKS UP HOUSTON’S HOT SUMMER BREAK™ BENEFITS ANNUAL EVENT

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today announced the launch of a new summer festival, benefiting the Show and allowing Houstonians an enjoyable, refreshing and entertaining break from the city’s summer heat.

Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. Held completely inside Reliant Center, the summer event includes cooking demonstrations, a beer brewing competition, wine and liquor seminars and the search for Houston’s best cocktail, margarita and martini. Patrons also can explore both floors of Reliant Center to listen and dance to live concerts featuring country, blues and jazz music, along with disc jockeys playing a mix of club music.

“We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!”

Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will directly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283 million to the youth of Texas. The 2012 Show runs Feb. 28th - March 18th. For tickets and more information, visit www.rodeohouston.com.
