Nominations are now being accepted for the inaugural class of the Warren East HighSchool Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. This is a way to recognize outstandinggraduates from WEHS through their professional, civic, or humanitariancontributions and accomplishments.
Nominations will be accepted until 3:00 PM on April 8, 2013. Persons nominatedmust be a graduate of Warren East High School and have been graduated for at least10 years. After all nominations are in, the selection committee will choose fournominees to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. First Annual Heroes Dash
On April 20th, South Warren High School Student Council will host its first annual Heroes Dash at KereiakesPark. This year's race will support the Boys' and Girls' Club of Bowling Green. Kentucky Shakespeare Performances
Melanie Keeling, of the English Department, is offering students the chance to watchtwo performances by the Kentucky Shakespeare association. Classes in all freshmanand sophomore English classes are allowed to participate in the Julius Caesar
presentation. It will last 90-minutes, beginning at 1 p.m. on April 25th. The cost foradmission is $3.
Gabrielle Sachs and Kaleb Crowe, of the history department, are offering theirsophomore U.S. History students the chance to view Living History: We the People.The performance takes place at 9 a.m. on April 26th and lasts for one hour. The costfor admission is $3.

The track team competed at the Grayson County Allcomers meet yesterday. Both the boys andgirls team came in 3rd place. Leading the boys was LaTerrance Cracket and Aaron Wilson.Aaron Wilson won the 110 Hurdles, 300 hurdles and Long jump. LaTerrance Cracket won the100 and 200 and came in 2nd in the 400. The 4x200 team of Aaron Wilson, Ryan WhiteDejarnett, Caleb Casavechia, and LaTerrance Crackett came in 1st. The 4x200 team of MattAuffant, Marquis Jones, Wyatt Callison, and Antonio Allen came in 2nd. Aaron Osborne won themile. Ryan WhiteDeJarnett came in 2nd in the 200 and long jump. The Music Man
The cast of the musical put on a very impressive show on friday andsaturday, everyone's voices sounded wonderful and the choreography wasbeyond impressive , Thanks to Elijah Furlong and Mrs. Spurlock, The director thisyear was Mrs. Marshall this was her first time directing the Warren East Musicaland she set up a wonderful performance with many more sure to follow in theupcoming years.
Teacher SpotlightThis weeks teacher spotlight is Sheri Marshall, the newest edition of the Warren Eastfamily who is the choir teacher and is in charge of school musicals and talent shows. Withher free time she enjoys hanging out with her siblings, husband, and the girls from herchurch. Her advice to others is “As long as you’re willing to work there is nothing you can’tdo.”

is an incredibly gifted artist. During his spare time he enjoys
running, playing baseball and hanging out with friends. Hispassion in life is drawing and after high school he hopes to go tocollege for graphic design.

WEHS AnglersThe Bass Fishing Team fished in two tournaments this weekend. Austin Moore and Zack Sowders placed 4th in
the Muhlenberg Co. Open on Saturday.
On Sunday, they participated in the Warren East Invitational at Barren River. Austin Moore and Zack Sowders
placed 3rd overall, Dillon Rager and Austin Duvall placed 6th while Khyree Boards and Clay Murphy finished 7th.
Zack Sowders won second place big fish with 2 pounds, 8 ounces.
CPR
Surviving a Nuclear Blast1.) Keep an eye on the news.2.) Assess your risk and consider evacuation if a nuclear exchange is looking likely.3.) Learn about the different types of nuclear weapons4.) Guard critical electrical equipment against EMP. At the very least unplug yourdevices.5.) Seek shelter immediately.6.) Remember that radiation exposure could cause large numbers of deaths.7.) Know the types of radiation particles. The three types of radiation are Alpha, Beta,and Gamma rays, gamma rays being the deadliest.8.) Begin reinforcing your shelter from the inside by stacking dirt around the walls oranything else you can find.9.) Plan on staying in your shelter for a minimum of 200 hours (89 days). NEVER leavethe shelter in the first 48hours.10.) Ration your supplies.11.) Wear all clothing (hats, gloves, goggles, closed sleeve shirt, etc.)12.) Treat radiation and thermal burns.13.) Feel free to assist people with radiation sickness, also called Radiation Syndrome.14.) Most likely, a nuclear attack will not be a singular event.15.) Be prepared for another blast.
Reel Generation FestivalThis is open to all high school students and is a fantastic way for students to get interested in making
short films and short documentaries to showcase their talents and to submit their work for judging. It
is the only film festival that provides these film opportunities to any high school student in the
Commonwealth of Kentucky. In addition, the Reel Generation Film Festival has been endorsed by the
Kentucky Film Office, which is “responsible for marketing the state of Kentucky to the film, television
and advertising industries”.
The top students win monetary prizes with the winner receiving $500. Other awards are also offered.
Last year, there were students from Lexington, Louisville, and Owensboro that competed along with
those from Barren County and Glasgow. There are many different categories to enter. The deadline
to submit entries is April 15th. The actual “festival” will be held Saturday, April 27th at the Plaza
Theatre in Glasgow and will be open to the public for viewing.
We need Warren County represented this year!

All juniors will take the ACT free of charge at Warren East High School on March 5, 2013.∙ FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student AidThe FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Anyone who wants financial aid for college will need to fill out the FAFSA. The application is used to determine the dollar amount you or your family will
be expected to contribute towards college. All federal grant and loan awards are determined by the FAFSA, and nearly all colleges use the FAFSA as the basis for their own financial aid awards (scholarships).

This year, Bluegrass Cellular will award 18 onetime scholarships valued at $1,500 each toselect graduating seniors who attend high school in our 40county coverage area. WHAT IS PBIS?
PBIS Positive Behavior Intervention and Support is a positive, proactive approach to teachingstudents the behaviors that are expected of themthroughout the building. Our school wide expectations are posted throughout the school and inside each classroom. Based on research, it hasproven to be more successful than traditional methodsof waiting for inappropriate behavior to occur, and thenpunishing children for those undesirable actions.PBIS operates on the assumption that many studentsmay not know exactly what behaviors are expectedin a given situation. Expectations for the cafeteria,hallways, restrooms, voice level, dress, and bustransportation are taught the first day of school, and retaughtthroughout the year. Research has shown a dramatic increase of instructional time due to the decrease ofinappropriate behavior, meaning that faculty and staff are spending less time dealing with behavior problemsand more time teaching.

PBIS – WHAT IS IT?
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a school wide, proactive approach to
discipline. Our school-wide expectations are posted throughout the school and inside each
classroom. The faculty and staff teach these expectations and positively reinforce appropriate
student behavior. Research has shown a dramatic increase of instructional time due to the
decrease of inappropriate behavior, meaning that faculty and staff is spending less time dealing
with behavior problems and more time teaching.
GOLDEN TICKETS
Members of the faculty and staff are provided with tickets to be awarded to any student
demonstrating WEHS PRIDE. The faculty and staff are responsible for encouraging positive
behavior and informing students of their success. Once a student is recognized for their PRIDE
with a golden ticket, the student may submit the ticket into a weekly drawing for prizes such as
t-shirts, athletic passes, homework passes, and gift certificates. Drawings are typically held
every Friday afternoon. Students must submit their tickets to the Youth Service Center (YSC)
before the drawing.
DOES IT WORK?
YES! In 2006-07 we had 1856 discipline referrals. We begin implementing PBIS in 2007. Our
discipline referrals have decreased every year. For 2011-12 we had 834 total referrals.
