It was no usual day at school for 17 students (pictured above)from the Raglan area last Wednesday. Pupils from Raglan Area, Te Mata, Waitetuna and Te Uku schools visited the Raglan Club to write essays in exam like conditions. Their essays are entries for the annual ANZAC essay Competition held by the Raglan Club every year and the winners receive funds to go towards their secondary schooling.

This year the topic was 'The Gallipoli Campaign' and the students

were given one and a half hours to complete their essay. Kathy Briant, teacher from Te Mata School bought her whole senior class of year 6, 7 and 8s. "It's great exam experience for later on," says Kathy. The teachers involved also see it as an opportunity for their students to learn about the relevant history related to the topic each year. The Raglan Club provides a generous BBQ lunch at the completion of the essay writing with a chance for the schools to mix and mingle.

The winner of this years competition is Lennox Reynolds, year 8 (see essay published on page 8.) Second place went to Charlie Irvin (yr 8) and third to Sven Seddon (yr 8).

Apublic meeting has been called for next Thursday evening (May 1) in an

effort to sort out the roading issues hindering progress with the Raglan town square project.

Dave Currie, who is Raglan Chamber of Commerce president, preferred to describe the meeting as a “place making meeting around road issues” and said it represented the first step in a process which had now been developed to ensure some healthy community discussion on the project.

Thursday’s meeting – which is under Waikato District Council’s auspices – would be led by a consultant roading engineer “to give some additional independence” to the process. “Council can’t be seen to be self-interested, so they got someone else to look at it [the issue] as well,” he said. “This should give people more confidence in the plan.”

The engineer would give his

views and the public theirs in a bid to find consensus on the roading requirements.

The surprise development follows a mid-April planning meeting where people split into six groups looking at platforms, seating, planter boxes, roadway painting, fundraising and aesthetics coordination.

But it became difficult to make much headway in planning the makeover because the space left for the town square project once roading needs were allowed for was still not known.

“This is pivotal – until we know what’s available we can’t see what’s possible,” Dave told the Chronicle.

One thing which was clear, however, was that the joining of the two centre islands at the Bow Street/Wainui Road T-junction was not going to happen. “It was only ever brainstorming, it was only ever an idea,” he said.

But what did need to be worked out, for instance, was how much of the

road width set aside for vehicles coming down Bow St and turning left into Wainui Road could be utilised as part of a town square.

Dave said once it was known how much or how little road was available, the town square group would develop some firm plans and have a drawing commissioned.

Next a big board showing the plans would be set up downtown – maybe on one of the centre islands – and the group would commit to manning it over two or three weekends so locals could “look and chat and have general discussion around it all”.

“Until now we’ve had a schematic plan only; the big board will show something concrete.”

Finally there would be another public meeting to see what everyone thought. “That’s the process, which up until now has been missing.”

Dave stressed the chamber role’s in the matter was simply to ensure some good robust community debate. “After all, it’s a democracy,” he said.

The town square concept, which has always been intended only as a 12-month trial, developed out of a day-long community workshop with Australian “place making” guru David Engwicht back in February. Edith Symes

The Raglan community is rallying around a very

important fundraiser to support the legal challenge to stop the government strip mining our seabed.

The current challenge is to halt an application for consent to mine the ironsand on our seabed floor. This application is currently before the Decision Making Committee of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to opencast/strip-mine the sand off our West Coast seabed – an area the size of Rarotonga.

KASM – Kiwis against seabed mining - are raising funds to pay for the legal representation and expert witnesses in support of the arguments against this potentially environmental disaster.

To this end, a fabulous music/auction event is being held at the Raglan Club on Saturday 3rd May. Top musicians include Raglan local Midge Marsden and the Legendary Raglan Mudsharks; Moana and the Tribe; Slipped Discs and Amelia Penfold. These generous, internationally

acclaimed and high profile musicians are all donating their time to support this crucial cause.

Auction items range from the funky and adventurous through to the luxurious. Offers are coming in thick and fast from generous Raglan people and include an overnight cruise on the Wahine Moe; a horse trek for two from Bridal Veil falls; surprises from Aaron Brunet (Masterchef) and Josh Kronfeld (ex All Black) plus much more: art, massage, bike rides … even a tattoo!

