DESIGN is the power to manipulate materials and the environment to create functional & aesthetically pleasing spaces, despite constraints.

Heavy, high-heat-capacity material that can absorb and store a signifi cant amount of heat.
MatmataLow annual rainfall (100-250 mm)Unevenly distributed by time and space.Area is very aridTemperatures frequently exceed 40 degrees C during summertime
INSPIRATION
The Earth has the capability to stabilize a consistent temperature for the whole year The phenomenon of thermal mass is that the deeper into the earth you go, the more consistent the temperature remains year-round. Most fl uctuations in temperatures occur closer to the surface of the earth.
MatmataMatmata
![Page 9: RAHELA TITEAN_PORTFOLIO](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020323/568c4ad91a28ab491699dc45/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Earth sheltering was used to protect inhabitants from extreme daytime heat and cold nights. The earth uses thermal mass to stabilize tem-peratures year-round. By building underground, ground level can be used for other purposes such as agriculture. There will not be loss of heat from infi ltration. The resource is unlimited and sustainable to the earth. Energy savings are equivalent to 75%.

Using the underground dwellings from Matmata and some other structures from the present, I draw my inspiration for a residential space that is focused on using the earth as a thermal insulator to avoid using a heating and cooling system. From the homes in Matmata, I borrowed the idea of a central courtyard that would produce the majority of the light in the space. The rooms are arrayed around this courtyard that produces light but also acts as a focal point. The Berber people produced this concept that effectively distributes light in all directions and makes underground living possible. I looked to the modern applications for inspiration on ventilation and bringing in even more light into the space. After observing the three structures, I created light wells that bring in more light to individual rooms. I also used the concept of different ground levels towards my advantage and created the light wells through that. Ventilation is an important aspect of underground construction since underground dwellings can often lack fresh air. All the windows will be operable at the client’s convenience. I also used a system of slitted walls to allow air fl ow from room to room.

DIAGRAMS
These diagrams illustrate how sunlight and ventilation travel throughout the space. The “central courtyard” allows for sunlight to be distributed throughout the rooms that are arrayed around it. Various levels make it possible to have additional windows to bring in light. Although the space is underground, it is thoroughly ventilated through the window systems and slotted walls. Air can be distributed evenly and eff ectively this way.

In the design phase for the Luxe Hotel, I came up with a basic concept for the layout of the reception space. However, it was only during the process of creating construction documents that I fully developed my design concept. I was forced to evaluate my lighting plan and how it related to the various systems needed to run the space. By recreating my refl ected ceiling plan, I was not only able to accommodate mechanical systems, but also to enhance thedesign concept.
