King Sejong and Prince Munjong and of Korea invented it in 1441.

King Sejong was trying to improve agricultural technology for his subjects. So he could give them better food and clothes.

While he did that he helped develop Astronomy and Meteorology.

Made a calendar for the Korean people and ordered the development of an accurate clock.

He also used this tool to measure the taxes for farmers.

Prince Munjong claimed that his father had created a rain gauge while measuring rainfall at the palace.

Munjong said instead of digging into the ground from now on they would use a standardized container to measure rain.

These two men made this rain gauge 200 years before Christopher Wren a rain gauge in Europe. The tipping bucket one in 1662.

Definition: a instrument used to measure rainfall

The rainfall goes into a funnel then falls into a measurement device.

They can record rainfall and predict how much rains falls per hour. Then it can help farmers to predict how much rainfall will fall the next storm. Then their crops will grow faster.

FUNCTION

Page 5: Rain gauge pd.5

They are made of plastic and metals. There look different ways according to the

models. The tipping bucket gauge looks like a bucket with an electric stand thing that measures water.

The standard gauge looks like a big cylinder with a stand.

The fence post stand looks like metal see through triangle nailed to the fence post.

LOOKS AND MATERIALS

1. The Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge- These gauges are used by Nation Weather Services.- This rain gauge can be reed by satellites.- This gauge records the rainfall by remote control.

TYPES OF RAIN GAUGES

2. The Standard Rain Gauge- The capacity of the Standard Rain Gauge is 2 inches.- When the receiver measures 10 inches there has been actually 1 inch of rainfall.- The upper part of the rain gauge is a funnel that puts the rain to the receiver. Extra rain the receiver can hold empties into an outer chamber.- To measure the total rainfall the rain in the chamber is put into the empty receiver, then measured, and calculated.

3. Fence Post Rain Gauge- They are made from plastic.- They are mounted on a fence post with screws.- It measures up to 1 inch of rainfall in the receiver. Then access rain is released into an outer chamber.- They also can measure snowfall.

TYPES OF RAIN GAUGES

Light rainfall rains about .10 inches an hour.Moderate rainfall has about .10 to .30 inches

of rainfall per hour.Heavy rainfall has about more than .30 inches

an hourPlacement is important for recording. Stay

away from branches, eaves, and don’t put it on the roof.

They have also been put into different designs.