Doors open 6.30pm at the Raglan Club and great food (that is part of the fundraising effort) will be available from this time. Music kick’s off at 7.00pm and intrepid auctioneer Julie Hannah from Ray White, will be auctioning various goods and services throughout the evening.

Raglan mum steps up again totake on Sky Tower challenge

Johnny George never really expected he’d have to make

good on his offer to have his hair shaved off at a Te Mata School PTA bazaar. He thought that maybe if pledges got to $500 he’d also put in $500 of his own, and that would be that without him having to face his first haircut in more than three years.

But when he came to collect up the money that people gave for his head shave he was “gobsmacked” to find it came to $1300 – and that left the Johnny, a teacher aide at the school,

with no option but to follow through on his promise.

“Even my wife gave $200,” he complained lightheartedly. “Now I am sitting here [at home in Raglan] with a bald head, a head cold and a blocked nose.”

The bazaar was a fundraiser to buy new school computers, and Johnny still had the strength this week to say a big thank you to everyone at Te Mata School, members of the Raglan District Union Church, his “wonderful” neighbours and family and friends for their generosity.

Raglan mother of two and volunteer firefighter Leanna Darby reckons

it’s “a bit of madness” mixed with a competitive spirit that motivates her every Monday and Friday to complete an early-morning run up and down the 260-odd steps of the Bridal Veil Falls – four, sometimes five, times over.

And that kitted out in gear which includes carrying on her back the hefty steel breathing apparatus sets filled with air, so familiar to firefighters the world over.

No new carbon fibre ones for the Raglan crew as yet, she rues, to lighten the load.

Leanna’s both training and “madly fundraising”, along with three fireman colleagues from Raglan’s volunteer brigade, in preparation for Auckland’s 10th

annual Firefighter Sky Tower Step Challenge, which is now less than a month away.

The small team’s been training three months already, and for Leanna that means getting up at 4.50am to feed her six-month-old before tackling the falls just beyond Te Mata between 5.30 and 7.30 both weekdays.

But she’s unfazed. It’s a great opportunity to re-claim her pre-baby fitness, she explains. “I enjoy a challenge.”

And it’s a really fun event for kids to see, Leanna adds. She and hubby Dan Mills – also a local firefighter – have a three-year-old as well as a baby and “they can wait at the top and watch us come through”.

Leanna took on the Firefighter Challenge for the first time a couple of years ago, while for Raglan’s Stephen O’Byrne and John Oetzel it’s also second time round after completing the 2013

event in which 550 firefighters from New Zealand and overseas raced up the 1103 steps or 51 flights.

All contenders battled their way to the top of the iconic Sky Tower in full firefighter gear weighing up to 25 kilos, raising more than $480,000 for Leukemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

This year’s event will be a first for local tradie Brett Soanes who confessed he didn’t know much about it but, like his fellow firefighters, was happy to put time into training and energy into fundraising for a good cause which supports thousands of patients and their families living with blood-related conditions.

The 2014 event happens on Saturday May 17 with 700 firefighters taking on the challenge. People can donate online with direct links to the names of competitors. E Symes

Landcare networking field dayLandcare and other community groups working to protect Waikato’s environment are holding a Landcare Networking Field Day in Raglan next month.

The event is being organized by Waikato Regional Council in conjunction with Whaingaroa Harbour Care.

“The primary objective of this field day is to enable representatives

from each landcare group and other community groups to discuss current issues affecting their areas and to develop an understanding of each others’ work,” said council sustainable agriculture coordinator Bala Tikkisetty.

The event will be at the Sunset Motel conference hall at 7 Bankart St on Tuesday 6 May, running from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Lunch will be provided.

The afternoon will include visits

to plantings and stream monitoring sites, and a fish monitoring demonstration.

A minibus for those wanting transport will leave Waikato Regional Council in Hamilton at 8.30am.

Curtain falls on Tony’s T-House

Raglan identity Tony Johnson reckons he may

have to go back to living a boring life for a while now that his Government Road house – described on Facebook as the “T-House … home of yumminess, friendship and cultural experiences” – is being sold.

