worthwhile jobs for Harlowresidents and Harlow town itself?

Some of the recycling answersmay be helped by localsupermarkets reducing theirover packaging.

    S Sadler,Mallows Green, Harlow

Rail miserySIR For the second successiveweek our local commuters havebeen made to pay the price of thevery unreasonable demands of some extremist union memberswith political agendas.

At a time of economic declinethose people in the Harlow andEpping Forest areas who rely onNational Express East Anglia toget to work are being held toransom thanks to the behaviourof the unions.

Sadly many people are feelingthe effects of the recession andcredit crunch. Many people havelost their jobs. Such is thecurrent situation that the bulk of our workforces are just gratefulto be employed.

But here we have rail unionmembers taking industrialaction which is making life amisery for those people who haveto use the mainline service to goabout their daily lives.

It is a regrettable situation butthere have been many job lossesin the country, and much closerto home, and I am sure many of the losses were the result of compulsory redundancies.

That, I am afraid, is the statewe find our country in at themoment but there must be betterways, Mr Crow [Bob Crow, RMTgeneral secretary], of managing

the situation instead of causingunnecessary suffering to themany people who when able toget to work are helping to pay thewages of union members throughever-increasing ticket prices.

The rail union members whose jobs may be under threat are nota special case. Other professionsand trades have seen job lossesin recent months, and therecould well be more to come.

Any job loss is regrettable butthe ongoing industrial action bythe rail members will not earnthe rail unions public support.

In fact if people findalternative ways to get to work with many last week and theweek before opting for theLondon Underground instead there could be another reasonsoon why rail jobs are being lost.

Robert Halfon, Conservativecandidate MP for Harlow

Move overSIR In reply to Barry Beaton(Cycle tracks , Herald , August 6)whose pitiful lament tugged atmy conscience, I must make apoint in defence of people whouse Shanks Pony.

It has been evident for anumber of years to us poormaligned pedestrians, that to besafe from being mown down byan anti-social cyclist, we shouldnever walk on the pavement.

Shopping precincts all over thetown from the Stow to the towncentre, pavements, and even thetow path along the River Stort, suffer from a daily influx of people riding bikes to thedetriment of the rights of pedestrians.

This modern day blight on our

society from these ignoramuseswho think might is right withtheir attitude of Im comingthrough or else, should betackled by the police, and finesimplemented.

It is illegal to ride a cycle onthe footpath. You also need apermit to ride a bike along thetow path of the Stort, but doesthis stop our selfish cyclists frominvading our pedestrian

thoroughfares, does it heck! You have the temerity to steponto the cycle path, and Barrywrites to the Herald , yep thatcertainly sums up the mentalityof cyclists.

    Bryan Leach, Jerounds

No rulesSIR I can assure T A Oval thatmy letters of protest at MrRammells expense claims arenot politically biased as he/sheassumes. I have in fact cast myvotes for Mr Rammell in thepast, but never again.

I want a candidate who isuntainted, and yes I agree theTories have had their snouts inthe trough, possibly more thanNew Labour but this does notabsolve the fact that MrRa mm el l h as, a lon g wi thpossibly another 600 MPs,abused a system that had norules, hence the constant claimsthat rules were not broken.

When I worked, any perceivedperk from my employer wassubject to tax one law for MPsand another for the public.

Please, T A Oval, take yourpolitical blinkers off and look atall sides.
