What are the Four Stages?

The Four Stages of film are:

•Set-Up: This is where the setting and characters are introduced.

•Complicating Action: This is where the first conflicts are introduced to the story.

•Development: This is where the characters of the story struggle with the conflict and head toward the climax.

•Resolution: Climax to Falling Action.

The Four Stages of the Film

The first stage of the film ends after the characters are

introduced and Indiana Jones discovers the Location of the

Ark.

The second stage ends and the development stage begins when Indy and Marion fly to Egypt, because all of the characters and conflict have been

introduced, and now the main characters need to struggle with the

conflict.

The third stage ends and the Resolution begins when the Nazis attempt to activate the Ark and get killed, because all of the hype about the Ark leads up to this point.

What are Dangling Causes?

A dangling cause is a form of foreshadowing. It is a scene that shows characters making seemingly pointless remarks or actions that will actually matter later on in the story.

Dangling Causes in the

Film

In the beginning of the movie, we see a snake coil up around Indy on the plane. Indy then screams “I hate snakes!”. At first, the viewer really doesn’t care. But at the end of the film, the Ark Indy wants to get it is guarded by an army of snakes.

Dangling Causes in the Film (cont.)

Early on in the film, we see that Marion can take immense amounts of liquor in her system. The viewer first sees this scene as a pointless little fun scene, but later in the movie, Marion has to drink lots of liquor to get her German captor drunk so she can escape.

What is a Motif?

A motif is the constant repetition of emphasis on small, trivial things to create small themes for a text. This can be anything from specific lines to vibrant colors to actions taken by the characters.