“It’s kind of sad,” Tony told the Chronicle last week as he prepared to pack up and move out now the owners of the house plan to do it up and put it on the market. He described it as an “awesome spot … around the corner from the wharf in Cox’s Bay”.

Jamaican-born Tony, a band manager, grew up in London but settled later in Auckland where he had a lounge bar and venue called Galatos on K Road. He found his way to Raglan about nine years ago, and soon after his T-House evolved.

The T stands for “time out” or “transcend everything”, Tony explains. Essentially he’s run an open house – a fun hangout for

locals, performers and travellers. Tony’s held everything from family-oriented weekly movie nights and Saturday social gatherings there to kids’ parties and Sunday roasts for 40-odd people.

It’s been about things that transcend normal everyday life, says Tony who describes himself as “just an ordinary fella”.

Tony’s also known around town for the Raglan Artisan Workshop or RAW he set up down at the wharf as shops were re-establishing after the disastrous fire there.

Although RAW worked quite well for a time, says Tony, some “noise issues” forced the market-style business out, and a similar collective space called Three Little Birds was established downtown alongside Raglan’s sushi bar last October.

Tony reckons he’s off now to have a bit of a holiday, but will be back to do the T-House thing again if he can find a place with a decent-sized house and land. “It works quite well for the community.”

Raglan Club Anzac Open DayRaglan Club Inc will be opening its doors to the community on Anzac Day following the service on Bow Street at 11am.All are very welcome to mix and mingle as we remember the soldiers who went into battle on our behalf.

Live music will follow into the afternoon - and the winning student for the annual Raglan Club sponsored Anzac essay writing competition for the district’s Year 8 students will be awarded their prize around 1pm.

Good luck to the 14 personnel from 161 Battery who no doubt will want to put the leger right from last year darts and pool.

The call’s gone out -- on the eve of Anzac Day -- for memorabilia which can be incorporated into a World War I commemoration exhibition next year which organisers say will be all about “the Raglan soldiers who left our shores, many of whom did not return”.

“We want to focus on their stories, where they served, and the stories of the community of Raglan affected by their absence,” says Raglan Museum Society committee member Ken Soanes of the exhibition, which will open here next February.

And as part of that the society’s seeking from the public “items from the war years, photos, soldiers’ photos, diaries and postcards, soldiers’ souvenirs – anything that can be used to illustrate the war years”.

Ken believes, the sorts of items they’re after are probably sitting in dusty old boxes and bottom drawers.

“Every item has a story and that is what we are wanting to record,” he says. “We are planning a short

audio visual display and are seeking stories about the war years that have been passed down from parents and grandparents.

“We see these as important as with time the stories are lost … this is an opportunity to have them recorded for the future, and preferably told by a family member.”

Raglan RSA president Colin Hodkinson says his association is “absolutely happy” to collaborate in any way it can with the museum over the exhibition.

“Memorabilia is great, memorabilia with stories is fabulous,” he says. “The whole idea is to tell the story of the Raglan people [during the war years].”

Meanwhile the museum society points out its new building, adjacent to Joyce Petchell Park in Wainui Road, is very secure and both temperature and humidity-controlled.

“We’re now confidently exhibiting items of considerable value and antiquity,” Ken says. He emphasises processes are in place to record every item that comes into the

museum, that items are catalogued and photographed with details kept on a secure electronic database, and that anything not on display is kept in secure storage.

“People can be assured that their memorabilia will be handled with special care and can be brought along as a loan item, although we prefer items to be presented to the museum as gifts for the permanent exhibition which will follow after the commemoration.”

While 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, the commemoration exhibition’s opening next February will coincide with the anniversary of the first engagement of New Zealand troops at the Suez Canal, where they helped repel a Turkish attack. The Anzac Gallipoli engagement followed on April 25 of that same year.

Celebration of longtime army, Raglan linkage still a way off

When and how the 50th anniversary of Raglan’s “adoption” of the army’s 161 Battery will be celebrated should be clearer after a meeting that was to have been held today between the Raglan RSA and top brass here for tomorrow’s Anzac Day service.

