Manufacturing Engineering:

Cab Engineering Design Reduces Mismatched and Nonconforming Parts A multinational rail manufacturer asked QuEST

to design a manufacturing process for a new engine

cab. QuEST developed multiple concepts based on

the system and component requirements and the

existing baseline engine cab. Working closely with

the manufacturer, we finalized the concept by

considering the structural design criteria, manu-

facturing constraints, serviceability, safety,

and environmental and thermal factors.

By simplifying the manufacturing design, we made

it easier for production personnel to assemble cabs

without multiple requests for additional information

from design engineers. We also streamlined material

handling of cab components by utilizing our poka-

yoke (mistake-proofing) principles. This reduced

mismatched and nonconforming parts and gave

the customer a standardized baseline for all new

engine cab orders.

Mechanical Design & Development:

Accelerating Design Release Time A large rail manufacturer based in

Europe turned to QuEST for the design

of interior subsystems including sidewall

paneling, luggage rack installations, bicycle

stowage, and roof electrical harnesses.

QuEST recommended adapting the

existing standard platform design, and

delivered solutions for concept design and

preliminary design.

Following design review approvals,

we finalized engineering data and then

released the design to manufacturing. Our

efforts and expertise improved the design

release time by 40 percent. A key factor

in our success was the use of documented

best practices. We also reduced the change

management cycle time and increased the

level of control over design configurations.
