    T h e v a l v e o p e n s w h e n i t r ec e i v es a s i gn a l f r o m t h e

    controller, and the sprinklers connected to the valveturn on. When these sprinklers have run for their allotted time, the controller shuts off the valve andopens the next valve in sequence.

    For example, the illustration shows that station 1 isc u r r en t l y w a t er i n g .

    When station 1 is finished, the controller will shut itoff and start station 2.

    In the same way, station 3 will begin watering whenstation 2 is finished.

    The ESP-TM series controllers have a backup, or default,

    program that takes over if your program is lost because of anextended power outage.

    Enter a brief description of each station onthe controller.

    In the Program A column, circle the WateringDays schedule. Either choose one of the "FixedDay Cycle" intervals, or choose the desiredw a t e ri n g d a y s i n t h e " C us t o m D ay C y c l e" r o w.

    To use a fixed schedule, move the Schedule SlideSwitch to one of the FIXED positions:

    The ESP-TM has two types of watering schedules, either fixedor custom. The fixed schedule sets watering to occur everysecond, third, or fifth day. The custom schedule lets you selects p ec i fi c d a ys o f t h e w ee k o n w h ic h w a te r in g i s t o o c cu r.

    Setting the current day varies somewhat depending onwhether you are using a custom schedule or a fixedschedule.

    Turn the dial to "DAY."

    The display shows "1" for the first day of the wateringcycle. Day 1 is always the watering day.

    The program that is currently selected appears in thef a r l e f t c o r ne r o f t h e d i s p la y. T h e d i s p la y w i l l s h o weither "PGM A" or "PGM B."

    The ESP-TM controller has two programs, A and B. Eachprogram operates independently.

    If you are using the custom watering schedule, eachprogram can have different watering days. For example,Program A might run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday;Program B on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

    If you are using a fixed watering schedule, both programswill have the same "ON" days. For example, if you areusing the three-day fixed schedule, Program A andP r o g ra m B w i l l b o t h r un e v e r y th i r d d ay.

    You can assign any station to Program A, Program B, or both.

    The display shows the selected station and its runtime. If you are programming the controller for the

    Turn the dial to 1 in the "Watering Start Times"section.

    Each program on the ESP-TM can have up to threewatering start times, which tell the controller when tobegin the watering program. The start time applies to allwatering days for that program.

    If you want to water more than once a day, you can set

    the second and third watering start times. For example, if you are growing new lawn seed, you might want to water several times a day. To do so, you could set a program torun at 6:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 4:00 PM.

    At this point, you may:

    Set the controller to automatic operation, asdescribed on page 19.

    4 Press or to change the start time. The time settingmoves forward or backward in 15-minute increments.

    To eliminate a start time, press or until the blanksetting between 11:45 PM and 12:15 AM appears.

    If you forget to turn the dial to AUTO, the controller willeventually set itself to automatic operation. The onlys e t t in g t h a t p r e v en t s a u t o ma t i c o p er a t i o n i s O F F ( s e estep 2).

    The Water Budget feature on the ESP-TM lets youi n c r ea s e o r d e cr e a s e t he r u n t i m es o f a l l s t a t io n s b y as e l e ct e d p e r c en t a g e. Yo u m a y a d j u st t h e r u n t i m e s a s l o was 10 percent and as high as 200 percent. Adjustmentsmust be made in increments of 10 percentage points.

    The percentages are calculated on the normalprogrammed run times for each station. For example, if astation is programmed to run for 10 minutes, and you setthe water budget percent to 80%, the station will run for 8minutes (80% of 10 minutes). If you set the water budgett o 1 2 0 %, t h a t s a m e st a t i on w i l l r u n f o r 1 2 m in u t e s ( 1 2 0 %of 10 minutes).

    The water budget feature can be useful for cutting backwatering during cool winter months, or for increasing

    w a t e ri n g d u r in g p e r i o ds o f u n u s u al h e a t . K ee p i n m i n dthat the percentage you set applies to ALL s t at i on s o nBOTH programs.

    The ESP-TM controller has a built-in test program thatwill run each station in sequence for two minutes. Youcan use this program to check out the operation of allthe sprinklers in the system.

    To replace the battery, pull out the battery drawer a n d r e m o ve t h e o l d b a t t e ry. I n s t a ll a n e w 3 - Vo l tlithium coin cell battery in the drawer. Then closethe drawer.

    The ESP-TM controller features a battery backup, whichw i l l p r e s er v e t h e c o n tr o l l er ' s p r o g ra m i n t h e e v e n t o f apower failure. Under normal conditions, the lithiumb a t t er y w i l l l a s t w el l o v e r a y ea r. F o r m a xi m u m pr o t e ct i o nagainst loss of programming data, Rain Bird recommendst h a t y o u r e pl a c e t h e l i th i u m c o in c e l l b a t t e ry o n c e a y e a r.

    In addition, if a short circuit occurs in the sprinkler system,you may have to replace the fuse.

    If the ESP-TM fuse should blow, check for shortcircuits in the valve solenoids or field wiring. (For more information, see the Troubleshooting sectiono n p a g e 3 6 .) C o r r ec t a n y p r o b le m s b e f o r e re p l a ci n gthe fuse.

    To replace a blown fuse, remove the old fuse fromthe clips, and replace it with a 0.5-AMP, 250-VoltF AS T B L O f u s e .

    ESP-TM controllers are designed for indoor mountingonly. For best results, mount the controller at eye level.

    Mount the controller so that a 117-Volt AC power outletis within five feet of the controller so the wires from the

    Wires connected to the flip strip should be stripped toexpose 1/2" of conductor at the end. Do NOT use wireslarger than 16 gauge. Wires smaller than 18 gauge

    should be doubled over before being inserted into theflip strip.

    To connect field wires, raise the flip strip lever to theopen position. Insert the stripped wire into the roundhole beneath the lever. Then lower the flip strip lever togrip the wire.

    Tug gently on each wire to make sure it's securelyconnected.

    The "flip strip" connector, shown in this illustration,allows fast and easy connection of field wires.

    The ESP-TM controller is factory-supplied with a 3-Voltlithium coin cell backup battery, which is wrapped in a

    protective insulator strip in the battery drawer. This batteryis designed to maintain program information for severaldays without power.

    Make sure battery drawer is completely closed, then reinstallthe lower face panel. See page 25 for complete instructions.

    If your transformer has just two wires go to step 2.If not, connect the green ground wire (which is thelongest wire) to the ground screw located just belowand to the right of the lower wall mounting screw.

    Connect one pre-stripped transformer wire to eachof the flip strip terminals labeled 24VAC. Connect

    Slide the wiring skirt into its slot beneath the flip stripconnector.

    If you've used 3/4" PVC conduit to route the field wiring,you can route the transformer wires out of the side of theskirt by breaking out a small notch in the skirt with a pair

    of needle-nose pliers. See the illustration.

    Secure the wiring skirt to the wall with two of the screwsprovided.

    Snap the lower controller cover back into position.