Back last December the Raglan Chronicle reported the battery was planning an extended Anzac Day visit this month so a series of community-based activities could be held to mark the unusual link between a Manawatu-based artillery unit and a Waikato seaside town.

But Anzac Day’s tomorrow and the 50th anniversary celebrations are still very much on the drawing board.

“We are going to plan it out in detail with [Raglan RSA president] Colin Hodkinson the day before Anzac Day,” Sergeant Major Richard Pheoeore of 161 Battery told the Chronicle last week. He said that at this stage “it’s just ideas in our heads, our intentions”.

Sergeant Major Pheoeore said they

were looking at records to try to ascertain exactly when the 50th anniversary should be held. “We’re coming to do some mingling but it could be later this year or next year,” he said.

An open day at Raglan Area School, a rugby match against a local “selection” and even a military exercise in rural areas around Raglan were among ideas mentioned by RSA representatives when they approached the community board last December for some funding to help cover costs.

Raglan’s “adoption” of 161 Battery goes back to the mid-1960s when the unit was deployed to Vietnam amid political controversy and huge public opposition.

The soldiers and their families took so much abuse, from acquaintances as well as strangers, that when rotations returned after 12-month tours of duty it was common for a plane to land at a military airbase in the dead of night with no civic reception.

On one occasion, 161 battery troops were spat on and had blood thrown at them as they marched down Auckland’s Queen Street. Tensions became so high

that soldiers were told to not wear their uniforms in public.

Through it all, the Raglan community supported the battery and their families. Encouraged by Doug Arter – who was described at the time as one of Raglan’s leading lights – they sent letters, food parcels, books, New Zealand beer and “other small comforts” to every member of the battery on active service in Vietnam.

At one point during the Vietnam War, 161 Battery managed to smuggle Mr Arter aboard an aircraft and there is reportedly a photo showing him and a Lieutenant Hugh Weatherhead “brewing up” at a base in South Vietnam.

In 1972, the battery formally adopted part of Lord Raglan’s coat of arms as its battery emblem. The relationship endures today and members of the battery parade travel through religiously from Linton army camp – often with a field gun in tow – to take part in Raglan’s Anzac Day services.

One recent notable absence, though, was in 2011 when Anzac Day fell on Easter Monday and troops had been given home leave. A. T

I spent my days high upon the hilltops goat herding with my brother Doruk, traipsing through the bumps and ruts throughout the landscape. The frustration in my life came from my brother, the most irritating and irresponsible person on the planet yet he was the only individual I could relate to. I remember one night huddled around an open fire. I had somehow managed to make him so angry he was in a blind rage. Shockingly he stood up pulled out his gun and fired. I searched my body to see if I had been hit and out of the corner of my eye I saw a grey wolf drenched in blood – shot on the verge of attack. Though my brother may have had a terrible temper, he was always there when I needed him. That was until the day I needed him most.

After six weeks of basic training I was posted to Gallipoli. Rows upon rows of men had already dug great trenches within the earth 7 feet high and 6 feet wide. We were placed high upon the mountain overlooking the beach down below. It was only 3 days after my arrival that things started to jump into action. Great ships sailed into the harbour, firing shells into the face of the mountain. The noise was deafening. Explosions propelled shrapnel and debris in every direction. Hundreds of men streamed in either dead or wounded. The screams of the injured resonated through the trenches leaving behind a feeling too sickening to be described.

As the ships sailed closer towards the shore small wooden boats were dispatched carrying ten or more men within each. As soon as they arrived it was a blood bath. Hundreds upon hundreds of men armed with nothing but rifles were sent running into a hail of machine gun fire and shells. It disgusted me that the way war was fought was to send thousands of ordinary men running at a bombardment of gunfire. To me it was senseless loss of life and although they were the enemy I could not help but feel sorry for them.

