Spider monkeys in their habitat

◦Spider monkeys live in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America from Mexico to Brazil

◦They live high in the tree in the upper canopy away from predators and near their food

◦They eat fruit from the trees that they pick

◦Spider monkeys live in medium groups called troups

◦Diurnal means they are awake during the day and asleep at night, like humans! (Sometimes!)

• LONG LIMBS

• GLOSSY HAIR

• PREHENSILE TAIL (grippy!)

• NO THUMBS

• CAN GROW TO 5 FEET IN HEIGHT (taller than me!)

• WEIGH AVERAGE 10kg

We need to protect them!THE NUMBER OF SPIDER MONKEYS IS DECREASING BECAUSE OF HABITAT LOSS, DEFORESTATION, PET TRADE AND HUNTING (INDIGENOUS PEOPLE EAT THE MEAT OF THE MONKEYS.

THE BLACK HEADED SPIDER MONKEY, WOOLY SPIDER MONKEY AND THE BROWN SPIDER MONKEY ARE ALL LISTED AS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES.

• THEY MATE AT THE AGE OF 4-5

• MUMMY SPIDER MONKEYS HAVE BABIES EVERY 4-5 YEARS

• PREGANCY LASTS 7 MONTHS

• MUMMIES CARRY THEIR BABIES ON THEIR BELLY FOR 4-5 MONTHS

• BABIES FEED OFF THEIR MUMMIES MILK FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS

• THEY LIVE UP TO 25 YEARS OLD!

• THEY ARE SOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!
