Church Avenue Interlocking Signal ModernizationBrooklyn, NY

Electrician Al Barisano installs rack-to-rack wiring at the central instru-mentation room (CIR) for the Church Avenue interlocking. N.Y. Transit, comprised of L.K. Comstock & Co. and RailWorks Transit, is installing a new, modern, relay-based signal system and constructing track and enclosures for the new interlocking. Project Director John Hamilton and General Foreman Frank DeLuca are leading this project, which is scheduled to be completed in August 2014.

No. 7 Line Extension Manhattan, NY

L.K. Comstock & Co. installed more than 350,000 linear feet of fiber reinforced epoxy (FRE) conduits for traction power and signal and com-munication cabling in duct benches. After installation the conduits and duct benches will be encased in concrete along the tunnel walls for the No. 7 Line Extension. RailWorks is working in a joint venture with Skanska to furnish and install finishes and systems on the subway extension from Times Square to West 25th Street and 11th Avenue in Manhattan. RailWorks Transit and L.K. Comstock are working in the running tunnels to install a new signal system, traction power, track and plumbing. Project Director Joe Maikisch and General Foreman Thomas Tinebra are leading the project, which is scheduled to be completed in mid-2014.

Flushing CBTCQueens, NY

To upgrade the signal system on the Flushing Line, N.Y. Transit, comprised of L.K. Comstock & Co. and RailWorks Transit, is installing communications-based train control (CBTC) throughout the Flushing Line. The contract also includes installing one new solid state interlocking, one new conventional interlocking, updating the signal power, security and fire alarm systems throughout the line and constructing new enclosures and rooms. They also are performing all track work and provid-ing HVAC for all new and renovated rooms. Project Director Dave Lozipone, General Foreman Peter O’Malley, Civil Project Manager John McLaughlin, Civil Foreman Joseph Ferentini and Track Foreman Courtney Davis are leading the project. Using a 400-ton hybrid crane, N.Y Transit positioned two, 50,000-pound sections of the prefabricated central instrument room (CIR) onto the elevated structure at one of the highest points on the Flushing CBTC project in Queens. Using a prefabricated, lighter-weight CIR saved time and money by reducing service delays by more than half the original plan.

GCRTA Grade Crossing RehabilitationCleveland, OH

RailWorks Track Services crews from the North Jackson, Ohio, office completed the first phase of grade crossing rehabilitation for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA). They worked on the light rail system during seven weekend outages to remove and rebuild eight crossings, including these two near the South Woodland station in Cleveland/Shaker Heights. RailWorks served as general contractor on the project, valued at over $2 million, upgrading full-depth rubber style crossings with a StarTrack® concrete panel design to facilitate smoother travel and crossing longevity. Project Manager Jim Ryhal sent this image of rebuilt crossing. Sean Gleydura serves as the on-site superintendent.

American MillingCahokia, IL

Laborers (l to r) Paul Shinabarger, Justin Miller, Brandon Smith and Josh Hannah fasten the rail to the ties using e-clip fasteners and a walk behind e-clip machine. They are part of the crews from the Bridgeton office who are busy at work on a multi-million-dollar project at American Milling, located on the Mississippi River in Illinois across from downtown St. Louis, Mo. Using concrete ties, crews are constructing 21,756 feet of track to support a new coal-loading facility connected by both rail and barge. Led by Project Manager Buddy Smith, work is scheduled to wrap up shortly after Labor Day.

ItalgraniSt. Louis, MO

Under the direction of Project Manager Marshall Latham, the Bridgeton of-fice just completed construction of a multi-million-dollar project for Italgrani USA in St. Louis, Mo. Crews constructed 10,248 feet of track, comprised of six ladder tracks, three crossovers and 16 turnouts. The semolina mill and grain elevator complex, located on the Mississippi River, ships a variety of grain products. The track expansion enables Italgrani to receive unit grain trains and move outbound product more efficiently.

Montana Refining Company Capacity ExpansionGreat Falls, MT

RailWorks constructed a 40-car storage line and 10-spot loading line for Montana Refining at its oil facility in Great Falls, Mont. Tim Heitzman, Project Supervisor, led the onsite work, which will expand car storage capacity (in turn reducing demurrage fees incurred from offsite stor-age) as the company prepares for increased rail ship-ments. Here, RailWorks installs the main turnout for the new track.

Union Pacific Railroad Glidden Subdivision Siding ExtensionEngle, TX

Project Manager Wes Tuhowski sent this image of a RailWorks Track Systems crew out of the Houston division office unloading ties from rail cars. RailWorks is contracting to Tug Hill Construction on this project for Union Pacific Railroad. At the start of the job in July, employees unload some of the 5,000 concrete ties they are installing on a new siding extension for UP. RailWorks provided the labor and equipment to unload the ties in UP’s Flatonia, Texas, rail yard and transported them to the new siding extension in Engle. The project, valued at more than $400,000, is to wrap in September.

United Grain Corporation Loadout FacilityConrad, MT

In a job for United Grain, RailWorks Track Systems Project Superintendent Tim Heitzman, who submitted this photo, and Operator Josh White distribute and space concrete ties. Their work preceded the August start of switch construction and the laying of 11,000 feet of rail. This RailWorks project is part of a new, mil-lion-bushel-capacity grain elevator that will feature a rail loadout facility. The region’s wheat is bound for dry bulk marine terminals in the Pacific Northwest, for export to Asian markets