Life was hard in the trenches for the next few weeks. We fought wave after wave of futile assaults. Food had become

scarce and the stench of rotting carcasses was overpowering. After five dreadful months we heard that our commanding officers were planning a counter attack. At 6am the plan was to take place. The attack involved emerging from the safety of our own trench and running across open ground in an attempt to capture theirs and sure enough as soon as the day dawned the attack began. Fortunately I was not in the first wave. The second wave climbed from the trench. The sinister sound of machine gun fire echoed all around. I was never a religious person before the war but in battle the fear of death made me cling to the thought that some force would protect me. The time had come for us to run. The whistle sounded signaling it was time. I climbed over the parapet, Allah help me. I took a deep breath and ran. Dead men carpeted the open the ground and the ones that still clung to life screamed anguished cries as I ran for the front line. I made it to the enemy trench, clambered down the sand bags to the heart of it all. I found myself face to face with a British soldier. I looked him in the eye. Could I really kill someone’s son? I didn’t want to kill him but it was him or me. I pulled the trigger and then my heart sank as my gun failed to fire. This was it I thought, the end of it all. I could see his finger inching towards the trigger. A loud bang reverberated through the air. I searched my body to see where I had been hit and out of the corner of my eye I saw the bloodstained British soldier slumped

down in front of me. Though my brother may have always

had a terrible temper he was always there when I needed him.

“To those hero’s that shed their blood and lost their lives you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side in this country of ours. You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe your tears your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Regan is one of the countries most respected musicians, and has shared the stage with all of the countries top Roots Reggae artists.

Saturday has local DJ collective M.O.A (Music For All) launch their new party brand West Coast Party . Kicking it off the M. O A have rapidly rising producers / djs T1R and DiFsounD making the trip out west to drop some big bass heavy beats with support from M.O.A resident Korruptive . This will be a huge night for Bass Culture in Raglan.

Sunday has some live reggae to kick your early evenings into action. Hamilton 7 piece band Rootz Konekt will be playing from 6 pm. With a 4 hour plus set of covers and originals encompassing reggae, roots and soul, these guys will finish off a fantastic weekend of music at the Yot Club.

There with him, as was the case most days, faithful four-legged best mate Timo (pictured left with Leon) seemed oblivious to the significance of the day, choosing to sleep most of it away in the portable dog-box.

How good do you have to be? Last Saturday the humidity/temperature changed during the day and Tony Ell decided his fish needed that extra bit of time in the fish smoker.

Well the 'Smokem Raglan' judges on Saturday night agreed. Tony Ell took out the top smoked fish prize, with a snapper he caught up the Coromandel with the Raglan Club Fishing Section - caught during the last three minutes of that competition.

Tony has smoked fish for a long time, for himself and friends. Wife Judy raves about how good the smoked fish is. Well Judy you are so right, Tony is the 2014 champion.

Entries were lower than last year due to the rough weather and no boats fishing over the Easter break, but the overall caliber of entries was much higher than last year. We had gemfish, lemonfish, eel, snapper, kahawai, trevally and kingfish and all types of herbs, chilli, lime and sweeteners from brown sugar to maple syrup plus other secret never to be revealed concoctions.

During the judging we had a flounder filleting demo. People were then invited to attempt to fillet a flounder for judging and the best flounder filleter on the evening was a local John Johenson. Surplus flounder fillets were then smoked on the spot.

Julie Hanna’s iconic cake was a octopus on a rock and the auction raised $75.00 for

the upcoming Hookem – Take a Kid Fishing. Thank you, Julie.

The judges, Julie Hanna, Clint Baddeley, Colin Chung and Ralph Blanchard gave up their Easter Sunday evening. They loved the role they played and hopefully will be available for 2015. They had fresh ideas for next years event along with the Committee, so there could be slight changes for 2015, but the basis of the competition will remain the same.

WHAKAIRO RAKAU CLASSES (MAORI WOODCARVING CLASSES)

Raglan Area School Night Classes with a kaiwhakairo, Kawharu Greensil, and supported by other experienced

carvers.

We propose two (10 night) courses for Thursday evenings beginning at 7pm for Term 2 and Term 3. Each 10-week block will cost $100 payable in advance for tutor costs.

Places may be booked in advance for both terms. There is also a small fee for attendance for a koha to the school for the facility. Chisels will be available for students though

we recommend that participants consider purchasing their own. (Please seek expert advice before purchasing

chisels.) Timber is a separate cost to participants.
