Welcome to our 22nd Annual Bull Sale. We are very happy to have Ralph Retzlaff and family joining us again this year. We have developed our herd using top AI genetics and walking herd sires. There is a selection in this sale for everyone, whether you are looking for a performance bull or a calving ease bull. All the bulls will have been earnotch tested for BVD. If you read Dr. Rob stables notes on this disease I think you will understand how important it is to buy a bull that has tested negative for this disease. This year we are vaccinating the bulls with Fusegard. They will get their first shot when we semen test and their booster shot just before delivery. I think this vaccine offers valuable protection against footrot. I would encourage everyone to go to the Simmental and Charolais websites and look up any bulls on offer to obtain more information on them. Both of these associations have powerful tools for the cattleman to take advantage of. We truly appreciate Bouchard Livestock’s involvement with us again this year. Brian has been through the bulls and can offer you professional advice, whether it be order buying or an honest opinion on any of the bulls. So please don’t hesitate to call him or any of the sales staff a call. We are using DLMS again this year so if you can’t make it to the sale please register and take advantage of this service. We will offer free delivery within a 150 mile radius of the sale and at cost after that. However, if you wish to take your bull home from the sale we will take $70 off the purchase price. Otherwise bulls will be delivered sometime after the first of April. Bulls must be insured if they come back to Rainalta. We look forward to seeing you on February 23rd at Bow Slope. We all understand that crossbreeding can add profitability to a cattle operation and that the CharX calves continue to be sought after by the feedlots. When making our breeding decisions for our Charolais cows we try to balance extra performance with acceptable calving ease. We are confident that you will be able to find a bull that will suit your operation. We are certainly happy to take the bulls you purchase back home and arrange delivery before you need them, but since we keep your purchase at your risk we do suggest that the bulls be insured. Health & FertilityAll bulls will have a scrotal measurement and a vet examination done prior to the sale. All bulls over 12 months of age will also be semen tested. These bulls will be delivered once a semn test has been passed. All bulls have been treated with Ivomec and have current vaccinations. Contact the breeder for specific herd health programs.

Sight Unseen Purchase ProgramIf you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in bulls, give the consignors or Brian Bouchard a call and they will personally go over the bulls and your program and recommend bulls that would meet your needs. We will represent your needs in a professional and confidential manner.

EPD ExplanationEPD’s are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with is averaged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across cattle breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.

BVD TestingBuying bulls that are tested negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD into your herd with your herdsire purchases. All the Simmental & Charolais bulls in this sale have been ear-notch tested negative for BVD.

We sold the Double Down bull to Bone Creek Ranch at East End, Sask in our 2013 sale. Graham let us use him on a few cows. BVD DR ROB STABLES, BOW VALLEY VETERINARY CLINIC LTD

Bovine Viral Diarrhea, or BVD, is an important disease in cattle. The prevalence of incidence of the disease is relatively low, but if you happen to have it in your herd it can lead to a host of problems. BVD is a complicated disease that can show up as stillbirths or deformed calves, late-term abortions, early embryonic death (early pregnancies are resorbed), Persistently Infected animals (PI animals), or increased incidence of other diseases such as scours, or pneumonia outbreaks that are difficult to resolve. The major reservoir of virus is the Persistently Infected animal. This animal was infected by the virus between 50 and 150 days of gestation. The immune system believes that the virus is a normal part of the body so it is infected for life, in fact, every cell in the animal’s body becomes a virus factory, releasing large amounts of virus into the environment (such as water bowls, feed troughs, etc). Over 50% of PI animals die by 12 to 18 months of age, and probably 90% are dead by 24 months. The PI animal that sheds mil-lions of virus particles daily is a threat to herd mates because the virus suppresses the immune system making them more suscep-tible to other diseases. This is where the greatest economic losses occur. Vaccination against BVD will not eradicate it from your herd if it is present (vaccine has no effect on the PI animal), but will help to minimize some of the effects. Taking ear notch samples and testing for BVD is the only way to prove an animal is not a PI. Testing and vaccination work together. Buying bulls that are tested PI negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD in with your herdsire purchases. SALE TERMS & CONDITIONSThe terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. The owners, Bouchard Livestock Ltd. and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made prior credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or Sale Management.BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.DISPUTES - In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - The proper Registration of Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but Sale Management or Seller assumes no risk. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instruction when making settlement.GUARANTEE - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal.EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian breed Association guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze.HEALTH - It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province or state. Bouchard Livestock Ltd assumes no responsibility for the health status of any animal in the sale.ACCIDENTS - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sale Management, auctioneer, or Association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property.RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS - The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both.
